I've just returned from a weekend in Debrecen (and my first trip to Hungary) and could not have been happier with my choice of hotel. Pre-arrival communication was excellent, eg they arranged a taxi for me from the airport at short notice, and from beginning to end of the stay I felt this Mercure genuinely cared about the guest experience. As a solo female traveller arriving at 2am in the morning, I felt welcome and immediately ”at home”. The decor is stylish, contemporary and comfortable, the rooms are spotlessly clean and well appointed (I appreciated the USB ports), and I was impressed with the buffet breakfast, which was generous (lunch not needed!) with plenty of healthy options, such as six different seeds for toppings, and almond milk and non-lactose milk as standard at the tea/coffee bar. At most hotels, I don't opt in to breakfast but here I enjoyed it so much I looked forward to it on my second morning too. Every member of staff was really friendly and helpful. The location is great - just a two-minute walk from the main square and Reformed Great Church, as well as many restaurants and the tram stop - and yet it feels like a relaxing oasis. There are great spaces around the hotel (inside and out) for working or wasting time over a coffee. And the Cure coffee shop that's part of the complex, but I think a separate business. also has excellent cakes and drinks. The only thing I would have liked is an iron in the room (it's a bother to have to go to reception and fetch one just to take a few creases from a shirt) but everything else was so good that this minor point doesn't come close to denting my ”five” rating.

I can't recommend this hotel to anyone. Working with hospitality needs some social skills and ambitions to give the guests good service. The staff of this hotel has nothing of it. It was more a scam like and lazy staff. Let's start with the worst. When we checked out, the receptionist invented a new fee. He charged us for changing towels. We stayed three nights and he charged us for three changes. We protested. There was no information about this on the website, on ********** or in the bathroom or when we checked in. The receptionist said that we could see it on the TV in the room. We didn't watch TV - most of the channels are on hungarian. The attitude is also unfriendly. We had some things to celebrate and had a small bottle of champagne. We asked for a wine glass or a champagne glass. The portier said that they didn't have any glasses. One minutes walk from his chair there was a breakfast room with a bar and a lot of both wine glasses and champagne glasses. The breakfast was a joke. They had some deep fried vegetables that were so greasy that we felt sick when we tried it. No lactose free yogurt and no seeds or oats... just some low cost coco pops and the cheapest musli. The bread was just white and dry. Breakfast is not worth the stay. We had a hard time sleeping because of noisy drunk people outside the hotel- But the worst was to see the portier when we checked out. He had no pride and didn't even try to cover his lack of service and hospitality. I strongly recommend guests to not stay here. There are other nice hotels in Debrecen.

Hotel Obester

Can satisfy all the embarrassment of a person to the old European fan. About ten minutes walk from the city center, the hotel has only 40 rooms and it seems that there is a presidential set. There are elevators, and even more surprising is that the three windows are filled with a variety of glass bottles, it is said that there are more than 5,000, the side window has a variety of exquisite ceramic dolls, there is a huge amount above the atrium Oil paintings showing traditional Hungarian life, everything is a proper old European taste. The hotel has a small garden. Breakfast is served in a cellar restaurant. It is said that many famous restaurants in Europe are such cellar restaurants. There are not many types but enough to meet the demand. Come to Debrecen and definitely stay here.

Hotel Lycium Debrecen

The greatest advantage of the hotel is undoubtedly its location, located in the heart of the hotel and can be walked from it anywhere. The rooms are quite spacious and clean but I think the bathrooms need refreshment (a leaking tap in the washing machine or a seamless shower cabin). The big minus is the lack of kettle and iron in the room. The most convenient feature is a swimming pool, sauna, jacuzzi and a power equipment (road tracks and bicycles) available for guests. The worst side is breakfasts that don't look too fresh. The coffee is not always fresh, but when there was no water available and the waiter was asked to add this, he replied that it was no longer available. I feel that new products are lectured from the beginning of the week and then all the week are the same and there is less and less.
