The George Inn

When we arrived at this place we were very impressed with the exterior as it’s a very traditional looking building with a thatched roof, even though it was rebuilt in 2010 following a fire. Inside it is characterful, the staff were friendly and helpful and our room was very nice. We ate in the evening and the food was very tasty although the seasonal vegetables were not seasonal.. but that didn’t detract and I didn’t say anything because they were very tasty. The reason we have taken off a star is because it is a little tired in places and the courtyard area was grubby, and damp with broken tables and litter which was unwelcoming upon arrival. Also the bathroom was perfectly adequate with plenty of hot water but the bath panel was corroded and broken. The towel rail was hanging off. But again I must emphasise overall we had a lovely one night stay and we would definitely return.

I wanted to buy a bottle of wine or bubbly for my parents who stayed at The George as a surprise, as they were celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary. It took 8 attempts to get through on the phone, no one answers it or returns messages. Eventually I managed to speak to a staff member on reception, explained my request and paid for the wine, asking if my parents could be told of the surprise. No one told them, and had I not checked with them, my money would have been spent in vain. The lady they spoke to at the bar knew nothing about it. The pub did refund the money to Mum and Dad, but the gesture was spoilt. From the difficulty I had in getting through on the phone I surmise they are understaffed, and the staff who are there seem to care little for ensuring their guests have an enjoyable stay. I won't be frequenting The George myself, and doubt my parents will return.

Very interesting and quirky building.

This hotel is an absolute gem. Superb service from the staff really clean newly refurbished rooms lovely old town. Food was superb with the chef going all out to service. My gluten-free needs. Definitely stop there again a must for anyone

Great old fashioned Inn with clean, well appointed rooms recently redecorated. Beautiful accommodation area with oak staircase. A real gem.

Very friendly lady showed me to the room. Stunning period building with so much character yet still immaculately presented. Would definitely stay again.

Had a great Sunday roast at George! We were served by Fin and Joel who were absolutely lovely and so helpful!! All staff were great to be honest and atmosphere's nice and calm, feels very relaxed:) Definitely recommend for a nice chill meal on Sunday !

Quiet, spaceous room which was very clean. The pub served delicious food and there is a fabulous little cafe next door. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will be back when visiting family again. Exceptional value for money with a good breakfast included. Only slight ****** is that the pillows were thin and not supportive. One is not enough and two is too much. Perhaps they could invest in firmer support pillows and the score for this hidden gem would be 10/10.

Very friendly, lovely comfortable room which was tastefully decorated. I had dinner as well and it was very good value and delicious.
