This Japanese inn that is the first in Japan as well as one and only in the world is housed in a time-honored merchant house where you can lodge in on-site tatami room that was used for house arrest in Edo period.
Four of us, my wife and my wife's parents, stayed at this inn for the purpose of visiting Kaikoen during the best time to see the autumn leaves. The atmosphere of the inn, the bathroom, and the hospitality of everyone including the hostess were all wonderful. The hot water in the bath felt moist and soaked into the skin, and combined with the tatami-matted atmosphere of the daimyo-style indoor bath, it was enough to soothe the fatigue of the trip. Having to walk up a long stone staircase from the inn to go to the bathroom may be a problem for elderly people with disabilities, but the parents of the wife I went with said, ``It's a struggle to get there.'' ”It's a worthwhile bath,” he said, and went to take a bath many times during his stay. As for accommodation, we stayed at Taishokan. The stairs are steep (even during our stay, there were cases where people in other rooms fell down and ended up on their butts), and the bathroom was shared, which may be inconvenient from the perspective of a modern accommodation facility. I think the inn has a wonderful atmosphere that more than makes up for that. Just like the atmosphere of the inn, the food was wonderful and each item was taken care of. In particular, the yam rice for breakfast was very delicious and I felt great from the morning. As an additional note, the next morning, I was seen off by the friendly hostess, and after leaving the inn and visiting Kaikoen Garden, I stopped by the GIO Hills winery run by Nakadanaso. At the inn, the landlady in a kimono and T-shirt was busy serving customers, and we both burst out laughing as we resumed work in such a short time. This is also a great spot where you can enjoy a delicious Vietnamese lunch in a great location overlooking the mountains of Shinshu, including Mt. Asama. Thank you to the landlady who waved at us from the terrace of the winery until our car was out of sight. It was a fun trip!! ️
It was very clean and the staff was polite. There is a 7-Eleven nearby, but you need to walk about 10 minutes to the vicinity of Komoro Station where you can eat.
This price is very satisfying with breakfast and large bath.

I stayed at the annual meeting at the workplace. The dishes were delicious, but above all, the open-air bath ”unnosuke” (the name was derived from the castle site of the same name in the field) was pleasant. The lobby heating is a pellet stove, and the hot spring is heated by the back mountain firewood.
I stayed in room 421 on the 6th, the last day of Golden Week. It is a large 8-story building, less than 5 minutes from Komoro IC on the Joshinetsu Expressway, and just before JR Komoro Station, there is the Nostalgic Garden of Komoro Castle. The parking lot is underground and can be accessed from the right side of the entrance or from the left rear of the Nostalgic Garden, with space for 70 passenger cars. There is an elevator that takes you up to the 8th floor. The 1st floor is the front desk, a shop and a karaoke (DAM) room (shared), the 3rd floor is the dining area, the 4th floor is the Komoro Onsen bath (with low-temperature sauna), table tennis, relaxation room and guest rooms, and the 5th to 8th floors are guest rooms. A bathing tax of 150 yen per person is required in addition to the prepaid accommodation fee. Dinner time is specified and starts at 6:30 p.m. with all-you-can-drink for 90 minutes, and you must present your room key. Breakfast is served by submitting a meal ticket, and the buffet is replenished with food until the end without any problems. The bath is located up about 20 steps from the 4th floor entrance. There are 8 showers and an indoor bath with no open-air bath. The bathtub is not large, but it is a flowing bath. The rooms do not have digital terrestrial TV, Wi-Fi, refrigerators, hair dryers, amenities, or towel racks. There is also no automatic ice machine. There are only two front desks, so it is inevitable that it will be difficult to use during busy periods.
I arrived around 19:00. It was snowing outside, so I didn't want to go out and eat rice.
Then, I was offered a night meal at the inn, so I had a hokke set meal and a oyster fried set meal.
It looks like a historic inn, but the room I stayed in was a modern business hotel.
