We were given the key to check into our room, only to find the maid there, flustered. She asked us to return in 20 minutes. Once we checked in, the room looked great but it smelled damp. The smell pervaded. The basin in the bathroom was blocked. The light over the shower flashed; then eventually failed: each time we turned on the bathroom light. The duvet and pillows were so lumpy we were both awake most of the night. Dinner was delicious but we weren't asked if we wanted dessert. When we asked, we were told the kitchen was closed. It took so long for our breakfast to be served the following morning that we had to wrap half of it in a napkin as we had to catch a train. The staff were lovely but the overall, expensive experience was very disappointing. I had booked this for a very special birthday.
