We went to this hotel on the way back from visiting friends down south on the Staycation package and overall we loved it. The room (upgraded to a superior, at an additional cost) was great, as was the food and the grounds (albeit there wasn't as much to look around as we hoped for.) Both the three course evening meal and the breakfast were of high quality and my coeliac (gluten free) afflicted wife was very well catered for. Be conscious that being an upmarket kind of restaurant, the portions are very small so you may need to fill up on the bread... When checking out we noticed a charge the bill that we didn't recognise; when questioned the receptionist removed it as she didn't know what it was either (strange.) I found it odd that we overheard two other customers questioning similar charges on their bills which makes me think they add stuff on expecting that some guests won't notice or are too embarrassed to raise. Also, and I must point this out; I did not appreciate having a nearly £16 service charge added onto my bill which when I checked out which I was unaware of. This was not a cheap stay and I was under the impression that the price covered everything except drinks (a bottle of wine should have been included as well I think.) It's easy to say it is discretionary and you can have it removed, but in reality I wouldn't do that and the service industry knows it. Tips should be paid at the customer's discretion, not yours. Lots of places do this, I know, but when you have spent around £300 on one night's stay you shouldn't be having more charges adding on at checkout. If we are passing through the area again we would be sure to stay here again, but would pay even closer attention to the bill.
