Ten years ago, we stayed at the Glenlossie and it was one of the best B&Bs we've ever experienced in Scotland. I gave it top marks on Trip Advisor and that's a rarity! The owners were friendly, the breakfast was superb and the place had a professional and business-like air about it. So, thinking we'd head to D&G for a few days recently we thought to book again. In the interim the place has been taken over by the larger Caledonian Hotel next door and is now effectively an annexe. It goes without saying that the former ambience of the establishment is dead and gone. There was litter in the car park and old chairs and junk in the passage outside our ground floor bedroom window which we couldn't open for long because of the cigarette smoke emanating from who knows who although the constant coughing through the thin wall would suggest our neighbour was the culprit. The bathroom ceiling was peeling, probably due to the lack of an extractor and the sink lacked a plug. We bought one in a shop. To be fair, the room was attended to every day and coffee/tea/soap etc replenished (not the plug). You get the feeling no one is around to ”manage” the place. The front door is always on the snib. Mail lay about the porch uncollected. Breakfasts are now served at the big house and that's it. The buffet is average and the porridge wouldn't win an Oscar nomination any longer. It's a shame as the young East European lassies in charge are doing their best. I know covid has hit the hotel trade hard. Staff shortages are a common feature now and it's a wonder that places like this can stay open at all. in the Caledonian's case the funeral trade keeps them going, I gather. Good luck to them. But I think the use of the name Glenlossie for the ghostly building next door is a bit of a nonsense and quite sad in the circumstances.

First things first.....it's not the Ritz but for what I paid via Agoda , probably the best value for money I've spent for an overnight stay.I travelled to Bolton to buy a car for my wife and needed an overnight stay before heading home.Reviews I read to be fair were mostly accurate ....in need of a bit of TLC but my room was clean....I had a great and comfortable sleep.....in the morning, breakfast was exceptional...I just wanted somewhere overnight for a rest etc..... thoroughly enjoyed it.... very friendly service and staff.
Just home after the loveliest experience! Just a hop, skip and a jump from Dalscone Farm, (under 30 min safe walk on pavement all the way) which was my destination for several days... and best breakfast ever to start my days! And Hamilton House is a lovely leisurely walk to the River Nith, where I got fish and chips to bring back to my room. Thank you Rena and Derek for making me feel so very welcome... and for putting me in touch with Mark at DumfriesTours who took me on an amazing 5 hr whistlestop tour around the area on my last day, delivering me to the train station to head to Glasgow. Couldn't have been a more wonderful experience to mark my milestone year! love, Cathy from Canada, who'll be back to visit soon! xx PS... oh, and it's so lovely and QUIET... even though I was in a room facing Moffat Rd, I had the best sleep EVER is my wonderful king sized bed with AMPLE squishy pillows...
Stayed one night to break up the long journey home from Ireland. I stayed in room 5 overlooking the garden and a lovely church. Coffee making facilities were very good, with nice buiscuits and chocolate mints. I slept with the window open and was not disturbed by any noise. This is an old listed building, and the room looked a little tired, but I was not there long enough for this to really matter. Unfortunately I did not find the bed to be very comfortable, but you can not please every guest, and it is all down to personal preference. Breakfast was included and ordered the night before. A lovely young lady brought my breakfast, which was very good, and set me up for the rest of my journey. Would I stay here again? Certainly.

The hotel room is decorated like a KTV. The location of the hotel is very remote. It does not go into the city. The road to the hotel is blocked by traffic and causes a tire blowout. The road to the hotel is really difficult. The service staff at the hotel are very enthusiastic. The breakfast at the hotel is average. It is generally not recommended to book if you don’t have a car. It is expensive and inconvenient. My friend insisted on making a reservation, but had no choice. Anyway, the way to the hotel felt like driving into a forest. There was no one on the way and the trees were all gloomy. It was difficult to get in. The hotel didn't look like a castle to me, it just kind of looked like it. Not great value for money, other things are fine. The hotel room is really big in the UK. It also has a bathtub and a big toilet. However, the decoration is hard to say like a KTV. It is too big and looks a bit scary. The lobby looks okay during the day, and the hotel entrance is also good. It’s really scary at night~

GGuest UserStayed here for a birthday celebration long weekend with my partner. Freya was a fantastic host and very accommodating and helpful. Ample parking outside the property for cars, and grounds very clean. There was accommodation in a separate building in the grounds which can be stayed in also. Good location, we drove down but a hop, skip and jump from Dumfries train station. 10-15 min walk to town centre, 25 minute walk from Crichton park and 10 minute drive to Dumfries Royal infirmary. Room itself very modern, clean and quiet. Stayed in a double room and it had an en suite toilet and shower - well equipped and shower was fab; great water pressure and never wanted to get out! Bed was comfortable and lovely bedding. Very nice touches in the room for residents: coffee machine with nice Costa capsules, biscuits and equipped with iron and board. Got breakfast as part of our stay and was good quality full breakfast. Was just what we needed to set us up before Parkrun! Freya was very good at suggesting where to visit in the local area and we will be sure to visit again soon, we had a relaxing stay. Would recommend for anyone, staying for a work trip, visiting friends or family or having a break away. Thanks a mill!
GGuest UserWhat a great stay we had here, great location, amazing staff, lovely comfortable room with a great view . The staff were so helpful and could not have done more to make us feel so welcome. This hotel is situated in beautiful grounds with lovely walks. We can’t wait for our return visit
FFlyer61130848260In the heart of Robert Burns history is this little piece of history. I would advise you to take the walk around the grounds following the crystal clear lake around to the hermitage where the poet penned some of his famous lines. Previous reviews I read worried about my room being tired in decor but found it well furnished & well kept. Yes the building is old it's a historic place so some floors are uneven etc . There is fishing on the river if that's something you would like to do. Amazing nature around the grounds unspoilt area. The staff were really friendly and accommodating and the food was lovely. Would definitely return, we were booked in Hawthorn with a lake view. The only thing if your a light sleeper is you are above the games room if people are playing pool at night. Also if you need a socket take an extension by bed lead (1 cpap user) .
GGuest UserWe loved our stay ... 2 adults, 2 children in room 7. Fab breakfasts, big roomy room, a must was fast WiFi.... I worked from the room on Wednesday afternoon, girls on their devices at the same time on wifi.. No problems. Loads to do locally close by. Room had toiletries and was posted to additional towels and toiletries if needed.... Really found that if we needed anything we asked and it was no trouble... Extra toilet rolls, nearest sit in Chinese Food restaurant, more toast please, ... Amanda and everyone were happy to oblige and help with all and everything. Couldn't have been better looked after and had a lovelier stay.
