Loved staying at Montacute Boutique Bunkhouse. The owner is a super nice and upbeat guy and even carried my heavy suitcase up the small staircase! The shared bathrooms are well-maintained and clean and towels as well as extra blankets were provided. I would stay here again any time!

Beautiful house, bedroom and great balcony view. Friendly and helpful staff, clean house. I didn't like the bunk beds in my bedroom. Nice neighborhood near Salamanca market. House full of young guests. It was kind of noisy, but they quick went to bed and was quiet. Wifi doesn't work well, too many guests. I gound my bed too soft. But I would stay again.

What a super little hostel! Excellent location just minutes from the waterfront. Lovely man in reception - they always give a tour of facilities. Hostel is set in an old Victorian house which is delightful. Large well- equipped kitchen, free food available from previous guests. A lovely garden although it had yappy dogs in it so I wasn’t a fan. Beautiful upstairs verandah with comfortable seating, and sofas in other spaces to no shortage of places to relax. I was in a female four bed dorm which was a bit tight for space but I saw other rooms which seemed more spacious with wider beds. I loved the individual lights and fans for each bed. My bottom bunk had a curtain but I wouldn’t have like being in a top bunk as they didn’t, so you were exposed to the main light going o etc. The only thing that spoiled my stay was the same thing that spoils every stay I’ve had when travelling - thoughtless guests who make noise early in the morning/late at night. The three girls sharing my room got up at various times from 5.30 onwards so needless to say my morning did not start well! Hostel management can’t do much about that though. Immaculately clean bathrooms and a good vibe. I’d definitely stay here again, but in a private room!

Stayed here for 2 nights. The bunk house is conveniently located at battery point and a walking distance from Salamanca place. Although the bathroom are shared, there are quite a few bathroom available to use.

The location of the hotel is very good. The environment and view are very good. There are many cafes and restaurants nearby. The rooms are comfortable, including double rooms and bunk beds. The boss is friendly and talkative.

I regret to inform fellow travelers that our recent stay at Montacute Bunkhouse in Hobart was deeply troubling. Not only did we encounter a severe bed bug infestation, making our nights unbearable, but the response from the owner was shockingly inappropriate and disrespectful. During our attempt to address the issue, the owner was not only unhelpful but also made several sexist remarks towards my girlfriend, which were completely unacceptable and offensive. This kind of behavior, coupled with the lack of basic hygiene standards, makes it impossible for us to recommend this establishment to anyone. Please consider this a serious warning. Look for alternative accommodations in Hobart to ensure your health and dignity are not compromised.

I am the principal of a school in central Victoria. We have used Montacute for our annual Year 8 trip to Hobart for the past few years. Our staff have always reported that the accommodation itself was well-presented and fulfilled our needs; however, they also frequently reported that the hotel owner was difficult to deal with. During our Year 8 trip to Hobart this week, there was a security breach involving two men, one a guest of the hotel and one other man who should not have been in there, entering the two dorm rooms of our 13-year-old female students in the middle of the night. The men shone their torches around and left when asked to. However, our staff were understandably concerned about the incident. When our staff spoke with the owner, he was dismissive of their concerns, saying that the students must not have locked the doors properly. While he had asked the two men to leave the hotel, he was unapologetic to our teachers and blamed the young female students for this breach. The teacher rightly pointed out that it was difficult to believe that both doors to the girls' dorm rooms could have been unlocked. When I spoke with the owner by phone about our concerns, he flew into a rage. During this conversation, I was sworn at at least four times, repeatedly called 'disgusting' for suggesting that there may have been a security breach with the men's key, yelled at, and hung up on. Mistakes do happen, but I have the ultimate duty of care for our students and couldn't leave them in an environment like this. We moved to the Travelodge, where the staff and facilities are more appropriate. I have since read similar recent reviews about the Montacute owner's behaviour and seeming inability to control his anger when challenged. This appears to have been an experience for solo female travellers in particular. We will never stay at Montacute again, and I would encourage others to exercise caution.

My recent stay at Montacute was unfortunately characterized by the owner's (Anthony) aggressive and unapproachable demeanor. I feel compelled to share my experience to provide valuable feedback for both future guests and the establishment. Throughout my stay, the owner's aggressive behavior created an unwelcoming atmosphere. Attempts to approach the owner with questions or concerns were met with a dismissive attitude, making it difficult to address any issues that arose during my stay. Not Recommended! 👎👎👎

The hostel was clean and nice with friendly staff. They showed everything when I arrives there. The dorm were nice and check in was very easy. Also, there was very nice little back yard. Bed was comfy and curtains on the bed gave some privates. Absolutely lovely hostel.

BEWARE ESPECIALLY SOLO WOMEN!!! Anthony was rude, obnoxious & scary towards me & other fellow travellers. He stood over me, intimidated me, loudly slammed furniture in the kitchen whilst people were having breakfast. This place is not a safe or friendly place to stay as the owner has rapid mood swings & takes them out inappropriately on women.

I had a queen bed room to myself two nights, lovely old world very clean, enjoyed it immensely I was able to come and go quite easily only a few minutes walk to Salamanca and the harbour, highly recommend preachers the little pub just 100 m away and the retro cafe by Salamanca for the coffee best latte !

I stayed here one night as I had heard about Montacute and so wanted to check it out. It’s a beautiful building in a quiet location. It’s a backpackers for an older set of customer, or for people willing to pay a little extra than a YHA. A hostel environment with shared kitchen and bathrooms. I paid for a twin for myself - $110 for the night. My younger self would’ve loved it without question, but my older self was a bit tired from my day and so the loud chatter in the corridors late into the evening was a bit tedious. Earplugs helped and anyway after 12am things settled and I could sleep soundly in my comfy bed. Very close to nice coffee shops snd Salamanca.

The location of this hostel was good. But it’s massively overpriced. The worst thing about it is the owner Anthony. He’s rude and pretentious, looking for any opportunity to talk about himself while making everybody else feel uncomfortable. We were glad to be leaving here - never again.

You can’t get a better location as a tourist in Hobart than in Battery Point. Easy walking distance to Salamanca and the wharves. The price point for Montacute is very appealing but after 8 years it is looking and feeling very tired. In particular the furniture in the communal areas and the bathrooms. However, ignoring the mould on the bathroom ceilings, it is kept clean and the bedding and towels are of good quality. The balcony upstairs on a sunny day is divine!
