I stayed at Villa Maya with a tour group- a perfect base for exploring Tikal. My room was huge and had a balcony overlooking the lake. Note that this is a true resort setting- there’s a small shop selling essentials but nothing else within walking distance. Breakfast was excellent; so was the gin and tonic I had the second night after a refreshing dip in the pool. I wish I’d been able to stay longer- we arrived at 8 PM the first night, we’re out at 5 AM the next morning for early-morning birding and left the following morning!

Beautiful hotel with a resort feel and especially nice for the price. Room was comfortable, grounds well kept, staff friendly, and food at the restaurant was good. They have some great places to relax with a book or watch a sunset, and this would be a good place to take a day trip to Tikal. Guests have the option of air conditioning or enjoying the open air. Overall, a great experience and I would definitely come back or try out some of the other affiliated properties.
