Hotel Helvetia Thermal Spa

It is very difficult to write a review of this place, because it was chosen for me as part of a tour and not by me. The hotel itself is lovely, the staff is very friendly and attentive and obviously the spa services are a treat. Loved the spa pool itself after a day of sight seeing. My only drawback, as it is with most hotels these days, is that they use very firm mattresses and theirs killed my back. I wish hotels offered different types of mattresses per floor and gave you a choice. If you were looking to stay off the beaten path, then Porretta Terme could be a good choice: it's a very quaint little town along the Reno river with a variety of shops and restaurants and has some great street art. Having said all this, as a person who was in Italy for the first time, I found that staying in a place that was about a hour and a half away from both Florence and Bologna by both car and train to be a little problematic, especially when there is a high speed train between Bologna and Florence that only takes a half hour. I felt a bit trapped staying so far outside the cities and would have stayed in Bologna if I had it to do over again. I find it's better to stay in a central city and travel outside of it than the other way around. But a more seasoned Italy traveller might prefer Porretta Terme.

The room is very large and well-equipped. It is very good in Milan. In the suburbs, don’t get in and out of the hotel too late. It takes about 5 minutes to the subway station. There is a large supermarket. Breakfast is okay. It’s cheaper than eating outside. The keychain is too heavy. The door lock can be opened after a long time

Booked a three night stay at this hotel on 11th April 2024, on arrival to this hotel we was only then informed that the Swimming pool was not in use due to it being seasonal, to which we was not informed of and we only booked this hotel due to it having a pool so we was very disappointed. We informed them we was not informed of this on your website and the two receptionist just looked at each other and said its seasonal. the next day we went to reception to inform them that the heated tail rail and air con was not working in our room number 86 to be told they was looking into this and we complained three times only to be fogged off and nothing was done to rectify the problems. To which we found this very disappointing and it ruined are break away. We emailed the hotel to complain about the issues we had when we returned home but they didn't even have the courtesy to email us back.

On first approach, it was clear to see that this hotel is quite far out from the city centre however explains why the prices are a lot cheaper. My partner and I stayed here in July 2022 for 4 nights and I must admit, we loved the room and overall feel of the hotel. Rooms were very clean and beds were very comfortable. We slept amazingly!! If it was just based on rooms alone, we would give this hotel five stars. However… We booked this hotel mainly because it had a pool. When we asked about the pool, we were informed we needed to book a 1 hour slot if we wanted to use it during that day. This was due to covid measures which were still in place at the hotel. So we did. Booked a 1 hour slot for the pool the following evening. When we arrived at the pool on the lower level, we noticed that the changing rooms were locked and the showers were turned off…due to Covid. Now I would typically understand some reasoning for certain covid rules but this just seemed ridiculous. A couple who were using the pool in the hour slot before us informed us to use the small shower cubicle to get changed as this had a frosted glass door on it and is the only bit of privacy you get down there. So we did! We ended up booking the pool out another two times on our stay but as reception advised following our first pool visit, get changed in your rooms then head down to the pool (assuming you don’t need to get the key from reception to unlock the pool). Towels were provided by poolside although on the first day, there was only one towel left for the two of us. On my final visit to the pool on the morning before we left, I had to go to reception in my swimming trunks because the pool was locked. Something I felt uncomfortable doing in the first place but as there was no changing facilities and the towels were locked by poolside, I reluctantly went to reception where the man behind the desk got angry at me being there in my swimming trunks. Simple solution would be to open up the changing facilities down by poolside to prevent this but hey, that was too obvious. Upon pointing out the fact that the changing facilities in his hotel were locked because they won’t open them due to Covid (which he should have known), he eventually calmed down and mentioned he understood. On our visit we also used the electric bikes which were at reception for a full day at the cost of €25 per bike per day. The system is far to complicated for what it needs to be and should be made simpler by just having reception deal with the booking. Once eventually booked, we were given the keys to the 2 bike locks, helmets and some netting for our hair (another odd covid measure which doesn’t make much sense as you will sweat through the netting anyway). As I was away to take the bikes out, I noticed that all four tyres were flat. Surely this should be inspected by the staff before the bikes are taken out?! Unfortunately staff appeared clueless on what PSI the tires had to be at and as he pumped up the first

There is a lot so I am just going to point form this - WIFI was crappy - No hot water in shower even though they came up to fix twice. Hot water at sink and bidet, just not the shower. - First night checked in at 6:30pm after travelling 24 hours and there was a wedding until 1am. Music was loud. Then the next Friday there was another wedding until 1am and the music was getting louder and louder with each song. Complaints to the front desk did nothing. Perhaps they could have let us know this before booking. - Same menu for lunch and dinner which never changed. Definitely not a 7 day menu. - Rooms smelled mildly of sewage and musty mildew. - Beds are outdated and hard. - Housekeeping would constantly leave you with less than half a roll of toilet paper and most days just made the bed and wiped the sink. Several days we were skipped completely. - No screen on window to allow ventilation. Others in our party complained of bugs in the room as a result. - Not allowed to use AC during the day and at night we were told no lower than 23 degrees. - Safe never worked and isn't even bolted down. - Pool is NOT for paying guests. It is only for locals. If you want to use the pool you need to pay extra. After putting up a fuss they allowed us to sit by the pool however not use the pool. - There were 6 of us have lunch and laughing at the pool area and were were politely told to be quiet as we were bothering the locals who were sitting behind us. - Restaurant staff were friendly however would frequently forget your order and meal completely. - Owner always looks angry especially if you spoke any language other than Italian. 10 years ago this could have been a 4/5 star hotel. Now its old and musty and needing repairs. Save your money. Go somewhere more updated.

We have arrived to Social Hub in Bologna for our Easter break. Check in was easy - although a bit surprised we had to pay further bill for our stay (city tax wasn’t apparently included in the booking). The communal space is as on the photos. We haven’t used many amenities as the pool was still closed and when we asked about pink pong rackets there were never available (even though nobody played at the time). But I particularly liked the fact most of the plants were actually real. That was a lovely touch. We opted out from having the breakfast (for 12.50€ per person) and had coffee and croissants instead which worked out much cheaper. Our room was spacious (lovely high ceiling) and perfectly clean. Perhaps a little armchair would be nice as it felt a bit empty with just a desk & chair, bed and simple clothes shelving. But for short stay it was ok. There was no complimentary tea or coffee in the room. Just some water bottles. The rest was a payable mini bar. The TV had only one English speaking channel (BBC news) and wasn’t compatible for mirror screening with iPhones (Androids only). Bathroom was super clean. We found the water pressure a bit low but still manageable. Overall it’s a nice place to stay as it’s conveniently placed a stone throw from the train station and walking distance from the old town. Staff was friendly and helpful. Thank you for having us.
