Exquisite meal two nights in a row. The sort of restaurant that has a select menu of items that they do really well. Had the lamb one night and the steak on the following night. Perfectly cooked. Served by polite, friendly staff. Chefs Steve and Charlene - thank you for memorable meals. We'll be back.

We had two delightful meals here this week - Friday and Saturday. Amazing lamb on Friday - perfectly pink and flavoursome. We ordered extra sides, am so glad we did as the cauliflower was so magical, it took me back to my childhood and autumn evenings with its smoky mustard flavour. Saturday (tonight) I started with duck confit which was beautifully presented and very tasty. Then moved on to the miso aubergine, in mushroom broth with noodles and black rice, which was heavenly. I adore aubergine and this was perfect. Lovely staff, the barman and waiters became highlights of the trip as they were so lovely, and Steve and Charlene - the excellent chefs, I only wish I could take them home and have their excellent food every night!!!!

Had a lovely one night stay at the Old Black Lion while road tripping through Wales. We stayed in the knockout Cromwell Suite (superior double), so called because Oliver Cromwell reputably once also stayed. Comes complete with a mezzanine sitting area. Very atmospheric. Enjoyed delicious house lagers and great breakfast the next day. Also ample, easy parking. Thanks to James, Chrissie and team for a wonderful visit.

Used to be regulars here, suddenly empty and surly service (with flat keg beer!!!!) this is not to mention the obsession with car parking literally twenty posters inside and a giant banner in the garden, was ordered to enter registration number at the bar before being served ! Grim

Beautiful historic building, warm friendly welcome from lovely staff, room clean and comfortable, food outstanding quality and located in a stunning area with fantastic scenery. Room was very warm so would benefit from addition of a fan and if light sleeper would recommend ear plugs as based in the centre of town and on a road was a little noisy overnight. As with many old buildings some very very low ceilings and doors, being 6ft I had a few near misses but staff were very kind in reminding me to watch my head!

We booked for dinner while staying in Hay. Lovely dining room, oak beams etc. Welcome was not very warm. Service was prompt and the wine we ordered came quickly. When it came to order our food, we were not able to have whitebait as we were then told it was unavailable. Then told that 2 items on a very limited starter menu were unavailable. So no stater. Both decided to have rib-eye steak. The steak was large, very tender and cooked as we ordered. It came with a large mushroom and half a grilled tomato and chips. The chips in a small bowel were dreadful. They seemed liked the remainder from the bottom of a packet of frozen chips, dried and tasteless. When this was mentioned to our server it was met with a shrug! We didn’t have a desert. The dinner was saved by the steak and reasonably priced wine, but final bill of £85 very expensive in view of my comments.

Stayed here for one night whilst visiting Hay Festival. Lovely room (single ensuite) - bed very comfy and room very clean. Ate Sunday lunch here and that was very tasty. Breakfast also very good. Would definitely stay and eat here again. Staff all very friendly too. Thank you. Dr Sylvia Davies

Stayed in Hay for a couple of days mountain biking in the Black Mountains. So pleased we found the Old Black Lion - it was just what we needed. Exceptional hospitality from James and his team, superb food, great beers and a comfy bed. We’ll be back!

Sunday lunch for 4 people. I ordered fried tofu which was disgusting, a sentiment the chef agreed with!. Sent that back and ordered the trout, which was raw inside when it arrived, sent that back too. Then we were given another table's bill. Our waitress was v apologetic but I didn't get any dinner! I was only charged for my starter. I can't help feeling an apology from the management and perhaps not charging for my starter as a gesture of goodwill would have been appropriate. Whether they thought it didn't matter because I was a holidaymaker or what I don't know. But we do eat in Hay fairly regularly. Back to The Granary in future.
