We drove past the Royal Oak on a visit to Swallow Falls waterfall and loved the look of the outdoor area. When we had a look at the menu online we decided to come back after our Snowdon hike the next day to try the calamari. When we arrived we realized that the outdoor area which attracted us was not part of the Royal Oak which was the first letdown of our visit. We were seated quickly by a very friendly waitress who was attentive to our needs and the service was fast. The restaurant was quiet at 5pm with only a few tables being filled. The decor was beautiful and quirky which was lovely but it was let down by the food. The food was not bad perse but it was not what we hoped or expected. Having previously been to Dylan's and Lake Vyrnwy hotel and Spa for the Calamari we were perhaps spoiled on those visits. The Calamari at the Royal Oak was so disappointing, the batter fell off, it was slightly chewy and pitifully small portions. There was more salad than there was calamari, while the salad was nice it was not what we ordered or expected with Calamari. For the main course we had a burger and the lamb. The burger was great - really meaty and lovely crispy bacon, fries were delicious and crispy and the coleslaw was so creamy. We couldn't fault the burger. The lamb was fine along with the vegetable that came with it and the sauce was tasty. However, it came with potato dauphinois which was not at all creamy or cheesy, it was dry and too crispy on top (almost burnt id say). When I asked the waitress about it she told me that is how they always come out but that she would ask the chef. When she came back she told us that one chef agreed it should be creamy and the other had said that it is how it should be. I was offered another but told it would be exactly the same so refused the offer. I was disappointed as this was part of the reason I chose the lamb and not many places offer it. In view of all of the above, I would not come back here again and can see why it was not a busy restaurant. The waitress was the best part of the visit and that's not really why you eat out at restaurants though it can make or break your visit I think.
