I wanted so hard to like this place. It’s got a lot going for it, so I’ll go through all the positives first. - The hosts are great. - The view of the harbour was excellent. - Breakfast is served to your room - and it was hot. You have a table in the window to eat from - very nice! - There was a generous selection of drinks and biscuits. Sadly, there were a few things that drag it down to 3/5. - The Tassimo machine provided was in a disgusting state. We didn’t want to use it, especially as one of the pods supplied had been opened. So the excitement of having one was cancelled out by not being able to use it. - The bathroom wasn’t as clean as it could be. It needs a deep clean, the tiles for example. - The decor was tired, and scruffy in places. Things like just cleaning the paint off the socket would make a difference…it would take 10 minutes to scrape it off. - The TV didn’t work (appeared to be a signal problem). None of these things ruined the stay…but we just felt that a bit of time spent on these things would make a huge difference. I find it hard to say negative things, but I’m offering these comments as I liked the owners and this is genuine, constructive feedback.
This hotel has the reputation of being the best in the town, serving the best food in the town. OK, so it is a small town so being the best is not that hard but the room was very spacious and the food was excellent. This is not a huge hotel so the list of facilities is not quite as grand as you might expect from a top-end hotel, but most people are probably not going to stay that long in Wick. Make sure you book your table for dinner as soon as you arrive as the restaurant is rather compact.

The payment for our stay was collected before our stay, which we knew about, what we didn't expect to arrive after a long drive to find no-one to let us in. I have no issues with using a lock box to access a key or follow instructions to gain access. A printed notice on the door said the arrival times which was when we were there. A mobile number was quoted but went straight to voicemail. No other options came to mind so we were about to carry the luggage back down a flight of steps to the car and ask at a hotel If they had a room. At that point a family group came down the stairs inside, they explained how they had received a phone call earlier giving them the location of their keys. We tried it, found a key and let ourselves in. About 10 minutes later we received a call back from the owner who confirmed we were in the correct room, she had tried to ring (possibly once) , had not got through or left a message. As she was tied up with something she had asked/hoped her husband would be there. Next morning at breakfast she apologised again. If the room had been wonderful, it wasn't, I might say it was worth staying. The tiny shower cubicle door didn't fit and floor tiles badly broken, all due to the age of the building.
