Maria is a sweetheart and ensured my stay was wonderful. The infinity salt water pool is a joy to swim in, grounds are lovely, property is classy and interior design exquisite. Prob the most luxurious place to stay on Terceira, yet the price is most reasonable. I suggest booking directly with Maria at geral at quintadamerces dot com. For those of us non native Portuguese speakers, Maria will happily converse with you in English. She and her late husband (2016) lovingly restored what was essentially a ruin 18 years ago. Asked to see the before and after photos. Her collection of beautiful objects from her extensive world travels is a delight. Check out her collection of teapots. If you enjoy staying at a place with style and history, Maria’s home is your address.

Absolutely beautiful and elegant, this XVIth century seaside quinta is located in Sao Mateo, just a few minutes’ drive from downtown Angra do Heroismo and Monte Brasil and close to Sao Mateo's excellent harborfront restaurants. Woods and gardens surround the quinta--lots to explore. A typical Terceira craggy, volcanic beach lies below the quinta. Everything about this place exudes character--it's a truly class act. Its long-time owner, Maria, has lovingly restored the estate and serves as perfect host to its guests. As a couple of the most recent TripAdvisor commentators put it, this isn't a Marriott. This place is for discerning travelers who will appreciate the quinta's amazing history, architecture, and old world charm. But, it comes with modern amenities as well, including a lovely infinity pool that overlooks the ocean and updated bathrooms. Breakfasts are sumptuous. On-site parking is plentiful. Our suite was roomy and beautifully decorated. History comes alive in the common living areas, yet they are so comfortable. Maria and her small staff couldn't have been more pleasant and helpful during our five-night stay. Their restaurant and touring suggestions were spot on. There is simply no better place to stay on Terceira ... we'd go back to Quinta das Merces in a heartbeat!
