Things to bear in mind when booking this hotel: it's right next door to the zoo so the people staying here are mainly going to be families with young children. Young children are noisy and messy. So it's best to manage your expectations before you book. Having said that, we booked as a couple, out of the school holiday season, when the hotel was fairly quiet. The staff were very friendly, chatty and welcoming. They have big smiles for all the children, even when I suspect their patience is sorely tested! The hotel is unique and quirky, having been built in the middle of a wood. Apparently the vision was to create a sort of African jungle experience. It's not African at all, but the views are lovely and it does create a very special atmosphere. Our room was a superior room which was one of the bigger rooms. There is a balcony of sorts that you can wander out on, but it's shared with all the other rooms on your 'block' so you feel that you are invading their privacy because if the curtains to their patio doors are open, you can see into their rooms. Plus there is no outdoor furniture, so I guess they don't want to encourage people to use it as an actual balcony. The room itself was large and clean, but I agree with the lack of attention to detail by cleaning staff. There was a hair band left on one of the chairs, complete with hairs. I get the feeling that cleaning staff don't have much time to spend on thoroughly checking the rooms and I can imagine that cleaning up after young families, must be a nightmare - so pay them more and give them more time to check each room! Yes the decor is tired, and in some ways that adds to the charm, but when you see stained carpets and seating, plus stains on the walls, it does seem a bit too grubby in places. Again, not surprising when you are catering for young families. Children will spill food and drinks and over the years, this has led to stains that probably won't come out. Overall it could do with some TLC. Even just to deep clean the carpets, a lick of paint in the rooms, anything just to brighten it up a bit. But, we wanted somewhere unusual to stay and we got that. Plus there are some lovely walks in and around the area, including one to a lovely pub in Owslebury. We didn't eat in the restaurant as the menu seemed really limited, but we did have breakfast which was buffet style. I would choose your timing carefully though because it was chaotic at around 8:30am with some families having to wait for tables to become free. In general therefore, we would return but would do so off-season again. It's reasonably priced so you do get what you pay for. With a deep clean this would improve the hotel massively.
