Booked The Johnstown Estate for a Babymoon last weekend. Everything was great until we had the evening meal. We had spent the afternoon in the Spa, which was lovely. Had a massage and used the Rooftop Thermal Spa. All really enjoyable. Our room was very nice, made all the better with surprise treats that my Mam had arranged for our special night away. Went for dinner in the Coach House. I ordered the fish and chips and I was shocked with what arrived. The fish looked vile. The coating was doughy (not crispy) and when I cut into it, it was like rubber, the inside was grey and it looked like tuna. Being 35 weeks pregnant, straight away I was afraid to eat the fish. This is when the trouble began...... I told the waitress, I wasn't happy with the fish and it wasn't edible , she was apologetic and took the fish away, she said she would speak to her Manager. She then came back and offered us complimentary drinks or deserts as an apology, to which we said, "we will have the brownies". The Manager dropped one brownie to our table, said nothing about the fish or apologised and walked away. We were surprised it was just one brownie but at that stage I had lost my appetite and wasn't really bothered. The meal wasn't what I had hoped it would be. So we decided to pay and leave. On settling the bill, we realised the fish had been charged for. We brought it to the Waitress' attention and she said 'you got the desert instead of the fish". We thought the price of the fish would have been removed from the bill and that the brownie was complimentary for the ruined meal and evening. Again the waitress went to speak with her Manager and came back with an updated bill which we paid. On checking the bill, they had taken off the fish but added the complimentary desert to our bill. At this stage, I just wanted to leave the restaurant, the evening had been totally spoiled and I was upset, as this was to be our last night away before our baby arrives. It was very petty and completely unprofessional the way the Manager handled the situation. We had only booked one night there which we had hoped would be really special. We had booked massages and were looking forward to a relaxing night away and now I feel totally let down. We will not get that night again. I did ring the hotel and spoke to Cian, the duty manager, who said "I have spoken to the Bar Manager and told them that it was not how we deal with things here". I was told by Cian that if I come back again, there will be a note on my booking, whatever that means!
