I visited on Thursday 24th October. Stourhead was quite busy as was the courtyard outside of the spread Eagle Inn Positives We were able to get a table inside Negatives Bar staff rather dismissive No vegetarian sandwiches on the menu although cheese and pickle offered when I enquired. It was awful. Tasteless sliced brown “not wholemeal” bread, Truly awful processed cheese slice (I didn’t know places still used them) Carrot and coriander soup so diluted it could have been water. 10% service charge quietly added to the bill. As if that all wasn’t bad enough, I was chased into the courtyard by one of the staff accusing me of not paying. I explained how and when I had paid and she replied “ok I believe you” like she didn’t!

My son proposed to his girlfriend in the garden and planned a surprise for her by getting the families together at the hotel. We had to make sure she didn't see us. The staff were all so helpful and we were looked after by Julie and Katie as well as the restaurant staff. Food was lovely and the surrounding area is spectacular.

We were greeted with a very warm welcome and taken to a table in the dining room where we received excellent service. We all chose the mediterranean vegetable tart served with chunky chips and a salad, the tart was very tasty with a good herb pastry case. The drinks menu had a great selection of soft drinks. We all thoroughly enjoyed our impromptu visit and would definitely eat at the Inn again.

Charming place. Friendly staff. If you sit at the table to the right of the door as you enter, and then look carefully at the glass panels on the window, you'll see where David Niven and his wife scratched their names with a diamond ring in 1941.

Lovely staff, disappointed with the roast lunch, the chicken was very chewy for two out of three guests and didn't appear to have been roasted. The room was large and the bed was 10 out of 10 for comfort, although the room was very dusty. Overall, it is a lovely location and beautiful grounds.

We booked our stay a while ago, and the Spread Eagle sent me instructions how to access the building in case I was arriving late. In the end we arrived early, and were shown to our room by Harmony who is a very organised manager, so we could unpack, as we had decided to walk the lake whilst the weather was good. The location of the Spread Eagle is terrific as the lake (photos will accompany) is 1 minute away, and a better start or finish to the day I cannot imagine. We filled out our breakfast requirements and left it at the front desk, and went out to walk the grounds and lake. The bed was very comfortable and although the water in the bathroom was slow in coming out, it was a delight to stay, and breakfast was hot and delicious and again Harmony was there to ensure we were happy.

This lovely inn, set within beautiful Stourhead gardens, was an absolute stand out stay for us. The location is a winner to begin with but the inn was so personal and cosy, mainly due to the staff. I have to mention Christine in particular, who is the most wonderful person and made us feel so special. She is funny and engaging, and delivers fast service with a big smile. She remembered all our names, how we were linked (as family and friends) and wasn't above a little bit of teasing - which was very funny. She never over-stepped the mark or misinterpreted our signals and needs. A really wonderful lady and a real asset to the pub. I must also mention Ben and Harmony who were also both very efficient and very nice and made our stay special. The bedrooms are lovely and the choice of teas, coffees and biscuits in the rooms was a bonus. The food was excellent. Great quality and very nicely cooked and presented. Breakfasts were very good as well, with two rooms available to use. The courtyard area outside was a very pleasant place to sit in the sun, with lots of tables, an art gallery and an ice cream/coffee stall as well. All in all, a tranquil setting with so much going for it. We will be returning at another time of the year to see how the beautiful gardens have changed with the seasons. Thank you Spread Eagle :-)

The staff and the location are wonderful. Our main hostess, Christine, was exceptional and went out of her way to look after our group of 6. The rooms were nice but not top class. They looked like they could do with an update. The bed in particular was old and creaky. The bathroom was not modern. The dinner I had was very nice, acceptable for the price. We had the cooked breakfast which was excellent. One of the main benefits was that guests are allowed to walk around Stourhead gardens at any time, so we able to beat the crowds, which was great.

Wow what an incredible stay. A group of six of us (three couples) stayed for two nights on 27/28 April 2023. We’ve stayed at many places around the UK but never been treated so well by Christine and the staff there. From the moment we checked in until the moment we left nothing was too much trouble for her. I’m fact on the day we left it was her day off but she even popped by at breakfast to say goodbye. Incredible. Everywhere was really clean and the food excellent. The bedrooms are not like a 5 star hotel but very comfy and clean and being in the middle of nowhere so quiet you can hear yourself think! I can’t understand how there can be bad reviews about this place. So if you are thinking of visiting Stourhead House and Gardens or even a short break away in the country this is the place to stay. Can’t recommend it highly enough.
