We went to the Star Inn for a meal this evening with friends from Kent. Heard some good reviews of the food, we are locals, and had a lovely lunch here last year. I had booked a few days ago but when we arrived we were told there was no booking but no problem, a table would be available. We all ordered fish and chips. When I saw the meals coming over to us my immediate thought was the batter looked over done, it was very dark brown and looked hard. The fish was definitely over cooked. When the waitress came and asked if all was ok, my husband said that the fish was over cooked. She said ok, I’ll tell the chef, and that was it. We left all the batter. We ordered desserts, one of which should have been chocolate brownie. This looked more like dried chocolate sponge and was burnt. Our male friend called the waitress over and said it was unacceptable. Instead of just apologising, asking if he would like another and taking it away she asked what was wrong with it? He said you could clearly see it was burnt and asked for it to be taken off the bill, the waitress then went on to say she could see that it was burnt but they had sold a lot of that pudding and no one else had complained and that she needed to know to tell the chef. Our friend over reacted but he was surprised at her attitude. She then came back and said the dessert was taken off the bill which she was going to do anyway! I have worked as a waitress myself and sometimes you feel like saying something but you have to be professional. This wasn’t the case this evening unfortunately.
