Candlewood Suites Sumter

I checked into the Candlewood Suites in Sumter SC on 7/19. The room looked great, and I even got an upgrade for my room type. I had to call to the front desk to get pillows, blankets and sheets for the sleeper sofa as there was none in the room for my granddaughters. When I finally got to go to bed, I pulled back the blankets on the bed in the bedroom and there was blood stains on the sheet. We all slept on the sleeper sofa for the night. I called the front desk first thing Saturday morning and informed the front desk with what I had found the night before. They told me they would send housekeeping up when they came in to take care of the situation. Housekeeping arrived and the lady said she was the Supervisor and cleaned the room herself the day before. She claimed she would have never put sheets on looking like that. I informed her of the trash I found in the trashcan under the kitchen sink as well, and it wasn't my trash. She and another cleaner cleaned the bed right away. Meanwhile, the GM Kaitlynn called me in the room and asked what was the problem. I filled her in, and the first thing out of her mouth was we won't be compensating anything on the room. Mind you, I am a Gold Elite member, and I hadn't even asked for compensation. All I wanted was clean sheets on the bed. But, the tone the GM used with me was unacceptable. I will finish out my stay until Friday at the hotel, due to having little ones with me, but next time I am in Sumter SC, I will be staying at another hotel. Like I said, all I was asking for was clean sheets and the GM made it seem that I was looking for a free room.

The motel covers all of the basic needs, but no microwave and walls are thin with little sound insulation. The room was clean and the bathroom had the necessary cleaning supplies. Friday check in desk staff was very friendly and helpful. Check out staff on Sunday morning not so much. Breakfast was sufficient though if you go at 9:30 am on Sunday and the grits is out they will not restock the pot though breakfast is open till 10:00 am.

I was thanked for being an IHG member by a personable host. She asked if first floor was okay and I replied as long as it was away from the highway and quiet. She gave us room 324 instead. The room had two refrigerators, the usual small, but also a larger one, such as for a one-room apartment. Internet speed test to be 9.4 Mbps up and down. There were no USB ports in the lamps or anywhere else. Traffic on the road was heavy and loud. The noise came through the window, which did not seem to be double-glazed for noise reduction. Though after about 10:00 p.m. the traffic subsided, it resumed with a vengeance around 4:00 a.m. An extra blanket already was in the room as requested in our reservation. The bathroom had poor shower water strength, but the temperature of it was good. The bathroom also was poorly lit. The toilet seemed lower than the low toilets at other hotels. We did not see any handicapped parking spaces near the main entrance, though I did get a decent spot just by chance. When we left the following morning, I still did not see any. Perhaps they were at the far end of the building. Breakfast was rather good, there were two types of omelets (cheese and a ”yuppie” vegetable), both chicken and pork sausage, and strong coffee, the best of our whole trip. There was a TV in the breakfast room and it was turned up way too loud to be able to carry on a conversation with my wife.
