Yes, the salon of La Licorne looks a bit overdone, and the statuary around its shimmering swimming pool carries a whiff of the mass market. But these are also part of the character that gives this enclave of tranquillity in the bustling Deux Plateaux district of Abidjan its distinctive charm. I loved my stay here, and unreservedly commend it to anyone looking for a mid-range hotel of character. My room had excellent Wi-Fi, a shower of quite recent vintage with hot water on demand, a very comfortable bed, working door locks, and a window on the poolside tables and lounge chairs. The reception staff, mostly Ivorian but with an occasional young Frenchman with admirable English facility manning the morning desk, was friendly and welcoming. Breakfast each morning is ample, and my one dinner in situ was very good. Of course, location matters, and whatever may be the things a visitor comes to Abidjan to “see” or “do,” they probably aren’t in Deux Plateaux. But the neighborhood is well stocked with restaurants and other facilities close at hand, and for me it was quite convenient to my needs.
