Higher Buck Inn

Ate here last night for our wedding anniversary. The food and service was excellent.The sauce with my mussel starter was so tasty and the flavours on my wife’s starter was amazing. My venison main course was beautifully presented and tasted great and my wife’s plaice was delicate and delicious. Our first visit but won’t be our last after a fabulous night.

We loved it, but would like to suggest a few things. Our room was situated in between the house keeping cupboard and another room. This did wake us up on a couple of occasions, In addition the slamming of doors, which we purely put down to the doors being quite heavy and other guests not bearing this in mind, so not as peaceful as it could’ve been. These things wouldn’t completely deter us from returning. The rooms are lovely, the staff and the food are wonderful.

Another wonderful lunch thanks to Rebekah, Gayle and a very accommodating chef. The mackerel starter not only looked beautiful but tasted great. The lamb main was simple exquisite. Their daily specials board is always varied and always top notch/nosh. Thank you.

We had an excellent meal at the Higher Buck. The food was wonderful, and the service was exceptional. We tested the patience of the staff, by being extremely disorganised and we do apologise for numerous last minute changes to arrangements. This was handled very graciously and professionally by the excellent manager and brilliant serving staff. We recommend the Higher Buck very highly. Great food, a lovely atmosphere, plus kind, professional service.

Lovely one night stay. Friendly staff, well appointed large rooms ( very comfy beds) and great food, evening and especially breakfast. It's in a lovely village, excellent walking nearby. Will be returning.

Staff couldn't be more helpful from assisting with a muddy dog to service with a smile both at dinner and breakfast our stay was excellent from start to finish. The evening menu had multiple choices, always a bonus and everything we had was delicious, this included breakfast which was cooked to perfection. Our room was large, clean and spacious. Already talking about returning.

The food was excellent and a little bit different. There was still traditional food all home made an exceptional. The wine menu is great also. The ambiance is cosy. The staff were friendly helpful and attentive

stopped off here didnt book very attentive staff could fit us in. the food was amazing not like me to clear my plate cheese souffle to start just melted in my mouth lamb rump was out of this world great selection of specials my partner said if he could lick the plate then he would very friendly place even though we hadnt booked on a sat night we wasnt rushed and a very enjoyable visit what a little gem this place is will defo be back

My wife and we’re staying at the Washington Arms which is 200 yards down the road from the higher Buck. We went in for a couple of late afternoon drinks and had a lovely experience ! We were made very welcome and shown to a small table aside the bar as we were only having drink, which was fine. The staff were all excellent, well mannered and had smiles on there faces so we enjoyed our couple of pre dinner drinks prior to having our pre booked evening meal back at the Waddington arms. We enjoyed a fantastic meal and then thought we would walk out and go back to the higher Buck for a few drinks to finish off our night prior to returning to the Waddington Arms for our night cap as residents. As we approached the higher Buck I notice that the front door had been pulled to but I could see a few people inside so opened the door to go in. I must point out that it was 9.40pm. As I walked to the bar there was a couple of staff doing what looked like “ tilling up “ and I asked if we could still order drinks. I was very surprised to be told “No, we’re stopped serving now” So we went back to the Waddington Arms who were happy to serve us and the place was still quite full. What pub/ hotel do you know that closes and refuses to serve drinks at 9.40pm on a Saturday night ?????? I don’t know any, well I do now ! If it had been 10.50pm and we’d have walked in for a last drink then may be I could understand it, but 9.40pm on a warm summers Saturday night, NEVER. We only went back there because we enjoyed our pre dinner drinks but I’m sorry now that we did. These places have been shut for months and months due to Covid so you would think they’d be glad for your custom ! Obviously not at The Higher Buck. This is a hotel as well so I assume residents were still being served, or may be they weren’t. So, if you go to Waddington I would highly recommend The Waddington Arms for both quality food, hospitality and a great place to get at drink later than 9.40pm Very disappointing that we had this experience after such a nice late afternoon visit. I’d be interested to see what reply this review get from the owner. Kind Regards Andrew
