Cleaning could be a little better in the rooms and along with the general bathroom cleaning you would think would happen..

Beautiful building. Rooms nice but has to be remembered it's an old building so no air con or double glazing. Apparently resident ghost included tho we never saw him! Food is excellent value and the staff all so friendly and helpful, especially Jesse. We stayed during the Tewksbury Music Festival which is well worth a visit itself, so was a busy time, but nothing was too much trouble. Will be back.

The shower was difficult to control, ranging from cold to blisteringly hot. Clearly the system needs a TMV. The shower over a traditional curved bottom bath was dangerous and uncomfortable. The room was hot and some of the windows didn't open properly At dinner the risotto was not right and the rice was unpleasant. The rice was not fully cooked and was very grainy. It did not appear to be risotto rice, ie Arborio. When we complained the waitress said, 'what would you like me to do about it'. We said we would like proper cooked risotto rice. She said she would see the chef. She returned saying, chef says he doesn't have any more rice. When we complained to a more senior member of staff the response was, 'That's how it comes'. We had asked for a bottle of wine. The waitress bought the wine over but couldn't open it as she said she'd get a senior member of staff, as it had a cork in it. She took the bottle away. The senior member of staff appeared with the opened bottle and placed it on the table. She had drawn the cork through the foil wrap, leaving the foil top in tatters around the opening. She did not offer us to taste the wine. When I complained that that was not the proper way to open a bottle of wine and serve it, her response was, 'That's how we do it here'. Whilst ultimately we weren't charged for the food, we would very much have preferred a decent meal with good service. An unpleasant experience. We shall not return to the Bell.

The hotel was covered in scaffolding when we arrived but we received a warm welcome at the start of our 4 day stay. The room was modest with TV and coffee maker, but without the trimmings (bottles of shampoo, soap, tissues etc) but still good value for the price. They gave us a 20% discount for each night we ate in the restaurant so we enjoyed good food, served piping hot and good portions. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The breakfasts were excellent with full English plus fruit, cereals etc, included in our package. The hotel has roots back several hundred years so to get to our room we went along lots of short corridors, up and down steps, round corners, through several doors, which made it seem like a mile, when in fact it was about 100 steps. As we walked along the cooridors and in our room , every floorboard creaked and squeeked making a bit of noise when moving around at night. This is part of the character of the old building so no real problems. In all, a great stay, good food and service and well worth another visit. Good location too. at the end of the high street.
