Truly an amazing hotel with extraordinary, and highly accommodating service— certainly the best in Johannesburg! We stayed twice (with Amex FHR) on a recent trip and were upgraded to the Presidential suite, which is more like a luxury apartment. Unlike other FHR properties they take it seriously, with exceptional amenities as well as the upgrade. We previously stayed many times at the Westcliff but will not stay anywhere but the Saxon in the future.

Excellent service and facilities. The welcome experience was outstanding with Obakeng at the Welcome Desk. Robert provided exceptional service. Food quality was excellent. A high degree of professionalism across all departments. The hotel was very clean both in the room and public areas including the pool area.

We rapped up our three week stay in South Africa/Africa with an overnight in the Saxon which turned into 2 nights due to a cancelled flight. The staff could not have been more accommodating or gracious. I want to recognize Thembelihle and Bheki, who we had the privilege of getting to know during our stay. They are truly genuine and sincere people who made the stay extra special. I wish them success going forward in their young careers. We booked through AMEX Travel, which the hotel was kind enough to upgrade us to the Presidential Suite. I am not sure if I have stayed in a hotel suite that large and well appointed. Thank you to the staff at the front desk for their generosity as well. I highly recommend the facility if you have the opportunity to visit.

I absolutely hated my stay at the Saxon, however, that was not entirely their fault. It was a matter of compatibility, and we were not compatible, so they still get 4 stars. The things that they could control are the things like the lizard in my bathroom; the absence of snacks in the snack box; the 2 outlets in the room that are in completely inconvenient places; the impossible lighting; the extremely frustrating TV remote; and the slow restaurant service. But those things aside, if you like people putting your napkins on your lap for you, or hunting you down to make sure you don’t need turndown service despite having said you don’t… then this place is for you! It is VERY bougie and if that’s your thing, you’ll probably love it.

Stayed here for 2 nights at the end of a long safari in Botswana. The majority of the hotel was under construction which included the main pool, outdoor terraces, lounge, main restaurant. There was only one small area for a guest to go outside around a small lap pool but services were non existent there. The restaurant GREI was in a small cramped space with average, overpriced food and no convenient restroom to use. You have to go downstairs past reception and into the banquet hall. Breakfast was a hike through a tube over to the other side of the property into what looked like a corporate meeting area. The rooms were outdated with threadbare and worn furnishings. There is no coffee maker in the room. The place lacked any charm, nothing to do there and service was mediocre. Something must have happened here when you read other reviews. I would not recommend this place nor would I return. BEWARE of construction as it says finished approx May 31 and there was no way it would be completed.

Rooms are all spacious and well fitted, although the light controls and especially TV controls take a bit getting used to. Service was OK, staff at restaurant sometimes seemed a bit frazzled by simple requests. For example ordering two of the same drink at the same time but having them delivered 10-15 minutes apart. That being said food was pretty good once it arrived. Internet went out during our stay and it was impossible to reach front desk at times. Not sure how this happens but not answering phones for in house guests is unacceptable. A lot of constriction also going on, indoor restaurant non existent and one of the pools closed. Food is served in what seems like a temporary space. Not sure I'd recommend this hotel unless you must be in Johannesburg and specifically in that area.

We only stayed here for one night. The hotel has an interesting history associated with Nelson Mandela who stayed here after his release to write his memoirs. The hotel is beyond luxury with the excellent service which goes with it hand in hand. The drive to the hotel from the airport is interesting and I will say no more. It is only in relation to the difference between the townships and the unbelievable luxury next door. Having said that for luxury and service worth a visit.

The Saxon is a beautiful property but it was the service which set it apart. Switched on intelligent staff who were really focused on ensuring guests got what they wanted from their stay.

Top notch from the minute you arrive at the gate! The Saxon does not leave anything behind when attending to the needs of its guests. Spectacular grounds, lobby and especially the rooms are top-notch at this hotel. The Spa treatment I received was amazing, as well.
