Had an excellent break at Casuarina. We had been there for the 4th time. The room given to us as spacious, clean, mini bar, clean towels and comfortable bed. There was a wide variety of food as I was forbidden to have sea food. Yet I had a variety of choices. The desserts fruits salad etc were all good. The service from the bar, the restaurant, room service all meet the level of a four star. We felt much at home. Will surely recommend Casuarina for a budgeted break.

Having arrived at 8am we were not able to check into our room until 2 pm and in the intervening period we’re not given any option but to wait in reception amongst the comings and goings of the hotel. Not ideal as we had travelled long haul. The “all inclusive” does not commence until 2 pm and there is no concession for early arrivals, who have no choice in their time of arrival. I feel the hotel should do more to acknowledge this and accommodate it. When we did get our room it was not the “upgraded sea view” our booking stated but at the back of the complex near an affiliated development called “The Essence”, which is still under construction. The Essence is marketed as having access to the Casuarina facilities and given also Le Cardinal (an “exclusive” resort next door also has use of the Casuarina facilities, along with large group visiting Mauritian weekend visitors, and even a 20 plus all day school visit it has to be questioned whether The Casuarina has adequate facilities with all these additional users - during our visit The Casuarina itself was under occupied so it didn’t affect our particular stay. The hotel changed our room to a sea view (without issue) when we challenged the room they offered us. The hotel has a strong French presence and is specifically geared towards catering for French tourists with their own animation team and often quite noisy sound systems - from which there is no escaping if using the bar. This was not the environment we were expecting. We felt we were at a European holiday camp rather than a long haul exotic destination. Perhaps this is more the fault of how the resort is marketed in the UK. I sense the resort is used widely by French package holiday tourists, with often large groups and sometimes late raucous (but good natured) singing and chanting and guests throwing each other in the pool at gone midnight. It can be noisy and some non-British guests can get boisterous. Everyone was always good natured but if I wanted noise and cheesy entertainment I would have gone to Costa Del Sol and not a 12 hour flight from home. Again I think this is a failure of UK holiday marketing and not a fault of the resort. We upgraded the 20 minute free jet lag massage to a full 60 minute treatment. The spa is an oasis of calm with a sauna and plunge pool - highly recommend giving it a try. We had reason to challenge the restaurant staff over an accidental drink spillage by another guest, in that it was being ignored and clearly a slip hazard in an area with high foot fall. The restaurant staff had a “not my job to clear it up mentality” …. it was the cleaners job, a view upheld by the restaurant floor supervisor (who seemed to do all the bossing around). A senior hotel manager observed this and she went out of her way to approach me the following day to express she was not happy with the way their staff dealt with the situation or how I was spoken to, and that some staff were having their conduct addressed. This went a lon

Having read a fair number of reviews it gives a balanced idea of expectations. Beautiful and comfortable hotel and grounds with attentive staff and good food. However, having experienced a couple of managerial issues we will now look closely at reviews before booking future hotels. This is constructive feedback. Our biggest negative is this complex takes day bookings of school children for swim parties.!?!? We were invaded by a large group of very noisy children which made us leave the hotel for the day. This being a day off between our booked excursions, we were expecting to relax by the pool so it was really inconvenient. Had we been pre-warned, we would have organised something else for that day and had we been out for the day it wouldn’t have had an impact. It was deafeningly noisy and far too busy. The booking in after 2pm when you land at 7.30 am is really difficult. We had to wait until exactly 2pm, we were so exhausted, there was nowhere to comfortably/quietly rest. As a long haul destination for us, we had spent over 24 hours plus the time difference awake which took us some time to recover from as older people. A very unpleasant start to our holiday. I have not experienced this before and will not be doing this again. The hotels All inclusive is very restrictive, despite us having a number of days away from resort, missing in total around 14+ meals (our choice) but it seems very mean by management that on the first/last day there is a definitive start/end to All Inclusive. So whilst you are waiting for your room to become available no lunch/beverages unless you want to pay? Maybe this is due to all the very large Mauritian family groups that stay for just a few days. Perhaps management should look at a concession for longer staying holidaymakers? For guests with mobility issues, there are lots of ‘trip hazards’ in the hotel main traffic areas, with patios having small gullies filled with stones to drain water and a number of small steps that are not very clearly highlighted with the patterned floor tiles. I was very mindful of this having some slight mobility issues. Indeed we also saw staff members tripping and falling because of this and they should certainly be more used to moving around the complex. Having travelled extensively, staying in many hotels, I have never come across any of these issues previously but will most definitely look out for them in future reviews to avoid booking this type of hotel, as I would through choice, not want to experience this again. This is an expensive long haul destination for us Brits and our expectations were for something more than a ‘euro camp’ type holiday experience with roudy large groups of partying and ‘chanting’ holidaymakers late into the night and large local family groups around the pool during the day. I can stay in Europe for that type of holiday. Lovely place, just picked the wrong hotel for a relaxing experience.

The Casuarina met all our expectations. We had done our research so knew this hotel wasn't a 5* luxury hotel - but we didn't pay 5* prices! It gave us everything we wanted, alongside a fantastic beach. The hotel is clean and the rooms are a decent size. Yes, our bathroom was dated but that didn't change our holiday experience. We had hot showers, and the room was cleaned daily. Towels swapped every day if you wanted. The fridge had soft drinks in it. Housekeeping responded when I asked for extra pillows. We thought the food was excellent. We always found something that we liked and the restaurant staff were helpful. The bar staff were attentive and friendly. We loved sitting around the bar. The music could be too loud in the evening which stopped you having a conversation and we had to move away from that area if we wanted to talk but it didn't spoil our holiday! We met some really great people at this hotel, people that enjoyed the hotel and the island as much as us. We could have easily stayed longer, 10 nights wasn't long enough! Lyn, Tony, Ian, and Vicky, - really enjoyed our chats, felt like we'd known you so much longer than 10 nights! Louisa and Colin, alot of laughs on the 5 islands trip after Vijay teamed us up in the taxi to reduce the price! Still waiting for the dolphin video,Louisa! Stephan and Crystal, you entertained us for hours with your diving stories! The beach is over the road from the hotel, with plenty of sunbeds. Non motorized water sports are available here that are free. As previous people have mentioned, water shoes are advisable. The small stones at the waters edge can be painful but the beach is fabulous, you can walk in both directions. Vijay operates from this beach and we can recommend him. We took 2 boat trips with him and both were well organised and very reasonable prices. The 5 islands tour is the best in my opinion. One day we used a guide who took us around the places we wanted to see on the island. Best option for us as we got to travel through streets that we wouldn't have found ourselves! The spa was very good value for money. We travelled with Blue Bay and got discount on the treatments as part of our package. Can recommend this travel agent, we'd travel with them anywhere! I can honestly say this holiday gave us everything we wanted and more. We'd go back to Mauritius in a heartbeat and happily stay in this hotel again as all the people we met agreed.
