Kohala Village Inn

Fun stop on our bike tour. Had everything we needed. Clean quiet place.

Other than the lack of coffee, and ice on the property, the limited staff availability (non existent for 21 hours of the day) and the cockroach visitor in our bathroom, the room was satisfactory and our stay okay.

Well restored and presented old plantation building; comfortable bed and in the really interesting small village of Hawi - in the equally interesting area of North Kohala. But some traps. Checkin is a mystery. Apparently I was sent an email with instructions - and I may have, but that wasn’t recent and was well lost if received. Front desk is basically unattended. We waited for someone to arrive for an hour, and were close to returning to Kona. No in room meal facilities to speak of, and limited in the area. The nearby and well thought of Bamboo restaurant opens only Thursday - Sunday. So a big yes to the property as far as it went - but be prepared for checkin and eating.

Such a gem! We really enjoyed our night.

Check in and out was easy. Room was clean and quiet. Enjoyed our stay as a sleeping spot for our time on the north end of the island.

Insufficient staff hours, no ice, left message the day before and received no reply, insufficient horizontal surfaces for storing travel items

Very clean and comfortable room. Bed was very comfortable and the hotel was very quiet. We saw very few other guests. No communication with employees and the TV did not function unless you paid for movies. That was disappointing , especially for the rate paid. We fell asleep to the songs of the frogs. A delightful first night on the island. Enjoyed hike at Pololu the next day and the coffee shop near the inn.

The property itself is well maintained and very clean. It is an older hotel which is charming. It is not at all soundproof. This would be okay, but we stayed on a Saturday night when the same property hosted a live music event. It shut down at 10pm, but we had no idea when we reserved that this event would be on. As most area restaurants close early (7pm), it meant we were in our room by 7pm and listening to the distorted noise of amplified music at a distance for three hours. Had we known about this, we would not have reserved. I appreciate that this area is suffering economically and that all businesses need to be creative in finding ways to make money. Still, this combination (evening music events plus historic hotel with no soundproofing) is probably not going to work unless they only have hotel guests who know about the event when booking and attend it themselves.
