From the outside, the hotel looks nice - almost like a resort, and the lobby is impressively ”artsy” looking. However, the room looks just TOO plain and ordinary - no artwork, no painting, no different colours - simply boring! It's as if most of the $ have been spent on the external looks and the beautiful rooftop, so there's not enough $ to decorate the rooms. The hotel also looks like it's still undergoing renovation, especially in the rooftop dining area. Staffs are friendly and helpful. Bathing area is small, and instead of a glass door, a cheap plastic shower screen is used - seriously? I also find not much thoughts have been given to the practicality of the design of the bathroom - the shower head faces the shower screen, thus splashing water all over the floor. Both bathroom and room are also dim. Language-wise, the staffs are not very proficient in English. The hotel is also situated very close to the Khon Kaen Lake, as well as walking distance to the famous temple - Wat Phra Mahathat. Food-wise, there are also some eateries and restaurants around, including a 7-Eleven. (Note: Dining at the rooftop is not expensive, so it's a good idea to enjoy the night view from the roof while dining too.) Room-wise, the room I had faced the afternoon sun, which makes it extra hot. Air-conditioning is also not very cold. Sadly, internet is spotty - most of the time slow, and one frequently loses connection.

The bed is comfortable, everything works, access and parking are good, rooms are very clean and well serviced by efficient, helpful and friendly staff. BUT . . . .Funky (though irrelevant) decor can never overcome basic problems with any establishment. There is no possible way this place deserves the high rating received. I was unfortunately forced to extend my stay so can write with some experience. First, the noise: the building has a U-shape design facing the street so it cleverly collects all the street noise and directs it into the front rooms, and what street noise. All night bikes and cars, even loud conversations exacerbated by a further design feature, the balconies, which require opening doors and therefore exclude the possibility of well-sealed windows. Then there is the white tiled floors which carry internal sounds nicely ensuring various knocks, loud TV and cleaning activity are clearly audible. Those same white tiles throughout also ensure plenty of reflected glare from sun and downlights as well. It all probably looked good in the plans! More importantly there is the kitchen, or rather lack of one. How a large modern hotel believes it can operate conveniently for guests without any kitchen or even dining area is a mystery. Again, worsened by the lack of reasonable equipment and utensils in the rooms - no sink, few cutlery/crockery pieces, no microwave which you would think a hotel without a kitchen would provide. Enquiring of desk staff what to do the answer was mostly of a shrugging nature. They didn't say eg that across the road was the hotel Le Cassia with a very pleasant dining area and breakfast for 150 baht. A walk around found some recompense in street food and a couple of fancy restaurants but they were a fair walk and not much good for breakfast. So location, also nah! To go anywhere you need a lengthy walk or a vehicle, and there isn't the ready availability of tuk-tuks or cabs as there is elsewhere. All-in-all this adds up to a pretty poor experience, despite any good points the hotel has, and it does have some as described. Value is just as available in other hotels without the drawbacks. The desk staff could be a little less sullen and more forthcoming also, and have some English - it is the hospitality industry after all. Most of this of course cannot be changed by management but more effort to overcome the problems would go a long way to improvement.

We stayed at the Mantra Varee for 1 night in May 2019 when visiting the Green Market. We did think that it would be within walking distance to the market but on advice of hotel staff we used a taxi for the short drive! Following a swift check in with the very pleasant staff we were lead to our superior room. Having paid only £16 (with a small promo included) I was instantly surprised at how big it was! In fact every aspect of the room was better than I expected for the price. Stylish decor with a decent bed, shower and wifi. Small negatives would be not a fat lot of storage if staying for more than a couple of days and then there was the bed surround. Looked good but a bit faffy and meant you had to get out of bed twice, visit and you'll see what I mean! On exploring the location of the hotel there's not a great deal in the close proximity. There is a 7-11 roughly 200 yards away and if you walk for 11 minutes you reach the neat little Fairy Mall. We had a mooch here and ate some really decent food in the court. The hotel has a pool and gym, neither of which I got to use but I took a look. The pool was pleasant looking for a quick dip but not really big enough for lengths. The gym was what I would call a token gym ie. small and poorly equipped. We did eat breakfast at the Mantra Varee and I would describe it as very so so. There is very limited choice on offer at the buffet. I had rice soup which was bland and unseasoned. There is a 'nespresso' style machine for coffee with buttons to select all manner of fancy coffees but whatever you press you end up with watery black coffee! I wouldn't choose breakfast as an option unless it was included! On the whole, the Mantra Varee is a good budget choice with an ok location and friendly staff. I would stay here again.

From the photos in Agoda, it certainly looks impressive. On the ground, it is just so-so or average. I actually booked a room on the high floor which means on the 3rd floor (highest) if you do not include the ground floor rooms; I was told there is no lift up and I will have to carry my luggage up to 3rd floor. At that moment, I was wondering what if there are families with elderly or children and with more than one large luggage, won't it be a hassle for them. I hesitated for a brief moment and ask for a change of room on the ground level even though my luggage is just a cabin bag because to me the stairs are quite steep. The location of this family-run hotel is right into a small Soi with residences and a school surrounding it, therefore the ambient in the night is quiet. Except for your neighbor in the adjoining room who decided to hold a party, otherwise, it is peaceful. Towards my room on the ground floor, the loosen door handle greeted me. I have to be careful to get the right alignment to open the door and also fear for the doorknob to be completely dislocated and ultimately blamed for spoiling the doorknob upon my first entry. Fortunately, nothing happened and luckily, it was just a one night stay for me. The room is spacious with signs of aging. It is clean and well kept but not what you will expect from the photos you see from Agoda, probably due to high traffic volume on the ground floor since most people would prefer not to climb the stairs. I suppose if this room is compared to the 3rd floor, the room on the 3rd floor should be newer in perspective. The facilities in the room seemed alright. Water pressure is excellent with constant hot water. The bed is a little hard but is fine for a comfortable sleep. There is a water container with cups available just outside the checking in counter on the foyer for free serving. But on the cold weather of December, I am reluctant to quench my thirst with extremely cold water. Checking out in the morning was simple. Just hand over the key and you were good to go. This was a one-off experience for me and I don't think I will be coming back to this hotel again.

Went to rest during the assistant exam. The hotel is near Kaen Nakhon School, walking distance to the exam in a chill way. Around the hotel there are Topsdaily, 7-11 and many restaurants. Don't be afraid to starve at all. Most importantly, the hotel is very new. The room is clean, super comfortable, the TV is Smart TV, open Youtube Netflix, enjoy, sleep well every night. Worth the price If there is a chance to come to Khon Kaen again, will come to stay again.

Facing the road is a bit noisy. Breakfast is also very simple. In the back, the room facing the lake is not bad. Um, the restaurant kitchen is good at ordering craftsmanship, for dinner. What I miss is the chef's craftsmanship.

Glacier Hotel Khon Kaen

So far Thailand's transit system has been great, efficient, and cheap. A train fare from Khon Kaen to Udon Thani was only 25 bahts, which is less than one USD, versus the alternative taxi ride that will set you back 37 USD for an approximate two hour ride. The train was clean and modern looking, have bench style cushion seats, windows that can be open so fresh breeze circulate the car preventing passengers from overheating. The rail cars have restrooms so don't worry about emergency urges. If you forgot to bring along a bottle of water or beverages, there will be someone constantly walking by in the center aisle selling drinks and snacks at a cheap price. Since this train ride was my first one, I'm content with the experience and recommend others to try it out for themselves while traversing through Thailand. Have a wonderful travels... Fellow travellers!
Rachanee Guesthouse

Affordable daily room with TV, water heater, dining table, air conditioner, towels, but the TV rarely has channels to watch so it doesn't turn on. The way up to the building is a key card system. But there is no elevator, only 3 floors high, and the outside is next to the evening market. There will be food ready to eat, side dishes, snacks, fruits, inexpensive prices, selling a lot. Including the service is very good The host speaks politely.
