After a 4 hour flight we were taken to this hotel which is about a 45 min stroll on the promenade to Funchal. There was a courtesy bus but not needed. Opposite the hotel is a mall with supermarket, clothes stores and eateries. The newsagent sells Giro cards for the buses. For €5 daily you can use the public transport for as many trips as you like. Simple load the card. You pay extra for the suburban ticket that takes you farther. In the opposite direction, again a 45-1 hour walk, you arrive at the fishing village. We caught a taxi from there up to the skywalk. We walked back down the many stepped corridors through the farms back to the centre. Our knees were wobbly by this time as the descent had taken about an hour. Enjoyed coffee and Bolas on the entire holiday. A ride up the mountain on cable car is well worth it with spectacular views of Funchal. Pick a clear day. The small cafe just near the toboggans provided pan pipe music and delicious cappuccinos as we enjoyed the vista and watched the men in pin*****e suits guiding the toboggans down the steep slopes. We returned by cable car. If its not busy, you can just wait for an empty car and hop in with just your crew. We enjoyed having it to ourselves. A visit to the Ronaldo museum was OK, a bit pricey for the entrance. They should have shown his best goals on a reel but nothing like that. Just saw trophies and pics. The botanical hardens were not in full bloom due to time of year but were pleasant to walk around. There is a museum there too with stuffed animals. A walk through the town is very pleasant. Live bands can be very entertaining on a Saturday afternoon. Hotel room was spacious replete with a mini kitchen, fridge, crockery and cookware. We had the garden view where it was quieter though I couldn't compare. Breakfast had great variety. Many lines. No complaints. The swimming pool was heated and there was a sauna too. Huge towels are provided. There is also an outdoor pool.

This hotel is classed as a 4 star hotel unfortunately I feel it’s only a 3 star. Good location and very friendly staff. Especially the chamber maids who always kept our room clean and tidy. The grounds are attractive and well maintained. Lots of Sun beds and absolutely no reserving of Sun beds at any time due to the hotels excellent policy of exchanging towels for a voucher traced back to your room which if not returned incurs a financial penalty. Sounds petty but it actually works shame others don’t adopt it. There are approximately 12 Balinese beds around the grounds which should be a lovely place to enjoy the Sun. Unfortunately these beds are absolutely filthy and in a disgusting state. (See photos.). How management can allow this is beyond me. Soft furnishings in the bedroom such as cushions and the sofa smelled strongly of stale sweat and the sofa is badly stained with oils where inconsiderate previous guests have sat. The cushions were so bad that we had them removed from the room.. The breakfast buffet is very much 3 star. Tea/coffee facilities are charged at 2 e a day for two sachets and two tea bags if you want them replacing. Safe is also an extra cost. None of this is what you expect in a 4 star establishment. The hotel is in a good location and is fine if it was just graded correctly. ( apart from the Balinese beds ).

This is a very good hotel and we would stay here again. WET AREA Indoor pool This is a great addition to the hotel and is kept at a perfect temperature with jets. It is semi-indoor so great on overcast days. Never too busy. The highlight of our stay. Outdoor pool Quite cool, but when complimented with the indoor pool, this is fine. It's a bit shallow but I imagine this is just how the hotel is built. Never too busy. Sunbeds More than enough, very comfy and clean. No need to reserve/scramble. Spa Massages available at a good price. Sauna and steam room free of charge, although the hotel doesn't advertise this very well. Snack bar Nice sandwiches, if a little overpriced. Could do with more variety of food. Great selection of drinks/cocktails as reasonable prices. Seems a bit silly that you can't pay by card. BREAKFAST A fantastic variety of tasty food; cooked, continental, cereals and pancakes. Lots of fresh fruit. We had one negative experience with a rude waiter; we were trying to take a banana and some bread each, as we knew we would be missing the breakfast (that we had paid for) the following day, due to an early hike. Before we could explain this, we were berated at length in front of half of the restaurant, even after apologising. This was unnecessarily embarrassing and marred our first day. Granted, we should have double checked the rules beforehand (we have stayed in places where this is allowed, in moderation), but, in our view, there was no need for such a public display. BUFFET We only had this once, but we felt that, for 30 euros, it was a bit underwhelming and drinks should have been included. STAFF Apart from the one exception above, we felt all the staff were a credit to the hotel, and very friendly and helpful. A special shout-out to Caterina and one barman's name whose name we regrettably didn't catch. LOCATION Buses to Funchal just outside. Close to supermarket and restaurants. Nice park and restaurant next door. ROOMS Very clean, spacious and good facilities. A bit dark at times. Good aircon. Free safe for valuables. TIPS - Rent a car with Auto Rent A Car - great service and friendly staff - Luggage room available free of charge - If hiking to Pico Ruivo, you really don't need a guide. The route is clear and is almost always busy. GetToHikes bus transfers are recommended and stop near the hotel.

Our stay at Mimosa Hotel was good. We were on a high floor (9) so a very good view from the balcony. Initially, we were met with a rude lady on reception who was awkward about checking in, we understood that we needed to wait to check in (3pm) but even at 14:55 the receptionist was particularly awkward about the room. We were on half board so before we went up to the room we had to pick what time we went for our evening meal either 7-8,8-9 or 9-10pm we opted for 7-8pm. However the same rude receptionist then said we couldn’t go at that time and had to come at 9-10pm which is ridiculous. We ended up going at 7-8pm anyway and took no notice and we always got a table it wasn’t busy. Other than that the other staff members were very pleasant. And no other complaints. The room was cleaned very well each day. The food at breakfast was ok, I don’t eat hot breakfast but the cereal was alright. The evening food was also ok nothing special, it was a bit limiting for vegetarians but I didn’t mind what was put on offer. We did eat out one of the nights in a lovely Indian called Chef Guru I’d definitely recommend it was exceptional. The hotel is in a great location, the hill is steep-ish that it is on but not as bad as some people make it out to be in the reviews it’s just like the rest of Funchal. There’s lots of restaurant near bye and a spar and also a pingo dance supermaket which was cheaper and much larger. You can catch the bus into Funchal from a couple streets down but it’s very busy, so we opted to walk. The walk is very lovely not too hilly and about 40-45 minutes. We didn’t utilise the pool as the sun wasn’t on many sunbeds in the morning we opted for lido beach club and paid there it was very reasonable €5.50 entry fee then extra for sun beds, it also has a nice restaurant inside, I would recommend going here if you want full sun all day, here there is also access to the sea. Overall, our experience was good some people are very negative in the reviews but our room was lovely and had a ceiling fan and all amenities. It was good for what we paid for it. I would recommend if you’re wanting a good deal for a holiday that’s in a good location.

Overall great stay and we'll likely be back next time we visit Madeira. Great location close to lots of restaurants and bars, and bus stops. It's not too far to walk to the city center and there's lots to see on the way there, too. The rooms were clean, shampoo etc. was provided and there were even extra blankets which we were very grateful for as it can be chilly at night. What we did not enjoy that much was the breakfast, as both restaurants serve about the same food and it was the same every morning. The taste was ok but we probably won't add breakfast the next time we stay, or not for all days. Most of the staff were friendly and helpful, however, the hotel appeared to be understaffed, meaning we'd have to wait quite a bit to receive service, e.g., at the reception, and staff seemed stressed at times.

This was our third visit to this hotel…although the last time was 10 years ago! The hotel really doesn’t seem any different than it did then, and even some of the staff are the same, which says a lot! The staff are very friendly and helpful! The hotel is spotlessly clean and the beds are comfortable. The rooms are a generous size and feel spacious. We only had breakfast at the hotel but there was plenty of choice and the quality was good. The hotel is close to the Forum shopping centre which has a good supermarket and there is a good bus service into Funchal as well as the hotel shuttle service. If I had a complaint it would be that the hotel public areas were extremely quiet in the evenings, making the place feel a bit sleepy, but I’m sure plenty of people like that!
