We spent a couple of nights at the Hotel Towadaso on our latest trip to Japan and found it to be a decent base for visiting the area. It is quite a big hotel and caters to the numerous bus tours that roll through the area, so it has a bit of a mass tourism feel to it which we didn’t like. The location is OK, just a 5-minute walk to the lake front, however not a very inspiring location. The hotel was clean and well-presented, ****s under control, but with an air of faded grandeur. The reception staff were all good, very helpful and spoke a little bit of English. Our Japanese style room was lovely, very large and airy, with plenty of areas for storage and room to spread out (but drastically lacking hooks to hang things on. Our futon bed was comfortable and we had a good night’s sleep. The room was clean and well-maintained. The walls however are a bit thin, so you are able to hear your neighbors engaged in conversation, and also a bit of noise from the hallway. There is a number of restaurants on site. The one we ate our dinners at wasn’t all that great. The food was quite bland and tasteless and not much that was even recognizable. Luckily we had some extra food with us to supplement with. The breakfast, on the other hand, was quite good, but you eat it in this massive industrial type cafeteria that is obviously geared up for the mass bus tours. Good food, zero ambience. The hotel wifi was intermittent, almost unusable in the evenings, so we just switched to 4G data. So overall, not a bad experience, but we’d probably look for something else if we were to stay in the area again.

A long-established ryokan in Oyu Hot Spring in Kazuno City, Akita Prefecture, which has a history of 800 years, and has multiple sources of hot spring water within the building. You can enjoy delicious cuisine while gazing at the magnificent garden created by the previous founder of the ryokan about 100 years ago as a place to retire for pleasure. Nearby are the ruins of a large stone circle dating back 4,000 years (late Jomon Period), which is designated as a special national historic site, and an exhibition museum.

Traveling alone in Michinoku, the hotel on the second day. The parking lot is wide and easy to park. The reception is smooth and the response is very good. The lobby is large and comfortable. The room is on the top floor and has a good view and is well cleaned. On this day, the baths will be crowded from 20:00 to 21:00 because it overlaps with the school trip of junior high school students, so I went to the hot spring at around 18:00. Indoor bath, open-air bath and sauna. I feel happy that I can have it all to myself. The sauna is about 90 degrees and is right after the water bath. Unfortunately, there are no comfortable chairs. Find the right rock around the open-air bath and find a place to set it up. Wander while listening to the chirping of the hototogisu. The hot spring here is odorless unlike yesterday's Sukayu Onsen. But the hot springs are really nice. The entire bathhouse is well-cleaned. There is hydrogen water at the entrance, but if possible, it would be nice to have it in the dressing room so that you can rehydrate in the middle of the sauna. Smoking room is on the 1st floor. There was no breakfast or dinner this time, so it was a hotel where I would like to enjoy cooking next time. Also, it would be nice to have morning coffee in the lobby, but it would be nice to be able to carry it around. Thank you.

I stayed here on a tour organized by JR East Japan View. The room was clean and well-cleaned, which was a good point. I wanted a humidifier, so I called the front desk, but they didn't answer even when I called the Minami-kai, so I went to the front desk. The first explanation was that the air purifier in the room also doubled as a humidifier. So I went back to the room and checked, but it doesn't seem to have that function. I contacted the front desk again and the humidifier arrived. Even though it's April, it's still cold, so I use the air conditioning. I thought this response was a bit unacceptable. I also asked to borrow an extension cord to charge my cell phone, earphones, and smartwatch, but they lent me one, but they said they didn't have anything else. There were only four outlets in the room, including the bathroom, and considering that electronic devices need to be charged in modern times, I think the facilities are insufficient. The hotel is advertised as an auberge, but the meals provided on the tour were fixed, and I feel that it is presumptuous to call it an auberge, both in terms of ingredients and taste. Looking at other people's reviews, it seems to have a high rating, but the only reason I gave it a high rating was the cleanliness of the room. Therefore, the total score is 2. I don't think I will use it again.
Kuchikomi Overall Rating 4.4 (as of 1/18). Special winter plan available!

Very nice ryokan in Gonohe. I used this place as a place to stay between Osorezan and Lake Towada. Towels not included, ¥160 which is odd for an onsen ryokan.
Try the horse sashimi!

On March 7th and 8th, I visited Towada City for my daughter's graduation ceremony. I was also moving, so I stayed there for two nights to be present at the termination of the apartment contract I had been on for three years. The first night was a little luxurious, so I stayed at Oirase Onsen to celebrate graduation. Then on the second night, I stayed at Pony Onsen. It was reasonably priced, close to town, and had the best hot spring water quality. The lights were a little dim in the onsen reserved for guests, but it didn't feel like a hot spring in the city, which was great. If you're looking for an inn in Towada City, I recommend Pony Onsen.
