SureStay by Best Western Chambers Petrified Forest

The room itself made me say wow when we got there. It not only looked good, but smelled good also, we even had a pet friendly unit! Not only did the fridge work, but the freezer portion worked as well, which worked out well since the next town/restaurant is 40 min away. The shower pressure was really nice after hours in the car, a little massage. The bed had plenty of pillows and was surprisingly comfortable. This room also had a thermostat on the wall for localized air instead of a wall unit like most traditional hotels.
Holiday Inn Canyon de Chelly (Chinle)

The hotel: tattered yellow curtains, ancient bath tub in many shades of yellow and uncleaned ring around the tub, yellow tap water, bathroom sink faucet broken… The carpets and some furniture have been replaced in recent history but the property is in need of a deep refresh. The hotel restaurant had signs saying it was closed for the day except for opening hours of 6pm to 8pm. We went at 6pm to be told that they weren’t going to bother to open, despite it being a busy Saturday evening with few other options. I suggested they change the 6pm - 8pm signs and the receptionist gave me a snide “thank you”. The hotel pool was as dry as the non-existent bar. Upon entering the town the most prominent things I saw were the expansive youth detention center and the brand new shiny Denny’s. The other sit down restaurant in town at the Best Western was also inexplicably closed on Saturday evening, leaving a shabby looking Church’s Chicken, a fake Starbucks, and Burger King as remaining food options. We instead went to the grocery store where we scavenged from largely empty shelves. I have never been anywhere in the world in more apparent need of tourist dollars and so completely disinterested in taking them. I regret stopping here and should have kept driving.
