We used to visit The George regularly, but haven't been for a year or so. Five of us pre-booked and expressly asked to be seated in the conservatory (where we always sat before). The booking was confirmed, but when we arrived, no tables were set in the conservatory, After checking at the bar, we were told we could sit there, and that the table would be made up for us. We sat down and went to order some pre-dinner drinks and set up a tab - only to be told that we couldn't do that is unless we sat in the bar area (we even offered to leave a bank card behind the bar!). After moving inside to another table (where we didn't want to be), we were presented with a very limited menu. Two of us ordered chicken and ham hock pie - only to be told that they didn't have any. We ended up with a dry chicken schnitzel served with a little gem lettuce and some bland salad dressing. The chips were the only good part of the meal. My wife chose a haloumi salad which was very insubstantial. Service was painfully slow, but the plates were eventually cleared away. We were sat facing a blackboard advertising "a hot drink and mini pudding" but when we tried to order it, we were told "we don't do that any more" (so why not remove the board???). I eventually opted for a fruit crumble, which was good. When the bill came, we asked to split it three ways (which we have done many times here and elsewhere with no issues) but were told that one person would have to pay the full amount and sort it out (by bank transfer) with the others! It's a lovely pub, but, under the new owners, customer-service is clearly based on the Fawlty Towers model. We'll go to the Rising Sun next time!
