"We went to the Royal Hotel not really knowing what to expect.
It is set with a lovely building. The architecture is beautiful.
The hotel is set out in an odd way but I think that adds the character. You enter on the ground floor, go up two floors to reception. There is a small bar there that offers free teas and coffees.
The slug and lettuce down stairs provides you with 20% off of food if you show your keycard.
The staff are really friendly and knowledgeable about the local area.
Location is good and because we were on the 4th floor we couldn’t hear the noise for the streets below.
The room was ok. Aircon in the room with tea and coffee.
Now two great points that I’ve been saving….!!
1. The shower! Let me tell you something it’s like I was sat in a typhoon, Cardiff clearly doesn’t have an issue with its water pressure!
2. The bed, it was luxurious, I was able to sink and sleep so soundly! We need this bed for our house!"
"The location is really convenient for getting around, with train and bus stations nearby. There are also plenty of restaurants within easy walking distance, and Cardiff Castle is just a short stroll away. The room might be a bit on the small side, but it has all the necessary amenities, including a kettle. The reception staff were friendly and very helpful. It would be even better if there was a microwave! There's also a small Thai restaurant not too far away; we actually bought some food from there and ate it in the hotel lobby. Overall, it's a great place to stay. I'd definitely choose this hotel again when I come back to Cardiff."
"Very satisfied with a stay.
Hotel location is very good, five minutes walk from the train station and bus terminal, and 15 minutes to Cardiff Castle. There are several supermarkets and restaurants nearby, which is very convenient. Although there are not many reviews on Trip.com , I saw that the hotel business was very good when I checked in, and there were many foreign tourists staying in the store.
The hotel room is very spacious, enough to spread out two trolley boxes, the bed is also big enough for two people to sleep. Although the hotel is located close to the street and train tracks, the room is quiet: carpets are laid in the corridor to avoid noise, windows and walls are soundproofed, and no train or street noise is heard for two nights. The room window has a good view and you can see Cardiff Bay. There is air conditioning in the room, and cooling and heating are fine. There is no drinking water in the room, but you can pick up lemonade for free on the first floor of the hotel.
The front desk that helped me check in was very warm and friendly, and took the initiative to introduce the activities held on the day of Cardiff Castle and explain the route in the past. I regret that I forgot his name. I remember that he was a young white male without glasses. I have traveled in several cities in the UK this time, and the front desk of this hotel is definitely the most welcoming of the hotels I have stayed in.
The fly in the ointment is that there are two employees on the first floor of the hotel at the same time, and there are hotels on the first floor, restaurants, bars, vending machines and luggage storage. I feel that the employees are very busy, whether it is the restaurant ordering, checkout or check-in, luggage, It takes three or five minutes for them to come over. The staff are friendly and conscientious, but really busy. It would be nice if the hotel could arrange more staff on the first floor."
"The hotel is located in a very nice area where it’s easy to get a taxi or walk anywhere within the town.
However, the mobile signal was quite weak, and the hotel Wi-Fi kept disconnecting - I had to log in again every time, which was quite inconvenient when trying to work.
The room had a strong smell of rubber or leather, which made me feel sick and gave me a headache throughout my stay.
The shower drainage didn’t work properly - no other drainage hole in the bathroom, and it eventually overflowed. I had to call the maintenance team to fix it.
After lying on the bed for a short while, I noticed red, itchy patches on my face, almost like insect bites. I later found out that strong detergent used in washing the bedding can sometimes cause skin irritation. That night, I slept with a clean towel over the pillow and asked for fresh bedding the next day. Although my companion didn’t have any issues, I’d recommend anyone with sensitive skin to cover the pillow with a clean towel just in case.
Overall, the services provided by the hotel were not bad, but the condition of the room and the reliability of the Wi-Fi definitely need improvement."
"Great location, convenient for sites. Good rate which included breakfast. Difficult to get to by car. Using Waze is much better.
Didn’t get the room type booked but managed for 2 nights.
Agent at checkin took several minutes before acknowledging me in the queue. I would have been happy being told ”I’ll be with you in a few minutes” instead of being ignored whilst he chatted with his colleague about what seemed to be an issue. I believe because he was distracted, we weren’t given any hotel information - i.e. location of lifts, breakfast time etc. which is standard.
Breakfast service wasn’t great the first morning. Second morning was much better. I think it’s because we arrived at approx. 10:30 on the first day and the team was ready to go as I could hear them counting down the minutes to the end of their shift. No hot drinks offered; told drinks were on the buffet when in fact they needed to be ordered. Drinks eventually brought on asking again, but no cups. Had to ask for them.
Quite noisy at night because of all the bars and restaurants outside, which meant the window couldn’t be left open, as the room was quite warm, despite adjusting the temperature of the HVAC system.
Very nice, modern hotel, could improve with better staff training."
"Hotel is situated in the heart of town centre which was very convenient. The highlight of the hotel was its staff. Team in the reception was super friendly and helpful. I would definitely book again if I happen to visit Cardiff and recommend to my friends."
"It's pretty good in Wales. It's very close to the train station. The restaurant on the first floor of the hotel is very popular. The bar at night is also good."
"I couldn’t not fault the hotel, I amazing stay the staff were very helpful and friendly too. Hotel is right by central, easy access to pubs and restaurants.
The room was fabulous too OMG I didn’t wanted come home. :(
I had room service I had pasta bolognaise which was blinking lush I wanted another one."
"We arrived just before check-in time and were allowed to go into a room, but the room had opaque windows. We booked over 3 months ago, just expected what we asked for, not first come put them in there. We then waited for another room, to then get a double bed and a fold away bed instead of two twin beds. Lots of old furniture nonsense which was now in our way as not enough space due to two beds. Beds were comfy but arrangement was not.
The breakfast was very nice, could choose kippers if you wanted."
