I was disappointed in this 'hotel/lodge' that had the reputation of lovely rooms with fireplaces, river view, continental breakfast, and a friendly staff that goes 'the full nine yards'. When a Hotel merits a price when on vacation, I will always go for the best. I've thought that its a waste to save money, when on a special vacation. Think about it. Don't you lose money if the trip you've waited to take for two years has expectations of an amazing experience? One is losing money by not paying an extra $50-$100 nightly for a hotel worthy of this vacation. A 4-star lodging is luxe after a day of seeing the town. I've only just that...even 5* :). Just my MO. Murphy's did not even come close to a lodging with a bit more. It seems the lodgings in 'Estes' capitalize on 'being the only town right near the park (from this direction). This was the case at Murphy's billed as one of the best. The reception area is a separate hut where a smiling young lady will greet you. A very friendly greeting. I moved the car near 'the deluxe rooms' which cost more money as they had a river view. I needed help with the luggage. I went over to 'The hut' and asked for help. I assumed there was an employee who helped with this expected service. A Hotel that charges these prices should have one or two employees during the day. When I pay a lower price for an economy-priced motel, all I expect is a nice room and maybe a gym. As for Murphy's, for what you pay, it is not much to ask. "Nope. No help for luggage but you can park in front of your room. That Helps" Of course, there were two cars in front of our room. The room was a motel room that had been converted to a hotel room...sorta. The fireplace only worked if you bought a can of some artificial substance. Unfortunately, it only produced a tiny flame in the one area where you placed the can. No crackling fireplace. The bathroom as the room were very clean but very dated. Uh oh. Our room was that 'end room' near the road. There were plenty of cars that we could hear. Back to the hut "Hi? Is anyone here? The room is next to the road". "Don't worry. Cars don't pass much. I've never had a complaint" "Okay, although you know they are doing 'road work' up the road. "Oh yeah. You'll see that at night, all you'll hear is the river" I was getting a bit strident when my partner told me that 'The continental breakfast looked like it was going to be 'meh' and it was a 'pick up and go'. We had breakfast at a great place in town the next morning. Last, the room was just a bit...hmm...'ehh' and you wondered why you were there until you entered the park. The WiFi was spotty. Overall, we were underwhelmed with the hotel and if we'd known about some small hotels that were costly but lovely, I'd paid the extra $50 a night.Positives; Great Family Hotel. The pool for kids and the park are very close to town and free popcorn. I have ADD so I hope I stayed with one subject at a time! :)
