I don't think it's the same as the route inn that has no particular features. There is a station front, but there was a considerable distance from the west exit of the ticket gate where I got off the Shinkansen at the back of the station (east exit) and to the other side. There are no other shops on this side and there is no convenience store, so when you go, it is recommended to go after buying what you need at the convenience store immediately after exiting the ticket gate.
Stayed for a night without having any of the hotel meals so will only comment on what I experienced. The hotel is situated in a very small town and it was decent considering Shinjo not being a rather popular destination compared to other parts of Yamagata. Free parking and the double room we stayed in was very huge for Japanese standards. Some facilities were old but still clean. WIFI was quite unstable though and some websites took very long to load. Staff at the reception were friendly and check in check out went smooth. There is practically nothing around the area so be prepared to go there with food if your meals are not included, and if you dont have a car. There is only a visible drug store walkable from the hotel, and I think a family mart convenience store some minutes away. We walked to a big supermarket, which was about 15 minutes walk from the hotel along the river.
What we can offer to satisfy you are natural sweetfish caught by fishing lover proprietor, daily locally produced rice chosen from 3 different brands, 3 types of baths as large, small or private, you can choose from, and all handmade dishes using thoroughly local ingredients for the purpose of local production for local consumption.

Be sure to book breakfast and dinner at the hotel as there are no commercial areas around. If you go in winter, you must tell the hotel in advance to let them book a taxi for you. The hotel is not responsible for the pick-up station. Taxi needs to be reserved one day in advance, 1060 yen from Oishida Shinkansen Station to the hotel. There is a lot of snow in winter, so don't think about driving to the hotel on foot. The hotel's breakfast and dinner are great, but don't put some clothes and small bottles of skin care products on the floor of the room when you go out. Otherwise, they are likely to be thrown away when cleaning up. Mine was thrown away.
