Refugios Salkantay

We completed the four day trek with this wonderful company/ family. They made it possible for us to hike the salkantay trek with an 8 and 10 year old. The set up of the third day with a hot springs visit on the morning of the third day and “only” a three hour mostly up hill hike in afternoon is great for young family. The team were attentive and we had the option of using horses if necessary. Food was good and they were especially keen to make sure kids had food they would like. The lodges are great. Refugios salkantay provided an amazing hiking experience. Everything was coordinated beautifully, food was great and accommodations were excellent. It was the best way to experience the beauty of Peru and be exposed to the culture in a way a typical trip would not.

Keep in mind that you are looking at a service for a hike/stay in the middle of the mountains, at over 4000m high. With this in mind, Refugios Salkantay are an absolute delight, and again, when considering the conditions of the environment, I'll confidently say they offer luxury. You have an entire team of dedicated cooks, porters, drivers, and coordinators who cater to your needs and ensure you're well taken care of and are enjoying your trip, all while immersing you in their customs and day-to-day activities. It is an amazing service run by people with big hearts, who work closely with local families instead of commercializing everything as a touristic service. What's more, Refugios Salkantay offers the option of independent trekking, namely that you'll benefit from accommodations, food & water supplies, luggage transport, while being able to trek without a guide. This is an excellent option for more experienced backpackers who want to follow their own pace and have more freedom in their schedule. Overall, Refugios Salkantay have been wonderful for everyone in our group. Highly recommend!! ***Small note about some comments on food poisoning:

Four of us did the full service Salkantay Trek with Refugios Salkantay. They responded quickly and with lots of details to all our enquiries before we got to Perú and we felt super comfortable with them from the moment we met them at the briefing the day before the trek started. They did update us about a change of plan because of some mud slides that had ruined parts of the road. Initially, they told us we would need to carry all our bags in one segment of 10 kilometers ( about 6 mile) which stressed us out because we are all in our 50s and 60s and not accustomed to carrying heavy equipment while hiking. However, when they saw it was stressful for us they went into problem solving mode with us, trying to do whatever they could to come up with a solution. They ended up hiring a porter to carry the luggage for us. At the briefing, we met Yjeguel who would be our guide for the next 5 days. He turned out to be amazing! Throughout the hike he took very good care of us. He was super friendly, very knowledgeable, spoke very good English, he was full of excitement despite having done the trek hundreds of times before and he provided everything we needed. We all bonded with him and were very sad and emotional when we had to say goodbye at the end. The food was simple but very tasty and made with care in all the places where we ate. The accommodations were mostly modest but clean and comfortable and provided everything we needed.  One thing we really liked about the experience was that it was a family run company, not a corporate cookie cutter experience, and the people running the experience were warm, kind, and generous. For example, one of us lost a pair of prescription glasses at the lodge on the first night and they sent for it to wait for us back in Cusco. I would definitely recommend Refugios Salkantay to whoever is interested in a challenging but beautiful and memorable adventure.

We went on the 4D3N trek with refugios salkantay and had a wonderful experience. We stayed with two lovely families who were friendly and supportive throughout the hikes. Food was healthy and tasty at each location, and everything was planned and layed out well for us even as an independent non-guided hike. Support was also provided via transport of excess clothes or resources we did not want to carry in our pack to each location we stayed. The hikes themselves were of course beautiful and enjoyable going through the Salkantay trail. Overall, would highly recommend booking your visit to Machu Piccu with refugios salkantay.
