If you're picky, this probably isn't the place for you but if you're more the straightforward, no-nonsense type, it ticks all the boxes that matter. My room was clean and tidy, the bed comfortable and the breakfast kept me sated until late afternoon. If you have dietary requirements, though, you'll have to speak up. I was simply asked what time I'd like breakfast. There was no mention of options, vegan needs etc. I simply finished my toast and cereal and a glorious full English was put in front of me. My only dietary requirement is 'generous portions', so this approach worked perfectly for me but it won't suit everyone. The gentleman serving breakfast was a man of few words. Not rude or stand-offish, just reserved. If you loathe morning people and small talk in equal measure like I do, you'll love him. And as for the night before, don't worry about being away from the city centre. There's a Sainsburys and Vietnamese restaurant within easy walking distance, so you won't starve. The final plus point for me was the price of £43. £40-£50 cheaper than more central alternatives in a city that seems to think it's Kensington. I would definitely stay at The Shoes again.
I rate this place very highly. A very warm welcome as soon as we entered. The room was very comfortably decorated. The bathroom was lovely and the quality of the towels and bed linen was good. The bed and pillows were very comfortable - even for my husband! The breakfast was excellent and the service was friendly. There was nothing more you could want. They even had delicious homemade jam! A really great experience all round.it is possible to walk into Durham centre from here too
This is a great place to stay! The staff are very kind and helpful, the rooms are wonderful - lots of power points in useful places! - and the location is lovely, close to the railway station, a short walk into the centre and some beautiful riverside walks. I’ll definitely be back.
What a wonderful stay for us girls, for a friends 60th. Beautiful boutique hotel. Lovely, decorated, different, double rooms. Good breakfast. Great location. Thank you Daisy for looking after us! You were very kind, helpful, friendly and professional. Thank you also to housekeeping services. Cleanliness second to none, ladies were very friendly and helpful. Highly recommended. Stayed at castle view for 2 nights ,we arrived earlier than the 4pm stated check in time but this wasn't a problem at all, we had a ground floor room (room 1),the room was beautifully decorated with plenty of storage space ,hairdryer was in room and ironing facilities were also available on request .Breakfast was reordered with plenty of choice, the food was of a very high standard too with locally sourced produce I suspect , you could pick what time you wanted to eat between 8am -9am ,the dining room was decorated to a very high standard ,the staff were welcoming and couldn't do enough for you ,I would highly recommend the castle view without a shadow of a doubt .The guesthouse was on a steep hill but that was the only negative .
I stayed at the hotel for 10 nights when visiting Durham to help my younger sister. A huge thank you to Colin and Mandy and the reception staff for their welcome, kindness and dealing with any minor problems I had. Overall my stay was good , apart from housekeeping occasionally forgetting to clean my room.? This really is a management, supervision issue. The staff also experienced problems and were stressed with a huge ” Irish ” wedding which hardly affected me but management really need to look at their priorities re regular guests v quick bucks. Or ensure extra staff and security are ramped up. Whilst I did eat at the Health Club I found the service here varied from vastly efficient and helpful to unbelievably slow. Maybe the catering facility needs specific areas for hotel guests who really don't have all the time in the World to spare !!. Many thanks again and good luck.
Enjoyed experience. Took advantage of a paid for upgrade and the room was excellent. Generally, the upgrades were great (free parking), however, as part of the upgrade we got drink vouchers (6 x drinks per couple over two days). This was a bit footery as the choice of drinks was very limited (either bottled beer or glass of certain wines). I prefer draught beer and my wife doesn't partucularly like wine so we struggled what to choose. Buffet breakfasts are either hit or miss and on this occasion our experience was plenty of choice but the hot Buffet was luke warm at best. That said it is a really good hotel in a great location and catered for all our needs
Second visit to this great hotel in an historic building. Reception staff are consistently excellent, friendly and helpful (apologies I am not sure of the girl who helped us out during our stay, but she was super professional). Restaurant staff are also super - front of house, and all the team superb. The rooms are spacious and very clean. The bar is fab and a great space to relax. Only one minor suggestion is to give the coffee bar staff some professional barista training - it’s a plus point for the hotel to have a good coffee bar.

GGuest UserSecond visit to this great hotel in an historic building. GGuest UserGood value if you stay for 7 plus nights on a long stay rate. Was happy with the size and facilities in my Queen room, however it was very hot and the aircon didn't work. The hotel is set in different (linked)buildings and one of the buildings was noticeably hotter both times I've stayed there in April and May. Both times the hotel upgraded me to a room on the riverside which is much cooler (with working air con) and with a view of the river. The housekeeping staff are friendly and nothing is too much trouble. Lots of choice for breakfast and buffet kept topped up. Really enjoyed my stay - both times. Great location too!

GGuest UserWe have had an absolutely amazing stay at Ramside to celebrate my 50th Birthday. We stayed in a treehouse which was utterly superb and took my breath away!! Beautiful interiors and furnishings along with wonderful outdoor area with your own hot tub and sauna...a truly wonderful experience. The service is second to none. The concierge was literally on tap to take you to and from the main hotel. Nothing was ever a problem. The main Spa pool had plenty of seating and limitless supply of towels, robes and flip flops to make you relaxed and comfortable. The Fusion Restaurant was fabulous too. 9 of us ate at the restaurant, the food was served piping hot in beautiful Asian inspired bowls and plates and looked utterly mouthwatering and tasted delicious, we couldn't fault it....The cocktails are gorgeous too I can highly recommend the strawberry breeze for any gin lovers out there! Wow!! A huge thank you, to the wonderful dedicated staff at Ramside, for making our weekend just perfect and one to remember...We will be back!!
GGuest UserThis is a great place to stay! The staff are very kind and helpful, the rooms are wonderful - lots of power points in useful places! - and the location is lovely, close to the railway station, a short walk into the centre and some beautiful riverside walks. I’ll definitely be back.

GGuest UserThe Queens Head is a lovely little BnB/Pub my partner and I both slept incredibly well, the room was spotless and the facilities were well maintained. The pub it’s self was lively with a friendly atmosphere, incredibly attentive staff and the breakfast was to die for. I could not recommend the eggs Benedict more. I would 100% stay here again and recommend it to my friends.
Ssuifeng2019None of Britain's famous churches seem to have escaped the clutches of Harry Potter, and Dullen Cathedral is a major location for Harry Potter. The interior is very simple and the exterior is very magnificent.
TTodemmy‘The Orient’ is not an area with defined geographical boundaries. The term can mean widely differing things to different people. In the case of the Oriental Museum, the definition is a wide one indeed, with the collections covering a huge area from North Africa to South East Asia. This is the legacy of the origins or the Oriental Museum in the teaching of oriental languages at Durham University.

1137***66The Kruk Estate was first built in the 14th century and was renovated and expanded several times during the 1st century. The building is now built of sandstone, with a Welsh slab roof and a British rural garden around it. The estate is rated as a first-class protected building in the UK, and is also known as the "White Lady".
