Sun Mountain Lodge

Old property with a beautiful view. Friendly staff, good food. Really quiet.

We last visited Sun Mountain Lodge in October 2021. Our experience then was phenomenal with dining, service and hospitality excellent. We found the current lodge experience a definite poor experience. Aside from breakfast we would suggest dining elsewhere, which means a minimum 50 minute drive back and forth to either Twisp or Winthrop. The main dining room is only open from Thursday through Saturday. We had one dinner and one lunch in the bar restaurant. Both were very poor experiences., Th e lack of service staff meant long waits to order and very long waits to get your food and long waits to pay. The food was OK at best. For the meal prices one would expect a much better experience and menu selection. I don't fault the service staff as much as management who appear to be operating with a skeleton staff. Also be aware that you must request daily housekeeping. The front desk are to make you aware of this at check in. Ours did not and we did not read the counter sign referencing housekeeping on request. For the room price we will not return unless they completely improve their service.

We needed a roll-over bed to sleep one extra person in a king bedroom. When there was no staff available late night to get the roll-over, Sun Mountain Lodge went above and beyond to accommodate an empty adjacent room. Do note that this is not a busy day, but still, this was great customer service. This was our second visit in 2 years, and we will be returning soon... The breakfast service was great; not over priced given it is a tourist spot, and brunch items were savory (not bland at all). The tranquility of the hot tub and swimming pool area between Gardner and Robinson needs to be experienced... And, I got amazing astrography pics...

I could not give this place a five or fours across the board because there was a few things that was not up to par. First of all no TV in the room to catch up on news which wasn’t a big deal. The fireplace didn’t work and upon telling the staff about it it wasn’t repaired Before the next day when we left. The small movable mirror in the bathroom was broken… The switch had been pushed in. I fix this on my own so that my wife could use it. I gave the staff fours because upon telling the front desk manager the situation when we checked out he did knocked some money off the total bill

We have been coming to Sun Mountain Lodge for many years. Two years ago was our last visit, when we heard of the change in ownership. We were hopeful. Oh, dear…our room was spacious and relatively clean, minus the bird poop on the inside of our bedroom door. No soap or lotion in the bathroom. We are out of body wash too! No housekeeping attention throughout our 3 night stay. We had to go to the front desk ourselves and cart back toilet paper and coffee. Woke up first night. Power out. We came to the lodge and other guests let us know they were serving scrambled eggs in the bar. No staff addressed the outage or gave any update. The next morning, there was a scheduled power outage. Fine. ‍♀️ Food quality is massively diminished since we were here 2 years ago and in the many years in the past. Sadly the service is too. I could share more, but I think this is enough. My hope is that this is a transitional time and hospitality will be restored. Until then, we won’t be back or recommend to friends.

We stayed at SML years ago, under the former owners, and had a delightful time in the lodge and on the trails. We decided to make SML our first stop on a WA State road trip, starting in Seattle. Knowing that we would have an almost-flat battery on arrival, SML warned us that it might be a little competitive to get one of their three chargers. On their advice, we postponed our trip to arrive on a Monday, when the staff indicated that we would have a higher likelihood of getting a charger. We arrived at the top of their hill, after climbing for some 5 or 6 miles, with single-digit battery remaining. At check-in, we were given a slip of paper to leave on our dashboard, so that we could be contacted to share the charger, when our car had completed charging. When we arrived at the charging stations, only one car had that slip of paper on the dash, and I asked whether the other two were guests. One of the staff came out and said that she knows who owns one of the vehicles and that she would see if he could move it. Well, after some discussion, we found out that one of the cars belongs to the new owner, and that he supposedly could not be found on the property. It did not seem likely, in this remote location, that that his car would be there and he would not. Assuming that the staff was covering for him, I agreed to take a refund and go elsewhere. I also assumed that the other car with no slip on the dashboard was also some person associated with SML. PlugShare describes SML as having only one charging station, although there are three stations physically installed. I decided that PlugShare provided an accurate description of having only one charger for their guests to use, as two seemed to be used by the owner and other staff. My 2-dot rating is a result of giving SML a zero for the amenities (EV charging in this case) added to a 4-dot rating for the room, which is showing signs of age. EV drivers should definitely go elsewhere for their stay in the Winthrop area.

There were some lapses such as our room not getting cleaned despite our putting out the doorknob request for maid service, and the room being only 50 degrees when we arrived, despite our reservation so they knew it would be occupied. You should also realize when planning your days that Sun Mountain Lodge is a 17 minute drive from Winthrop shops and restaurants. However, we had a nice view, the room was roomy, and Methow Valley Trails does a great job maintaining the Nordic trails, so overall it was a good trip.

Beautiful room with stunning Mountain View’s and fireplace and big jacuzzi tub. Clean cozy lobby, nice bar. Only complaint is limited dining options but overall very good!
