The Elephant at the Market

Lovely stay, exceeded our expectations. Right in the centre of Newbury, on Cornmarket, small but cosy double-room, big bath. Lunch and breakfast very tasty, friendly service. Quaint sloping floors with doors cut to fit were a nice feature!

First impression wasn't great. On entering our deluxe double room (Called POM) it was very dark and depressing. This was due to one of the blinds being broken and couldn't be opened. There was toilet paper on the bathroom floor and the previous guests used towelling robes were screwed up in the wardrobe. I asked if there was another room we could move to and was told they were fully booked so couldn't move. We were worried about noise as ear plugs were provided but this wasn't an issue for us and slept really well. The bed was large and very comfortable. Breakfast was delicious and very fresh with lots of choice. Could be a nice stopover with a few tweaks.

We ate here again today (after a bad experience in April) and have eaten here a few times so did not want the poor experience to overshadow all the good times. Today we had two club sandwiches a fish finger brioche with skinny fries and a pudding of sticky toffee with salted caramel ice-cream. Greeted by polite friendly staff food was tasty hot and fresh and we did not need to wait long for it either. We really enjoy this pub for food and drinks and wanted to leave a positive review after a negative experience.

Stayed in the deluxe room, very spacious, clean and cosy! Nice little view over the Main Street (Babar room) - great location and free parking was a nice addition. The lamp table lamp needs a new bulb or changing though, it kept flickering! Otherwise, the stay was faultless

Great value room in the centre of Newbury, staff are very friendly and helpful. We had only had breakfast but that was nicely prepared and very tasty. Although we live locally we were meeting friends for new years eve, and this is a much better option than taxis or trains. Will be returning to see what the food is like in the restaurant in the evening.

Nice little place to stay. The room we stayed in was just outside of the building that is shown but by no means was this an inconvenience. It was on the ground floor so no carrying bags up and down the stairs required. The staff were friendly, the property nice, the room was small but cozy and comfortable and the food was good. Parking was free and onsite which is always a bonus. My only complaint was that very early in the morning, someone emptied what sounded like a huge trash bin full of glass bottles which startled us both. I would stay at this property again if in the area.

Arriving at the car park is a bit awkward as there is a barrier and you have to get out of your car to press the button . We knew where it was due to looking for it on Google Maps earlier but if you did not know this you would find it difficult to locate . When parked, we walked to reception but we had to wait as nobody to be seen and then once booked in, we were shown to our room, which was one of those outside. The room was a bit dissapointing as was very small and felt cold and dark. It felt like you would not have a comfortable stay. The room was not like those in the pictures on the site. Very similar but not as nice. The room was quite clean , clean bedding , towels, bathroom etc although there were cobwebs in the bathroom and bedroom . We even had a mosquito in the room as I was bitten and saw it flying around on both days. I never slept well at all on both the nights we stayed. It was either bins being emptied about 4am or neighbours , who were talking on the phone i believe but you could hear every word. The coffee machine was not working very well and you had to press the button several times to get a full cup . No other means for coffee and only black tea so if you didn't want either you were stuffed! Four suger lumps on day one then only two for day two! We were very glad to be leaving after two nights and so glad it was not three nights as I usually book when down this way. Again on checking out we had to search for someone as a deserted reception .
