It was comfortable and nice that it was a hostel but had a private bathroom in the room! It was close to the beach and had various facilities so it would be good for a long-term stay.

When you enter the hostel, the reception and entrance are the impressions that make the difference. The hostel is clean and the reception is bright and friendly. I was surprised to see a bar on the first floor, and they said they were having a party. I was there on Monday and Tuesday, and it was my birthday that day, and it was a crazy bingo party. Thanks to that, I had fun celebrating my birthday in a foreign country. There were also new things because I was the only Asian. The kitchen was clean and not crowded, which was nice. On the other hand, the cooking space was relatively small. The room was clean and it was comfortable and nice because I opened it on my mobile phone. In other places, you have to swipe your card 3-4 times to enter. It was a blessing to have a bathroom in the room. However, there was only one bathroom, so it was a game of wits. The most important thing is that Kildavich is very close, and there is also Woolworths nearby, which is nice.

It’s a cold winters morning in July and you wake up with a hangover from Big Willy’s Monday Night Bingo at the bar downstairs the night before. You can’t remember what happened but there’s smudged red lipstick on your cheek and $400 cash in a bucket beside your bed. You get up to take a shower in your 8 bed dorm room’s en-suite, making sure you’re the first in there because there’s nothing worse than using the bathroom after 7 other people first thing in the morning. After getting dressed you go down to Ackland Street just round the corner from the hostel and get the best coffee of your life from one of the many famous cake shops. It’s a beautiful day and the air is crisp so you take a walk down the beach to see the penguins by the pier and admire the city skyline. On your way back you stop at Woolies for groceries and cry at the thought of paying over $10 for three bloody capsicums (they’re called peppers to the rest of the world). You walk into the hostel kitchen to make your food but there’s no room to cook since half of the hobs don’t work. Not to mention you’d also have to clean everything before you use it because apparently no one has been taught how to wash a saucepan before. Since there’s also no room in the fridge or cupboards to store your food, you go to put it in your room (at least the cockroaches can’t get it there). Suddenly you panic because you can’t find your key card, then you remember that it’s on an app. Finally a useful app! Eventually you say f*** it, let’s get a McDonald’s. On the out the door you stop at reception and say “I’d like to extend my stay please…” You’re glad you booked Base St Kilda.
Response from Property: This has got to be one of the best reviews we've had in a while. Happy you had a great stay!

A lot of the reviews put this as a social hostel but I don't think this was the case. I stayed in a 6-bed shared dorm with bathroom and most of the people in the room were workers/long term guests (They had been there for 3+ months). It felt like I was living in their house and I didn't feel very welcome. It also meant that it was very messy and so couldn't be cleaned thoroughly. The bathroom was also very dirty and there was mould on the ceiling.

Only positive was the location, decently comfy beds, and good sized lockers. A lot of the staff were unfriendly, and the party culture made it so empty during the day. The shower was either freezing cold or lukewarm. Incredibly noisy place to stay - even on the third floor you can hear everything until 1am, including people shouting in the hallways. Breakfast was awful. Alright if you literally only want a party, but otherwise go elsewhere.

Nicole and Keri made the experience lush and food was to die for only complaint is that they are leaving us and it really makes me want to cry but we have to look at the positives in life not the negatives so 10/10 experience and 20/10 for looks

My sister and I had the best time at Base St Kilda! It’s an extremely sociable hostel and we met some of our best friends here that we have continued to meet up the east coast! (The bingo is a must do!) While we had some a minor issue with our booking for an excursion with Happy Travels, it was resolved and we are super grateful for the both teams for accomodating and helping us sort it all out! Highly recommend staying here, especially if you’re solo and want to find some friends for life! Thank you Base!
Response from Property: Amazing review - Thanks Victoria. Very happy to hear any minor issue's were resolved promptly and that Bingo was a highlight of your stay. Monday is the best day of the week for that very reason!! Safe Travels :)

Such a good hostel and I highly recommend it for social purposes but PLEASE DONT book through their partners Happy Travels who sit at the reception to book your plans. We booked our entire trip on our own and decided to book Fraser Island and Noosa through them as we did it with some friends and we’re told it would be ‘easier’. Upon arrival to Noosa our organiser from Happy Travels Chris had messed up the booking meaning we were left homeless for a night before Fraser Island. Having spoken to many other people, a lot of people have said that their plans have been incorrectly organised by Happy Travels and they’ve been left in worrying situations too. When we called Base at St Kilda to help us with our Happy Travels booking they were totally unapologetic and said it’s not their fault. Please don’t book with them! While you might think they’ll make your trip easier they make it a lot worse and will in fact just take your money.
