What a jewel of a find. We stumbled onto the Castle Hotel on our way from Killarney to Cork. It’s in the cutest town, off the beaten tourist path. The town had just hosted a music festival and the streets were still colorfully decorated from the weekend of music. The hotel is a little old but has a historic feel with all you could need —a working air conditioning unit, a comfortable bed (we like our mattress a little firm), USB ports to charge our phones, towel warming rack in a marble bathroom. The hotel staff are warm and friendly, as were the locals we met at dinner. We had a very delicious meal at the Dan Buckley Bar and Restaurant attached. There weren’t a lot of dining options in this small town, especially since we got to town late, but were pleased we could still have a warm meal at 8 pm in this quiet town. The hotel also has a cafe where I had the best scone I tried in Ireland. Macroom is in a central spot if you want to avoid the tourist traffic and within an easy drive to the southern coastal towns, Ring of Kerry and the Blarney Castle. We loved our short time here and on a future trip would stay longer and use as our home base for the region.

Two night stay which we enjoyed. Friendly staff, lovely food and good selection of choice for breakfast. All food is locally sourced. At the door of the hotel from the rear car park is a notice and phone so if you need help with luggage you can call rather than having to get all the way to reception to ask which is a nice touch. The room was spacious but we found the decor to be dated and very dark. The TV channels were too basic. Other than that we enjoyed our stay.

Fantastic experience and the staff are fabulous. 10 out of 10 for service. Could not fault anything. So central with plenty of parking on site at rear of hotel. The breakfast selection was brilliant with plenty on offer at the buffet and great a la carte options. Staff very fast at refills and they couldn't be nicer. Great value too.

Excellent Hotel. The staff were friendly and attentive. We arrived late so we dined in the restaurant, it had a good selection and used the best produce. The suite was spotless, stylish and modern. We had a late breakfast, a feast for the eyes, it was perfect stay.

By a strange coincidence, three of the hotels we stayed at in southern Ireland were all "original Irish hotels" which is a thing (has its own website too). This is one. An older place with newer wings added in the 1990s I think. Central heat, no thermostats in rooms. But has the addition (in the "new" wing) of an area wall unit which can heat or cool. Still advisable to open a window or 2 to help regulate the temperature down a bit. No matter what anyone tells you, Irish hotels are being actively heated in May/June; take the low temperature ranges you are given on weather reports seriously. Add in for wind and/or clouds and it will probably feel a bit cooler than you expected outside, but possibly too warm inside. As usual the older parts are very charming and possibly even quaint. And the newer modern construction is more utilitarian than luxury. Really a 3-star place that used to be much (much) finer back in the days of yore. One lift/elevator, but yay! The staff could not have been more helpful or more pleasant. Tricia behind the desk and Gemma in the restaurant/bar are particular stand-outs, but *everyone* was very nice to us down to the wonderful woman who brought one of us a latte every morning at breakfast and the lads who helped us with our luggage arriving and departing. The car park is conveniently located immediately in the rear of the hotel, you will have to drive round the block to find the almost hidden entrance but the car park is large. Some accessibility concerns, but the staff helped us around them. The food in the restaurant was very good; we are informed by locals that the hotel restaurant is one of the three best in the town, which we believe. The bartenders are busy but convivial in the down times and the staff chips in and makes service a group exercise. No body lotion or conditioner in the hotel, which is not typical of 4-star experiences. General Notes on traveling in old hotels in Ireland: Older hotels in Europe are charming. They are also old, meaning that most modern physical amenities had to be retrofitted as was possible. If you like charming old places which can at times be quite lovely, with stairs and lack of modern accessibility, but which have no or little central heat and rarely air-conditioning of any type, then great! But you should be informed as you make those bookings. No venting means typically radiator heat and no thermostat in your room – the whole building is heated and you can't change it. In the rare event there is a thermostat you most likely can't alter it more a couple of degrees. If there is no AC then you typically must regulate the constant heating in your room by opening the window (and I never saw a screen anywhere we stayed in Ireland), so then the cold air outside and the stifling air inside can fight it out. Bathrooms are going to have some amenities and not others. We never saw a bidet-toilet in Ireland, which are ubiquitous (for example) in Japan. Often the s
Response from Property: Thank you for your recent visit to Macroom and your feedback, for which we are most grateful. We are indeed proud members of Original Irish Hotels, a collection of amazing hotels nationwide, with the majority being family owned and managed. Our property is now in it's third generation of The Buckley Family. We are thrilled to learn that you enjoyed your visit so much and I have shared your kind comments with our team. It is worth noting that of our 56 bedrooms, just 10 are without air conditioning. We do hope that should you be back in Ireland again soon, that you will once again choose The Castle Hotel for your base for touring the spectacular South West.

Very comfortable hotel. We were made very welcome. Good large clean room. Would return anytime. Only small criticism is that the free internet is rather slow. Always managed to find a space in the hotel free parking area. The restaurant, serves extremely good meals. The breakfast was either a first class cooked, or a help your self buffet. Both set us up for the day

Heard that there was great food here. So called in today. The food was burnt and unpalatable. All over cooked and greasy. My husband rarely complains, but he said ir was worst ever. Waitress was very nice, seats and floor were dirty. Chef really needs to be replaced

I have been staying here every few weeks and I have to say that the staff are the most nicest people I have ever met, nothing is too big or small for them. They are the best! The rooms are so spacious, very bright and between the bed and the shower, it is like heaven. I highly recommend staying here.
Response from Property: Thank you! We are so grateful for your continued visits and of course this excellent feedback. We really appreciate you taking the time to write your review and I have shared your kind comments with all our team.
