Communal Hotel Telavi

The room was as cute as the pictures indicated. Unfortunately, there were two problems with our stay. First, out bathroom smelled terrible - like a sewer. After a shower it smelled better, but an hour later it smelled terrible again. But much, much worse than that was the noise. The balcony was effectively unusable. Between the loud and near constant hum of the A/C unit, the smell of exhaust from cars going by on the narrow, fairly busy street, and the incessant barking of dogs, sitting on the balcony was an altogether unpleasant activity. Still, I reasoned, dogs have to sleep just like the rest of us... Not so, it turns out. We were kept awake nearly the entire night by barking dogs (and more than one driver who thoughtlessly drove down the street after midnight with the radio blaring). Three street dogs live on the street directly in front of the hotel, and another pack was down about a block, and they set each other off all night long. I think I finally managed to drift off around 2am, but was awoken at 6am by... barking dogs. Please note that we are animal lovers and that I travel with a white noise machine, but even with the machine on the loudest setting, I couldn't even begin to drown out these dogs. I felt like Elaine on Seinfeld. Perhaps a room at Communal Telavi that is NOT facing the main street would be ok (bathroom smell notwithstanding), but I do not recommend a balcony room.

This place was designed with such a taste. The rooms showcase the best you can find in the region. Breakfast is also a display of the best food in the area. The pool area is a bit small but it is very pleasant. The only minor is that the pool tiles are brown which give the false impression that the water is muddy or dirty. Highly recommend this place. The hotel is walking distance from the museum and other restaurants and cafes in town.

This should have had a five star rating as the hotel is one of the best boutiques we've found in Georgia. Quirky decor, comfy beds, great bed linen, excellent shower, a very decent hairdryer, and warm and friendly reception staff. However, sadly, the restaurant staff lets it down. The main waitress was arrogant and unfriendly. She initially said she didn't have a table, even though it wasn't full. When we pushed, and said we were staying at the hotel, and pointed out two empty tables, she reluctantly agreed. Food was great, but she had an attitude. Such a shame as all other members of the hotel team were excellent and showed the usual warm Georgian hospitality that we've experienced throughout our two week tour.
