We loved the Uga Ulagalla. The rooms are large cabins, elevated on stilts, with outside decks and a private plunge pool. We had room 1 which was possibly the best! Near the main hotel complex so an easy walk to dinner, the room, the deck overlooked the paddy fields which were alive with wildlife. In the evening, sitting in the private plunge pool with a beer from the minibar whilst the swifts circled overhead was magical. The room was really lovely, though the mosquito net was suitable for decoration only (this was the only fault we could see with the room and mosquitoes were not a major problem). The main restaurant was a little limited and although the food was great we would have been struggling a bit with choices had we been staying much longer. They do have a traditional restaurant which is in the middle of the paddy fields where you can eat a selection of fabulous curries cooked over a wood fire. It is very expensive and the volume of food is far more than a normal person could possibly eat but the ambience is fabulous, the food delicious (though not very spicy) and the service very personal indeed. You do have to be very aware at breakfast as the restaurant is open and there are some very wily macaque monkeys who will steal your breakfast if you are not alert. They love the sugar in bowls and we saw one steal from the neighbouring table. Despite being very much on guard it didn't stop one doing a smash and grab raid on by breakfast toast. He then sat on the nearby roof eating my toast. There are a range of activities to do including guided walks, birdwatching (it is sensational for those who like birds), horse riding, kayaking to name but a few. Could have spent longer and not got bored.
