First the lodge itself and the location is spectacular. Our room was clean and comfortable, front desk staff was outstanding. We had several meals at the restaurant and that too was great. The problem was with their equipment rental operation. We started to book a half day rental for a slingshot. They took our payment, then gave us an email link for us to download and sign a rental agreement. Later that night we took a look at the paperwork and it went on and on and on. We actually read several sections of it, and the more we read the more reluctant we became to sign it. We also discovered that from the location of the lodge to all the places we wanted to visit that day...needles hwy, Mt. Rushmore...was about 1.5 hours one way. That meant that a half day rental would not give us enough time to do anything once we got there. So it was a stretch of the budget to do a half day, so a full day was just to much. We decided not to sign the agreement and just take our car. The next morning we informed the rental office of our decision, and they promptly let us know that our payment was non refundable. I reminded them that we had not actually signed any type of agreement at this point, but their stance was the same. The manager of the rental equipment would not even come and speak with us. At this point I could feel the heat building up in my neck and told the gal that it would be best if I just left and deal with some other time after I had cooled down. That was toward the end of our stay, so the next morning we just packed up and left. After getting home I wrote a letter to the manager of the lodge, explained everything that happened and mailed it to them. Its now been about 3 weeks since I mailed that letter and have heard nothing from them. So basically we paid $350 for a half day rental that we did not use and to date they have refused to refund our payment or even reach out to us in any way. We did enjoy the lodge, but the rest of the experience left us feeling disappointed. I myself though we were reasonable. With room and dining we spent over $1,000 with them on top of the $350 the rental office kept.
