The location is great, right next to the Gunbarrel Chairlift, ticket office and ski hire. I first stayed here for a weekend in 1997, not long after the River Inn opened. I'll be kind and just say it hasn't improved with age. Aside from the building's shortcomings, the rooms are dull, dated and very small. The bathroom, however, was functional and there was plenty of hot water. The place is well overdue for a renovation, or preferably a demolition and rebuild, to a standard that is appropriate for its intended use as a hotel. The building itself is a flimsy construction of timber and plasterboard which creaks and groans with every footstep in the residential corridors. It is also an acoustic sound box - amplifying every voice, step, bump or any other noise. The aforementioned flimsy construction's coup de grace, is the sound transparency of the walls, ceiling and floor. Wafer or paper thin is the kindest description. I could clearly hear the bloke next door, talking on his phone, in a normal voice, as if he was sitting on the edge of my bed. There also appeared to be large gaps under each room's door. This not only channels noise from outside, into your room, but probably also contravenes fire regulations. The net result of this is that you won't get a decent rest. If you value your sleep, this building is best avoided. We also had the misfortune to have to share the place with a dozen or so members of the UTS ski club, who thought it was a great idea to scream and yell about the corridors for most of the night and party on. Exactly what you don't need, given the other shortcomings of the place. I can't fault the staff, who did their best to welcome the guests and provide bar and food service. The food was just OK, with plenty of what you expect at breakfast, but the cleanliness of the plates and cutlery wasn't. The cutlery was greasy. Other strange issues with the River Inn, include the mezzanine loft in the middle of the dining room being used as a staff dormitory. Weird and dodgy. Overall, you pay a very large amount for the location, but the rest of the experience doesn't measure up. I'm sure there are much better places close by.
