Based on all the most recent reviews we arrived at The Running Horse in Littleton with the highest of expectations. Sadly, our stay was far from satisfactory. Things started well, with our arrival 30 minutes before check in time. Our room (room 1) was already available. I was somewhat dubious about its proximity to the kitchen and staff entrance when we were taken there, concerns which later proved to be well-founded. One of the attractions of our stay was the room rate of £99 for two nights room only. We had also found that there was a meal deal of £20.24 for a three course meal. Quite the bargain. We also found a handbill about the meal deal and there were appealing options on it. In the early evening, the kitchen and wait staff assembled around the staff entrance and their conversations, although not particularly raucous, could be heard word for word whilst we were reading awaiting going across to dinner. There was persistent banging of the staff door which became a nuisance. Eventually, the staff members left and we went across to have dinner. We were not offered the discounted menu, only the standard restaurant menu. When I requested the other menu, the waitress said that it wasn’t available and hadn’t been for several weeks. I pointed out that there was a copy of the menu in the folder in our room and I was told later that this should have been removed. As it was we chose from the less inspiring restaurant menu, opting for fish pie with spring vegetables and a lamb hot pot. Both were served with sautéed leeks and peas (this wasn’t specified on the menu) and I also had red cabbage. We found the amounts of fish and meat in the dishes to be rather scant although they were flavoursome. We found nothing to appeal from the dessert options - a dull selection of standards such as sticky toffee pudding, brownies etc so we passed. On returning to our room we decided to watch some TV. Again we experienced the staff gathering outside our room, chatting. The poor sound insulation meant that their talking and door banging was again an intrusion. It was at this point that I requested a room change. We were shown a second room and I outlined our concerns to the manager of the establishment. She was suitably apologetic. We carried our luggage and settled down in our second room (room 14). Unfortunately we were again aware of three men drinking and chatting in the courtyard area outside our room. This went on beyond 10:30 pm. In fairness when I opened the door I was asked by one of the men whether their chat was disturbing us. I said that we were aware of their chatter and he politely said that they would finish their drinks and go elsewhere. Having already had a disappointing experience overall, it was disheartening to find minor faults with our room, such as having no plug for the sink, the TV not being connected to the internet, the leaking shower head ….. . In the interest of balance, the toiletries and towels were of a very high standard a
