Stayed here after choosing carefully from other hotels offered - a treat from our Son. We arrived to a rather stilted reception from the girl on reception. We were given our room that overlooked par of the car park and part of the canal. Room was ok - a little dated but comfortable. Changed and went to the bar to get a drink and sit outside - nice area - drinks fairly reasonable in price. We had booked a meal in the orangery that evening and were enjoyed it immensely. The young serving staff were polite and friendly and we didn’t have to wait too long between courses. One of the staff discussed wine options - really nice guy. We opted for the bread starter which was lovely with a mushroom veloute. Our main course we opted for steak and both were cooked to our preference. We thought the main course had enough on our plate to fill us up nicely. Dessert - we opted for an Eton mess cocktail. Absolutely gorgeous and can highly recommend and at £9.50 for hotel prices - we found this really reasonable. We went to the bar which was a little busy. Staff were a mixture of grumpy and friendly - not keen on hearing a bit of cattiness between staff in various areas - some staff not really professional. Retired to bed to find my lamp next to bed didn’t work at all. Breakfast next day - lovely but we had to wait for our toast and coffee and tea for some time - others that were with a wedding party were served before us. This was a let down as the breakfast was lovely but we ended up eating toast and having hot drink after we had eaten our cooked breakfast. (Which by then was lukewarm as we had waited for toast and hot drinks) Went for a stroll - came back in and through reception to the same aloof girl who had greeted us the previous day - still aloof. We packed and checked out. We were not asked how our stay was,nor offered a safe journey etc - common courtesies that were have had in practically every other hotel that we’ve been to. It’s because of the frosty reception, the cattiness of some staff, the wait at breakfast and the room in general with tired decor and appliances that I have given it 3 stars. The saving grace was the waiting staff in the restaurant at night who deserve a mention as professional, friendly and a credit to the hotel. Maybe other staff can learn from their youth.
