Artful Lodger

This was on ok place for one night. Pros: -friendly greeting -observation deck -parking lot -cookies upon arrival Cons: -uncomfortable mattress and bad pillows -due to us being in the downstairs front room we heard all the street noise and it was LOUD -no AC or fan in the too hot room -no deadbolt or second lock on the door to our room -breakfast isn’t served until 8:30 We were greeted by one host and met gruffly by another the next morning. We went up to the observation deck to check out the views and when we sat down at one of the dining room tables we were abruptly told that breakfast wasn’t until 8:30. When we asked if there was coffee (there was old coffee in the coffee pot in the dining room) we were told it was on the first floor. I just assumed there would be coffee in the dining area. Silly me. Take care, the stairs are steep and narrow. It might be an issue for some. It was ok but we will not return.

The co-owner /innkeeper, Heidi, was very friendly and accommodating. She greeted us and gave us some good tips on things to do and see. The inn itself is a little tired. Very clean but run down. Garage sale furniture. Bed was comfortable and pillows were fine. It was helpful to have the parking lot. Breakfast was good- be aware of climbing 2 sets of very steep stairs to get to it.

Heidi, the owner, was very friendly and welcoming when we checked in. Our room was on the first floor and it was perfectly nice, not fancy, but clean and comfortable. The breakfast was fantastic and the yogurt was the best I have ever had. The parking was convenient and the location was close to a lot of the attractions. No complaints and we would certainly stay there again.

Ample parking, great location. Very steep stairs, we stayed on the second floor. Keurig, refrigerator. The innkeeper checked us in then we never saw her again the 3 days we were there, except when she left on her scooter. She left a number to be reached on but what we needed was soap and to refill the refrigerator with water and we did not want to bother her with that. We were encouraged to leave a tip for the room maid but she didn't make the bed, replenish soap or remove dirty dishes. She did put clean towels in which we did not really need. The pillows were horrible and hard and there was not duvet on the comforter. The breakfast was good but they are a stickler on the 8:30 am breakfast time. I went up just to get coffee (because they have a special blend they make) and to look out over the harbor view and I was greeted by"what are you doing here we don't open till 8:30." I explained what I wanted and she said to go downstairs and make a Keurig.

Walking into the Artful Lodger in Newport is like walking into the warm hug of a long lost friend. This is a masterful renovation of an 1850 grand property. The room we stayed in was beautifully appointed, with period details lovingly incorporated throughout the property. Heidi is an EPIC, classic, New England Innkeeper. Heidi cares deeply about her guests' experience and she goes waaaaay above and beyond to make sure you are happy, comfortable and welcome. We felt more relaxed than we had in years! Everything fun and interesting in Newport is just a few minutes away by foot or car. The breakfast was wildly delicious and the view from the third floor breakfast room is breathtaking! If you would like to be welcomed, relaxed and enjoy an incredible, classic New England inn experience, look no further than the Artful Lodger.

We absolutely loved our stay at the Artful Lodger! It was a last minute trip and we didn’t arrive until late in the evening, but the self check in was simple and parking is easy. The Estelle room was clean and comfortable, and we had everything we needed.

We had a wonderful stay this weekend in The Artful Lodger Inn. Honestly when we booked it we didn’t have much expectations from the photos online, however they do not do this place justice. The rooms were spotless clean, the bed and pillows were very comfy. The welcome cookies on arrival were a lovely treat. We were arriving in late and this was accommodated for us. The breakfast was fantastic and they went above and beyond to do takeout for us as we had an early start Saturday morning. We will definitely be back to stay, this truly is a little gem!

The Inn is in a great location close to the Cliff Walk, mansions on Bellevue Avenue and the quieter side of Thames Street. Our room had a very comfortable king sized bed and was very clean although a little tight for two people along with the barely adequate bathroom/shower/sink accommodations. Also the noisy room air conditioner could be a nuisance but it kept the room cool. The toiletries were at the level of a Quality Inn which was disappointing considering the high price tag. It would take very little to upgrade these little touches which do make a difference and are a fair expectation while staying at an expensive Inn. Breakfast was very good and Eileen made an extra effort to make it delicious. Also the breakfast room is enjoyed at the top floor conservatory which has a lovely view of the port. Overall, a nice, functional Inn that with a little more attention to detail would easily be five stars.
