We loved our six-night stay at the Cathedral Peak Hotel this September. At least 12 hikes leave from the premises — we recommend taking the guided hike to One Tree Hill (or do it yourself on a nice day, but be prepared to pick your way across the river), the views are absolutely stunning! The hotel itself is a bit of a “blast from the past”in terms of style, but still very comfortable, with such friendly staff and a wide ranging buffet for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Our superior room was lovely with a comfy bed, and big shower with hot water. A big highlight for us was the gift shop. Jenny and Michelle were incredibly friendly and knowledgeable about the area and hikes, and the shop carried detailed hiking maps for the entire Drakensberg (not easy to find), as well as a good selection of local goodies. Finally, you can’t beat the views from the terrace, so if you aren’t up for hiking, you’ll still feel right in the middle of the mountains. 10/10, we hope to come back!

My husband and I go married at the Cathedral Peak Hotel in February 1988 and have never returned until now. In all the best ways the hotel remains unchanged and the mountains still stand majestically tall as they will long after we have gone. The views of the mountains are magnificent from everywhere on the property and the hiking and walking trails are amazing. The choice and quality of the food at every mealtime is world class and Alberts Bar is a warm and convivial bar for pre-dinner drinks with a view. We loved our time at Cathedral Peak and will definitely return.

We have been visiting Cathedral Peak for some 15 years now and have not had a bad experience. Walks, healthy air, beautiful setting and great staff ensure we will return. Apparently the relevant council/roads authority have not yet sorted out the Sterkfontein route from Jhb which is a big shame.
