The hotel is uniquely located right along the Gornergrat railway line, about a 3-minute walk from Riffelberg station. Perched on a snowy mountain, it offers stunning views. We were quite lucky during our stay; we saw the Matterhorn on the first day and it snowed on the second, which created a fantastic atmosphere on the mountain. If you're looking for snowscapes or a secluded, unique ambiance, this place comes highly recommended.
The hotel's facilities are reasonably modern. Despite being an old building, the interior has been renovated to some extent, and the rooms are clean and tidy. As for the food, the taste was decent but nothing special, and the selection wasn't as extensive as we'd hoped. Our meal package included two dinners and two breakfasts. Dinner was mainly a buffet plus à la carte options, but the à la carte dishes weren't very diverse and the taste was just so-so. The buffet was standard Western salad bar quality, but it tasted good. Breakfast was typical Continental fare. Don't go in with high expectations for the food.
Regarding the much-advertised spa, we didn't have a great experience this time. The outdoor pool water was too cold and the indoor panoramic sauna was too hot, preventing us from fully enjoying either. We hope the hotel can increase the temperature of the outdoor pool.

The staff were consistently friendly and helpful throughout the stay, always willing to assist when needed.
Upon arriving in Zermatt and taking the Gornergrat Bahn, it is highly recommended to call the hotel in advance so they can arrange luggage pickup at Riffelberg station. Pulling luggage by yourself can be quite challenging, as the path involves walking through snow and crossing ski areas.
One of the highlights of this hotel is the breathtaking and unobstructed view of the Matterhorn. The mountain is clearly visible from the hotel area, and there is truly no need to go elsewhere just to enjoy this iconic view.
The outdoor jacuzzi is a wonderful feature; however, on some days the water temperature was not warm enough, making it comfortable to use only on certain occasions.
Dinner is served as a set course menu. Each evening, there are two main dish options: one meat dish (which changes daily, such as beef, pork, or fish) and one vegetarian option. The food quality is very good and tasty, but the service is relatively slow — completing the full course takes around two hours.
The hotel is well equipped with an elevator that provides access to all floors, which is very convenient, especially when carrying belongings.

The best place ever! From the food to the room, the spa, everything was 10/10. The best view of the Matterhorn. I am so so glad I decided to stay here. Thank you to the team for the excellent service

Location – 10/10
Nestled high above Zermatt, the Riffelhaus 1853 is accessible via the Gornergrat railway, making the journey itself an adventure. Once you arrive, you’re greeted by panoramic mountain views in every direction, with the iconic Matterhorn standing proudly in front of you. The setting is perfect for ski-in/ski-out access in winter and stunning hiking trails in summer.
Rooms – 9/10
The rooms are cozy, modern, and well-equipped while still maintaining a classic Swiss alpine charm. Many rooms come with Matterhorn views, and waking up to this scenery is an experience in itself. The beds are comfortable, and the rustic wooden decor gives a warm, welcoming feel. Some rooms have balconies, which I highly recommend booking for the full experience.
Service – 9/10
The staff is friendly, professional, and attentive. Despite the hotel’s remote location, the service is top-notch, with staff going out of their way to accommodate special requests. From seamless check-in to helpful local recommendations, they make the stay even more special.
Dining – 8.5/10
The on-site restaurant serves delicious Swiss cuisine, including traditional dishes like fondue and rösti. The breakfast is generous, featuring fresh bread, cheeses, meats, and eggs cooked to order. The only downside is that, due to the remote location, dining options are limited to the hotel restaurant, but the quality makes up for it.
Wellness & Spa – 10/10
The outdoor hot tub with a view of the Matterhorn is an absolute highlight! There’s also a sauna and steam bath, perfect after a day of skiing or hiking. Soaking in the warm water while surrounded by snow-capped peaks is an experience worth every penny.
Activities – 10/10
Winter: Perfect for skiing, as the hotel is directly on the slopes. The ski room is convenient, and the access to the Gornergrat ski area is unbeatable.
Summer: Incredible hiking trails with direct access to the Gornergratbahn for easy excursions to higher altitudes.

The hotel is located in Riffelburg. To be honest, the rooms are quite average, about the standard of a three-star hotel in China. The rooms are very clean, and the view of the Matterhorn from the restaurant window is spectacular. Dinner is a four-course meal, but one time the main course took an hour and a half to arrive, so I can't really give it a good review…

The hotel is clean and the staff are friendly. It's close to the train station, but it's a mountain road, so it might be difficult to get there with a large suitcase. The view from the hotel is amazing. The clouds change position quickly. I got up early to see the sunrise and the upside-down Matterhorn. Both dinner and breakfast were delicious. It's a wonderful hotel.

It's inconvenient halfway up the mountain.
No one will be in the lobby after 8pm.
So even if something goes wrong in the middle of the night, no one will care about you. It's very dangerous.
I found out when I arrived at the hotel that I had to pay more because some rooms in the hotel are set up for single occupancy. I had to pay attention to the options when booking a room.
Dinner is small

The hotel is halfway up the mountain. You need to take a small train to go up the mountain. It costs more than 30 Swiss francs per person. If you have bought a ski ticket, you don’t need to buy a small train ticket.
At the station in front of the hotel, you can call someone to pick you up, otherwise it is difficult to walk in the snow with luggage, but people still have to walk to the hotel.
The hotel includes breakfast + dinner. The breakfast is ordinary, and the dinner is different every day. It is very unpalatable on the first day. The second and third days are okay. But it is also a simple dinner. But the scenery is very beautiful and you can see the Matterhorn while eating.
The room is okay, each one is a mountain view room, and the hotel’s sauna and bathing pool are particularly good. You can see the Matterhorn, and it is very beautiful. Most people come here because of this.
The snow trail is at the door, but you can’t slide over to the cable car. You need to carry the skateboard up. Continue to sit up to the blue and red trails. If you slide down, there is only the red trail. But it’s nice to drink champagne at the rest stop on the road.
