Despite arriving a good few hours prior to check in, Mario welcomed us in like we were old friends. He let us store our luggage, and insisted that we have some tea and cake whilst we planned how to pass a few hours in Tavira and our room was made ready. Mario was also helpful in advising where to eat and visit both in Tavira and in the Algarve region generally. The exterior of the building itself is well maintained but relatively unassuming from the outside. However, that big red door hides a beautiful traditional stone staircase which wouldn’t be out of place in an aristocratic Portuguese period drama. The staircase leads to intimate surroundings and a well-balanced interior, mixing the traditional and rustic with a modern edge. Nestled at the back of the property is a picturesque patio which doubles as a sun trap with small plunge pool and orange trees. We stayed in the 'Alagoa' suite which was clean, spacious, and beautifully decorated with traditional blankets and rugs, making it feel homely and welcoming. The walk-in shower is the biggest I’ve had the pleasure of using. There’s complimentary shampoo, body wash, and conditioner for use together with hand soap, hand lotion, mosquito repellent, and cotton pads and buds. The bed and pillows were extremely comfy. The room also had air con, a fridge, tea making facilities, and more complimentary cake. Storage is discrete yet plentiful and practical. The wi-fi is great. We didn’t use the TV. The hotel is conveniently located with the local bars and restaurants only a short walk away, yet it is nice and quiet during the night. My partner was kindly gifted a bottle of sparkling wine to celebrate his birthday which was a lovely touch and only served to emphasise just how hospitable the staff who run the hotel are. We both slept well, and the following morning we enjoyed a fulfilling and high-quality buffet style breakfast with eggs made to order. My partner and I would not hesitate to recommend the hotel to any couples looking to stay in Tavira, and would happily book it again for a long weekend. Thank you Mario!

The Sao Paulo is a lovely, intimate hotel in a traditional building, tastefully furnished & decorated. The room was comfortable and well appointed, the host & staff were so welcoming we felt very much at home. The hotel has a courtyard patio with a small plunge pool which was a perfect place to relax and cool off. Breakfast was freshly prepared & delicious. We wish we had booked at least another couple of nights and would love to return.

Rented a car and drove from Lisbon to Algarve and around and around! Drove into Tavira and called hotel and they had a room available. Provided email and they proceeded to offer a wealth of information since I was driving regarding neighboring small cities and things to do. The room was very comfortable, great AC and it was hot and Wi-Fi worked great! Would love to return one day

This small hotel was the perfect place to stay in Tavira. We were warmly welcomed by Mario and Monica and directed to an area with free on street parking. It's a nicely updated old building on a quiet plaza, a short walk across the river to the main part of town. Our room was very comfortable, with lots of interesting art on the walls and a gigantic shower, unusual for Europe. We had dinner at a fantastic tapas restaurant a couple doors down, No de Gosto, which the hotel had reserved for us in advance. Breakfast was a beautiful buffet of fruit, meat, cheeses and cakes, out on the lovely patio. Service during our entire stay was gracious and friendly. Monica was particularly charming. We would highly recommend this hotel!

What a lovely little place, excellent location, wonderful staff, sumptuous breakfast and a true boutique hotel. If you need to stay in Tavira then this place has it all and if we are back in the area (which we very much hope we will be) we will certainly be staying at the Sao Paolo.

Wonderful stay in this lovely intimate and central little hotel. Hosts very helpful, Monica, Mario and Carla very friendly. Breakfast was delicious and having it in the courtyard was a treat for the senses. I would go back if I was visiting this region again.

This hotel is everything you want from a small boutique hotel and more! Service is warm and friendly. The hotel is beautifully designed. The breakfasts were decadent and we felt spoiled. And the location can’t be beat— walking distance to everything and church bells are part of the charm. We will be back ❤️

We stayed in this small boutique hotel for a couple of nights after travelling down from Lisbon. On arrival we were greeted by Carla who offered us coffee and refreshing Pedras mineral water while we checked in - a really nice touch. The hotel interior is incredibly stylish, with beautiful framed artwork throughout. At every turn we were surprised and delighted by a new work of art or a stunning original feature of the building. Carla spent time showing us a map to tell us about the different things we might like to do in Tavira. Our room was a lovely double overlooking the square with a comfortable bed, plenty of storage, TV and a nice bathroom with a double shower. The breakfast presentation is exquisite, with yogurt and granola, local sliced meats and cheeses and breads for toasting. They even bake delicious Portuguese cakes every day and these were truly outstanding. The sliced fruits are laid out on beautiful crockery like works of art, to which we helped ourselves with silver tongs. Breakfast is served in the beautiful courtyard garden at the back of the hotel where we ate and drank from fine china. The salt water plunge pool is a delightful backdrop to breakfast and also really welcome on those plentiful hot and sunny afternoons when you need to cool off. This hotel and it’s wonderful staff manage to strike the perfect balance between luxury and homeliness. We will certainly be back for another visit!
