At Sayram Lake, nature paints blue in its most perfect shade. 💙🏔️✨

I had seen photos of Sayram Lake before my trip, but I still wasn't prepared for how beautiful it could look in person. The water seemed to stretch endlessly beneath the open sky, with snow-capped mountains in the distance and wide grasslands creating a landscape that felt almost unreal. Located in the Bortala Mongol Autonomous Prefecture in Xinjiang, China, Sayram Lake is one of those destinations that makes you want to slow down and simply enjoy the view. Known for its clear blue water and dramatic mountain scenery, it offers a completely different experience from the desert landscapes and historic cities that many travellers associate with Xinjiang. 💙 My Experience — Falling in Love with the Blue of Sayram Lake The first thing that catches your attention is the colour of the lake. Depending on the sunlight and weather, the water can appear deep blue, turquoise, or a softer shade that blends beautifully with the sky. With mountains rising around it, the scenery feels both vast and peaceful. What I love most about Sayram Lake is that its beauty changes as you travel around it. One moment, you might be looking at clear water beside a rugged mountain slope. A little farther along, the landscape opens into green grasslands, with distant peaks forming a dramatic backdrop. In warmer months, the surrounding meadows can become especially beautiful. Wildflowers add splashes of colour, and the open grasslands create a wonderful contrast with the lake's deep blue water. It is easy to understand why so many travellers come here for photography. The atmosphere feels different from visiting a city attraction. There is no need to rush from one landmark to another. Sometimes, the most rewarding thing to do is stop at a viewpoint, watch the clouds move across the mountains, and appreciate how the colours of the lake change throughout the day. Sayram Lake is also known as the “last tear of the Atlantic Ocean,” a poetic nickname often used to describe its location at the far eastern edge of the Atlantic moisture influence. Whether or not you have heard this nickname before, the lake's cool mountain setting and striking blue water make it an unforgettable part of a Xinjiang journey. For me, Sayram Lake represents another side of Xinjiang — a place of open skies, alpine scenery, and a sense of space that is difficult to find in a busy city. 📸 What Makes Sayram Lake Worth Visiting? ✨ Incredible blue water — The lake's changing shades of blue are its most recognisable feature, especially on clear days. 🏔️ Snow-capped mountain views — The surrounding mountains create a beautiful contrast with the water and grasslands. 🌼 Seasonal grasslands and wildflowers — Late spring and summer can bring colourful meadows and greener scenery around the lake. 🚗 A scenic road trip — Travelling around the lake allows you to see different viewpoints and discover how dramatically the landscape changes. 📷 Beautiful photography opportunities — From wide panoramic views to close-up shots of the shoreline, there are plenty of ways to capture the scenery. 🌿 A peaceful escape into nature — Sayram Lake is ideal for travellers who want to spend more time enjoying landscapes rather than crowded urban attractions. 🧭 Travel Tips — How to Plan Your Visit 1. Choose your season based on the scenery you want. Late spring and summer are popular for greener grasslands and wildflowers, while autumn brings a different palette of colours. Winter can be beautiful too, but cold temperatures and snow may affect access and activities. Check local conditions before travelling. 2. Allow enough time to explore the lake. Don't treat Sayram Lake as a quick photo stop if your schedule allows. Different sections offer different views, and leaving time for several stops makes the journey much more rewarding. 3. Check the latest entrance and transport arrangements. Visitor services, ticket rules, shuttle arrangements, and access to particular areas can change. Confirm current details before your visit, especially if you are travelling independently. 4. Bring layers, even in summer. The lake is surrounded by mountains, and temperatures can be cooler than expected, particularly when the wind picks up. A light windproof jacket is useful even on a sunny day. 5. Protect yourself from the sun. At higher elevations, sunlight can feel strong even when the air is cool. Bring sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat, and remember to drink enough water. 6. Plan your transport carefully. Sayram Lake is often included in a wider Xinjiang road trip. Check driving times and road conditions in advance, and leave some flexibility for weather, photo stops, and unexpected delays. 7. Respect the natural environment. Stay on permitted paths, avoid disturbing wildlife, and take all rubbish with you. The lake's clear water and open landscape are exactly what make it so special. 💙 Final Thoughts — A Blue Lake I Would Love to See Again Sayram Lake is more than a beautiful place to take photographs. It is a destination where the mountains, grasslands, sky, and water come together to create a landscape that feels both grand and peaceful. What makes it memorable is the freedom to explore at your own pace. You can stop to admire the view, wait for the sunlight to change the colour of the water, or simply enjoy the quiet surroundings without feeling that you need to do anything else. If you are planning a trip to Xinjiang, I would strongly consider adding Sayram Lake to your itinerary, especially if you love natural scenery and scenic road trips. Give yourself enough time to appreciate its different viewpoints rather than rushing through. Some destinations impress you with famous landmarks. Others stay with you because of a colour, a view, or a moment of quiet. Sayram Lake has the kind of beauty that makes you want to pause, take one more look, and remember it long after the journey ends. 📍 Location: Bortala Mongol Autonomous Prefecture, Xinjiang, China 💙 Best for: Lake views, mountain scenery, photography, and scenic road trips 🌼 Suggested season: Late spring to summer for greener grasslands and wildflowers #SayramLake #XinjiangTravel #ChinaTravel #BlueLake #MountainScenery #NatureLovers #ScenicRoadTrip #TravelTips

Sayram Lake (赛里木湖), also known as Sailimu Lake, is a masterpiece of scenic beauty located in the Bortala Autonomous Prefecture, northern Xinjiang, China. It boasts crystal-clear sapphire blue waters reflecting the ice crystals stretching as far as the eye can see, and pristine white shores perfectly nestled amidst the Tian Shan mountain range. It offers a peaceful, refreshing, and dreamy escape from the cold winter air. · A Masterpiece The highlight of this trip, popular for its slow-paced, relaxing scenic routes, is the scenic drive along the sandy beach, lined with red and white lighthouses on the water's edge. And the scenic viewpoints featuring flocks of white swans surrounding snow-capped mountains include the following landmarks: · Sayram Lakeside Drive: A magnificent scenic route winding along the snow-covered coastline. The dark asphalt road gracefully winds along the shoreline, guiding tourists past brightly colored cars leisurely navigating the white snow, contrasting beautifully with the azure water and snow-capped mountains. · Red and White Lighthouse Viewpoint: A relaxing slow-life spot away from the hustle and bustle. Stand and unwind, admiring the round red and white lighthouse by the stone embankment. Look out onto the thick, soft blue carpet of water bathed in the cool afternoon sun, reflecting the power of nature and allowing the pure, refreshing breeze to flow freely. · Swan Lake & Wooden Bench Trail: A small walking trail on the snow-covered plain that winds alongside the natural landscape, leading you along in the cold wind to a single wooden bench by the water for enjoying the scenery. And the shallow waters where flocks of pure white Tundra Swans float gracefully alongside the rocks by the water's edge offer visitors a perfect and breathtaking experience to stroll along and breathe in the fresh air. Getting There Travel is very convenient by renting a car or using a local shuttle service. Starting from Yining or Urumqi, take the G30 highway, crossing the famous Guozhigou Bridge. The road is well-paved and provides easy and convenient access to the ring road around the lake. (The highlight time, with clear skies, crystal-clear turquoise water interspersed with white snow, and the largest number of migratory swans, is during the winter and spring seasons, from December to April.) (Every year) · Opening Hours and Entrance Fee · Opening Hours: The park is open to tour buses and tourists daily from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM. (The best time to see the pastel twilight behind the snow-covered mountains is in the evening.) · Entrance Fee: Adult park tickets, including the park's internal bus fee (or the fee for driving a private vehicle around the lake), start at approximately 140-145 yuan. It is recommended to register and purchase tickets in advance online for convenience. · Dress Code It is recommended to bring snow boots or hiking boots with good traction, as the shoreline is often covered in thick ice and snow. Also, bring a warm, windproof coat, down jacket, wool hat, and gloves, as the wind at high altitudes is strong and very cold throughout the day. For clothing, consider a white coat, a black down jacket, or a clean, minimalist dress paired with a dark-toned plaid skirt. It will help to accentuate your features and make you stand out when taking photos amidst the pristine white snow and turquoise water, creating the most exquisite and perfect scene. #sayramlake #xinjiangtravel #northernxinjiang #tundraswan #aplinelake #tianshanmountains #historiclandmark #slowlife #amazingphotospot #xinjiangreview #travelchinaonyourown #natureview #sayramlake #northernxinjiang #whiteswans

01 Zhoukou | Henan In October, the breeze in Zhoukou carries the crisp, dry air of the post-harvest Eastern Henan Plain. The Taihao Fuxi Mausoleum Cultural Tourism Zone is best visited in the morning. ⏰ Enter before 9:00 AM to avoid crowds; the shadows of the ancient cypresses in front of Tongtian Hall are long, and you won't be shooting against the light. The mausoleum area is quite large, so wear flat shoes. If seniors get tired, they can rest near the Wuchao Gate. 📍 Taiqing Palace is in the Luyi direction, not the same place as Fuxi Mausoleum. Don't set your GPS wrong; allow an hour for the drive. ⚠️ It is recommended to check the official channels in advance for daily opening hours and reservation rules for both locations. Ticket prices are subject to on-site announcements. 🍜 Back in downtown Zhoukou, find a bowl of Xiaoyao Town hot and sour soup with pan-fried buns. The temperature difference between morning and evening in October is significant, so a hot soup is just right. 02 Nanning | Guangxi Nanning in October is still at the tail end of summer. It's sunny during the day and only gets cool in the morning and evening. ⏰ For Qingxiu Mountain, we recommend heading up between 7:30 AM and 9:00 AM before the sun gets too strong. It's comfortable to walk around the Cycad Garden and Orchid Garden areas. 📍 Enter from the North Gate and slowly wind your way toward Guanyin Zen Temple. There is plenty of shade along the entire route, making it suitable for seniors and children. 🚄 Take Metro Line 3 to Qingxiu Mountain Station and transfer to the scenic area shuttle after exiting; it's less hassle than taking a taxi. Fubo Temple is over in Hengzhou, which is a different route. Don't try to squeeze it into the same day as Qingxiu Mountain. ⚠️ Afternoon showers can happen suddenly in October, so pack a folding umbrella. 🍜 After coming down the mountain, head to the Zhongshan Road area for Laoyou rice noodles. The pickled bamboo shoots have a strong flavor, so order a small bowl to try it out first. 03 Jingmen | Hubei The Mingxian Mausoleum area is at its most beautiful in October. The grass turns yellow, and the stone statues stand on both sides of the sacred path, creating layered effects as the light slants down. ⏰ Enter the mausoleum area after 3:00 PM when most tourists have left, so you won't have to wait for others to move to take photos. 📍 From the main gate, follow the sacred path to the Ling'en Hall ruins, then circle the Baocheng. The route is straightforward, and you won't have to backtrack. ⚠️ The mausoleum area consists mostly of stone slabs and dirt paths, so wear sturdy-soled shoes for better stability. The ground is slippery after rain, so seniors and children should walk slowly. Check official announcements for ticket prices and opening hours before you leave. This spot is suitable for those who enjoy ancient architecture and quiet walks, not for those looking to rush through a checklist. 🍜 Back in downtown Jingmen, look for Aizi pies as a souvenir; they come in both sweet and savory flavors. 04 Jiuquan | Gansu In October, the Hexi Corridor is warm and sunny during the day, but the wind gets harsh as soon as the sun sets. You must bring a jacket. ⏰ For Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Lake, we recommend entering after 5:00 PM. Climb the sand dunes to watch the sunset; the light hitting the lake is stunning. 📍 You must book the Mogao Caves in advance through official channels. Spots are limited during peak season, so don't wait if you can't get a reservation. Yadan National Geological Park is far from the city and windy, so have a hat and scarf ready. The Yumenguan Pass ruins are vast, and standing in the October wind feels a bit desolate—perfect for those who love frontier landscapes. ⚠️ The temperature difference between day and night in Dunhuang can be over 10 degrees. Add a fleece layer in the morning and evening. 🚄 The attractions are far apart, so chartering a car or joining a legitimate one-day tour is easier. Don't rely on public transport to get between them. 🍜 Return to the city in the evening for a bowl of donkey meat yellow noodles. 05 Bortala | Xinjiang In October, Bortala's Sayram Lake has begun to embrace autumn colors. The lake water is a deep blue, the grasslands by the lake are turning yellow, and the wind is strong enough to blow your hat off. ⏰ The light is most stable between 10:00 AM and 3:00 PM. If you go too early, the lake surface is prone to fog. 📍 The road around the lake is great for a road trip; stop and go as you please, but don't stand in windy spots for too long. The gullies of Anjihai Grand Canyon are distinct in the autumn sun; stay away from unfenced edges of the viewing platforms. The landscape area in Wenquan County is a good place to stay for a night; soak in the hot springs to relieve the fatigue of your journey. ⚠️ In the mountains, temperatures approach zero in the morning and evening in October, so don't think it's too early for a down jacket. 🚄 The drive between spots is long, so prepare fuel and dry rations in advance. There are dead zones for mobile signal. 06 Xiangtan | Hunan Caojia'ao Waterfall is best visited after rain. In October, rainfall in central Hunan tapers off quickly, so the water volume depends on the weather. Ask about local conditions before you leave so you don't make a wasted trip. 📍 The mountain paths around the waterfall are slippery, so wear non-slip shoes and hold children's hands tightly. The Shaoshan Tourism Zone is a different route; ⏰ we recommend arriving in the morning when crowds are relatively thinner, and wait times around the former residence are shorter. ⚠️ Restaurant prices around the scenic area vary, so ask for unit prices before ordering. This area is best suited for road trips, as public transport is infrequent. 🍜 Back in downtown Xiangtan, find a bowl of Xiangtan rice noodles. Choose shredded pork or hot and sour toppings; it's most authentic for breakfast. It's cool in the morning and evening in October, so keep a light jacket with you. 07 Qiannan | Guizhou In October, the water at Libo Zhangjiang is still green, and the weather is milder than in midsummer, so you won't be drenched in sweat walking through Xiaoqikong. ⏰ Enter the East Gate at 8:00 AM and follow the sightseeing bus route to the Xiaoqikong Ancient Bridge first, then head toward Wolongtan to avoid peak tour group times. 📍 The stones in the Water Forest section are slippery, so wear shoes with good tread. Seniors will be more stable walking on the outer boardwalk. ⚠️ There are few supply points inside the scenic area, so bring enough water and dry rations. Libo is cool in the morning and evening in October, so a short-sleeve shirt with a light jacket is sufficient. This is suitable for those who love water scenery and hiking, not for those who dislike walking. 🍜 After leaving the scenic area, find a serving of Libo cured pork or sour soup fish; it's tangy and appetizing. 08 Xing'an League | Inner Mongolia In October, Arxan National Forest Park is at the peak of the larch trees turning gold. The colors are most concentrated around Tuofengling Heaven Lake and Azalea Lake. ⏰ We recommend entering the park in the morning when the light is clear on the birch and pine forests. It gets cold quickly in the mountains after 4:00 PM. 📍 The park is large, so follow the routes if you are driving or chartering a car. Don't try to do too much; pick three or four spots and take your time. ⚠️ Temperatures in the forest area approach freezing in the morning and evening in October, so bring thermal underwear and a thick jacket. Pay attention to fire safety regulations when entering the mountains during the fire prevention season. This is suitable for those who want to see autumn colors without crowding into popular tourist spots. 🚄 Arxan has a train station; renting a car after arrival is more flexible. 🍜 Have a meal of hand-grabbed meat in town, paired with milk tea to warm up. Pick the two places you want to visit most, and save the rest for next autumn.

01 Shanghai In October, the sycamore leaves in Shanghai turn a caramel color, and the crowds are thinner than in summer. The Expo Park riverside walkway is perfect for visiting after 4:00 PM; the river breeze is gentle, making it comfortable for both runners and those pushing strollers. The area around the Zigzag Bridge at Yuyuan Garden is always crowded, but if you enter before 8:30 AM, you can get a shot of the Mid-Lake Pavilion without heads blocking the view. The underwater exhibition hall at Guangfulin Relics Park is worth setting aside half a day for. ⏰ The light hitting the water courtyard at an angle in the morning looks best. ⚠️ It is closed on Mondays, so plan accordingly to avoid a wasted trip. Disney weekday tickets are significantly cheaper than weekend ones. The October Halloween night session requires a separate reservation. If you want to ride the attractions, head straight for the TRON Lightcycle Power Run as soon as the park opens. 🍜 Don't force yourself to eat in the park; heading out to Chuansha Old Street for a bowl of local mutton soup is a more satisfying option. 02 Luoyang | Henan Autumn in Luoyang is crisp and dry. At the Longmen Grottoes, the west side is well-lit after 3:00 PM, making the facial details of the Vairocana Buddha clear. 📍 There is an unbranded soup shop at the end of Longmen Ancient Street. They serve beef soup with shredded pancakes, and locals slurp it while squatting at the entrance. Guanlin Temple is best visited on the same day as Longmen; they are a 15-minute taxi ride apart. After visiting Guanlin, head to the Old Town Cross Street for a water banquet. Don't order a large portion of the meat slices in soup; a small portion is enough for two people. It is recommended to visit Laojun Mountain and Jiguan Cave on separate days. In late October, the leaves on the mountain start to change color, and the cable car lines will get longer. ⚠️ It is easy to miss the last cable car if you go up the mountain after 2:00 PM. Wangcheng Park has a chrysanthemum exhibition in the autumn, which is great for taking elderly family members for a leisurely stroll. The admission fee is cheap, but avoid the weekends. 03 Chenzhou | Hunan The highlight of Gaoyiling Danxia is the reflection in the pools. ⏰ The light is low from 7:00 AM to 9:00 AM, making the red rocks and green water look their best; after 10:00 AM, the light becomes harsh and flat. The mist at Dongjiang Lake is a seasonal specialty; it is still present in October mornings, but it is thinner than in summer. Remember to bring a windbreaker when taking a boat tour on the lake. There is no shade on the walkways in the Gaoyiling Scenic Area. ⚠️ Don't wear flip-flops, as the gravel paths are slippery. There is a noticeable temperature difference after taking the cable car up to Mangshan Wuzhifeng; the summit is 7–8 degrees cooler than the base, so you will need to add a fleece layer in October. 🍜 Head back to the city for Qifengdu fish noodles. The soup is richest in the morning, and it loses its flavor after noon. 04 Nanning | Guangxi People are still wearing short sleeves in Nanning in October. Qingxiu Mountain is the local "backyard" for weekends; enter from the North Gate and head straight to the Cycad Garden, where it is less crowded and the trees are dense. Fubo Temple is by the Yong River; it is not large, but it is quiet, making it perfect for an evening stroll to watch the river. 📍 The Zhongshan Road Night Market only gets lively after 7:00 PM. For rolled rice noodles and suanye stalls, look for the ones with long lines. The "slowness" of Nanning comes from riding electric scooters through the streets and alleys, which is perfect for those who aren't in a rush to visit attractions. ⚠️ The Qingxiu Mountain park is large, and sightseeing car tickets must be bought separately. It takes at least 3 hours to walk through it. 🚄 Take Metro Line 3 to Qingxiu Mountain Station, then walk 10 minutes to the North Gate. 05 Chizhou | Anhui Autumn at Mount Jiuhua turns from yellow at the base to the mountainside. Take the cable car up the mountain in late October, and the probability of seeing a sea of clouds is higher than in summer. ⏰ The area around Baisui Palace is least crowded at 6:30 AM, before the pilgrims arrive. Don't expect the vegetarian meals on the mountain to be amazing; just eat enough to be full. ⚠️ The incense shops that solicit customers at the base of the mountain have inflated prices; bring your own or buy them once you are on the mountain. It is windy on Mount Jiuhua, so you will need to wear a light down jacket in the mornings and evenings in October. 🍜 When you go down the mountain, head into Chizhou city to eat xiaoba; eat the radish-filled ones while they are hot. This is suitable for people who want two days of peace and quiet, not for those rushing through an itinerary. 06 Xiangyang | Hubei Ancient Longzhong is in the west of Xiangyang city. The osmanthus flowers haven't fully fallen in October, and the scent follows you along the path to the mountain gate. 📍 The stone steps in front of Sangu Hall are a good place to sit and rest. Reading the information boards is more reliable than listening to unlicensed tour guides. The core of Longzhong is that sense of "half mountain, half city" tranquility, not the density of photo spots. ⚠️ A one-way ticket for the scenic area shuttle bus is enough; it is a 20-minute walk up, and the scenery along the way is better than from the bus. 🚄 It is about a 30-minute taxi ride from Xiangyang East Station. It is suitable for a leisurely visit with parents; half a day is enough, so don't pack your schedule too full. 07 Bortala | Xinjiang Sayram Lake is already cold in October, and the wind by the lake is strong. ⚠️ A shell jacket with a fleece layer is a must; don't let the midday sun fool you. The lake water is a deep, intense blue, with less mist than in summer. There are fewer cars on the road around the lake, making it perfect for a slow, self-driving trip. The red rock layers of the Anjihai Grand Canyon are even more vibrant in the autumn light. ⏰ It is best to photograph the canyon walls between 5:00 PM and 7:00 PM. The landscape of Wenquan County offers a different kind of tranquility, with the birch leaves in the river valley turning fully yellow; it is worth staying for a night. 🍜 Go for pilaf in the county town at noon; the meat gets tough if you go too late. 08 Southwest Guizhou | Guizhou The water level at Maling River Canyon has dropped a bit in October, but the waterfalls are still there. Wear non-slip shoes when walking on the valley floor boardwalk. ⚠️ The mist is heavy, so wipe your camera lens frequently. The Bagua Field in Wanfenglin is golden yellow in the autumn. ⏰ Before 8:00 AM, the peak-viewing path is empty, and the light hits the peaks at an angle. 📍 The local way to eat is egg fried rice with pickled chili in Xianahui Village; don't eat at the entrance of the scenic area. It is suitable for a self-driving trip, with a drive of just over an hour between the two spots. October has a large temperature difference; wear short sleeves at noon and a jacket in the mornings and evenings. None of these 8 places are "must-visits." Pick one close to you and stay for two nights; it is more comfortable than rushing to three spots. Tell us in the comments which city you want to visit in October.

Sayram Lake in winter is not just about seeing snow. The alpine lake at an altitude of over 2,000 meters freezes into a deep blue. Ice ridges pile up on the shore like ocean waves, ice bubbles look like a frozen starry sky, and swans swim among the floating ice. Every snapshot feels like stepping into a chilly fairy tale. 📍Location Sayram Lake Scenic Area, Bole City, Bortala Mongol Autonomous Prefecture, Xinjiang ❄️Best time to visit · Late Dec–Feb: Blue ice and ice bubbles are most stable, with thick ice and high clarity. · Dec–early Jan, Mar–Apr: Ice ridges are common; broken ice pushed ashore by the wind looks like blue crystal waves. · 10:00 AM–2:00 PM: The ice looks bluest under sunlight; 4:00 PM–6:00 PM: Best for photographing ice ridges and sunsets. 🎫Admission & transport · Off-season admission is about CNY 35/person, and the self-drive package is about CNY 110/vehicle, valid for 48 hours. There are no gas stations inside the scenic area, so be sure to fill up before entering. · Non-drivers can take the shuttle bus, but winter schedules and stops may change, so it is best to confirm before departure. · The lake loop is about 90 km. We recommend entering through the East Gate and exiting through the South Gate, traveling counter-clockwise for better lighting. 🧊Must-see wonders 1. Blue ice: Best in Jan–Feb. As the October winds cool, children's endless questions awaken. Instead of flipping through picture books at home, why not choose a place where dinosaurs, snow-capped mountains, volcanic islands, and migratory birds can answer their questions? Here are 8 places to take your kids in October—they'll broaden their horizons and improve their physical fitness. 1️⃣ Nanyang|Henan The Xixia Funiu Mountain Laojieling Dinosaur Relics Park enters its most comfortable time of year in October. Daytime temperatures are in the teens Celsius, and walking on the boardwalk won't make you sweat; children can easily climb the entire route on their own. ⏰ It's recommended to arrive at the Dinosaur Relics Park before 9:00 AM, as the egg fossil exhibit is less crowded and the explanations are easier to hear. 📍 At the fork near the lower station of the Laojieling cable car, the left leads to the Dinosaur Park, and the right leads to the hiking trail. Don't go the wrong way. ⚠️ The temperature drops quickly in the mountains after 4:00 PM in October. Bring a light down jacket or fleece; the wind at the summit is significantly stronger than at the foot of the mountain. If you only have a weekend, I recommend spending the first day at the Dinosaur Relics Park and the second day hiking at Laojieling. Don't cram other attractions in Xixia into your itinerary. 🚄 There are buses from Nanyang Station to Xixia, taking about an hour and a half. Driving is more flexible. Most guesthouses in the mountains are concentrated around Taiping Town, so staying there allows you to explore the mountains on the second day without rushing. This is suitable for elementary school students interested in paleontology; kindergarten children can focus on the Dinosaur Park. 2️⃣ Shannan | Tibet Yamdrok Lake in October has clear light and incredibly blue water, but if you're bringing children, be aware of the risk of altitude sickness. ⏰ I recommend departing from Lhasa in the morning. Crossing the Gangbala Pass will provide the best lighting, resulting in the most saturated colors of the lake. 📍 The viewpoint at the pass is the first stop. Further down, there are other points for closer contact with the lake. Don't just stop at the first stop and turn back. ⚠️ The altitude is approximately 4400 meters. If your child has a cold or is sleep-deprived, it's advisable to skip this route; don't risk your health for the scenery. Ticket and vehicle entry rules are subject to official announcements on the day of travel; queuing may be necessary during peak season. 🚄 Hiring a car or joining a small group tour is the most common way to get to Lhasa, taking about two hours one way. Prepare glucose, warm water, and snacks for your child; prevent them from running or jumping on the way. The temperature difference between day and night in October can exceed 15 degrees Celsius, so a down jacket, hat, and sunglasses are essential. This is suitable for older children with good physical health; it's not recommended for very young children at this altitude. 3️⃣ Beihai|Guangxi Weizhou Island and Beihai Silver Beach can be combined into a four- or five-day seaside vacation. The typhoon season is mostly over in October, the seawater is still warm, and there are half the number of people compared to summer. ⏰ It's recommended to go to Silver Beach in the evening; after the tide recedes, the beach is wide, and children can play in the sand without getting sunburned. 📍 Watch the sunrise at Wucai Beach on Weizhou Island and the sunset at Dishui Danping; don't get them mixed up. ⚠️ Island tickets and entrance fees need to be booked in advance, as they tend to be fully booked on weekends in October. Please refer to the official announcement for the day. The Crocodile Mountain Volcanic Park on the island is a truly educational place. The volcanic rocks and sea caves are explained as you walk around, making it more intuitive than textbooks. 🍜 Buy seafood at the Nanwan Street Seafood Market and find a restaurant to cook it. Ask about the cooking fee before ordering. Accommodation options are divided: stay near Dripstone Screen if you want to go beachcombing, or stay on Nanwan Street if you want convenient dining. 🚄 Take a taxi from Beihai Station to the International Passenger Port (about 20 minutes), then take a boat to the island. Suitable for children who enjoy playing in the water, digging in the sand, and seeing volcanic landforms. Don't overschedule; leave half a day for relaxation. 4️⃣ Shangrao|Jiangxi The Shangrao route has many attractions. Sanqingshan, Wuyuan Jiangwan, Guifeng, and Huangling each have their own highlights in October, but trying to see them all at once will exhaust the kids. ⏰ The best time to photograph the autumn harvest in Huangling is mid-to-late October, when the morning sunlight is at an angle, resulting in vibrant colors on the drying trays. 📍 For Sanqingshan, the South Qingyuan loop is recommended. The Giant Python Emerging from the Mountain and the Eastern Goddess are on the same side of the route, making it convenient. ⚠️ The boardwalks at Guifeng are quite narrow, making it inconvenient for strollers; small children will need to be carried in a baby carrier. Jiangwan in Wuyuan is more culturally rich, with ancient houses, streets, and waterways, perfect for exploring and sharing Huizhou stories. The Huangling cable car queues can be very long on weekends, so arriving early is the only solution. 🍜 Try Wuyuan's tofu soup and steamed rice cakes; children love them. It's recommended to split your accommodation into two nights: one night at the foot of Sanqingshan and one night near Huangling or Jiangwan to avoid the hassle of a day trip. 🚄 Shangrao Station is a transportation hub with buses to both Sanqingshan and Wuyuan. Suitable for school-aged children who can walk; for kindergarteners, it's recommended to only visit Huangling and Jiangwan. 5️⃣ Hengshui|Hebei October marks the start of bird season at Hengshui Lake. Taking children to see, identify, and remember birds is more meaningful than going to an amusement park. ⏰ Birds are most active at dawn and dusk, but quieter at midday. 📍 The birdwatching spots on the east side of the lake offer a wide view; bring binoculars to clearly see cormorants and coots. ⚠️ Do not feed the birds, do not chase them loudly, and wear dark clothing to minimize disturbance. A full day is recommended for Hengshui Lake: birdwatching in the morning, and cycling or boating around the lake in the afternoon. 🍜 The area around the lake mainly offers farm-style cuisine; stewed fish and cornbread are plentiful. It can be windy by the lake in October, so bring a windproof jacket for children. 🚄 A taxi from Hengshui Station to the lake area takes about half an hour; driving is more convenient. Suitable for children interested in nature observation. It's recommended to bring a local bird guidebook to compare and match. Ticket and boat fares are subject to official announcements on the day. 6️⃣ Dehong|Yunnan The Meng Huan Grand Golden Pagoda is located in Mangshi. October's dry weather is ideal for taking children to experience Theravada Buddhist architecture and Dai ethnic customs. ⏰ Evening is best; the pagoda reflects the sunset, preventing backlighting in photos. 📍 The square at the foot of the pagoda offers a panoramic view of the Mangshi Basin. ⚠️ Shoes must be removed before entering the pagoda, and clothing must be knee-length or shorter. Explain the rules to your children beforehand to avoid any pulling or tugging. This stop is better suited as part of a western Yunnan loop, connecting with Ruili and Tengchong. 🍜 Try the Ersi (rice noodles) and Sa Pie (sa pie) at the Mangshi breakfast stalls. If children are afraid of spicy food, order the clear soup version. Staying in Mangshi city center, it's a 10-15 minute taxi ride to the Golden Pagoda. 🚄 Mangshi has an airport, and you can also drive there from Tengchong or Ruili. Suitable for families interested in ethnic minority architecture and markets; October has less rain, making travel comfortable. Ticket prices and opening hours are subject to official announcements on the day. 7️⃣ Bortala | Xinjiang Sayram Lake, Anjihai Grand Canyon, and the scenery of Wenquan County – this combination in October offers a chance for kids to "bring their geography textbooks to life." ⏰ Sayram Lake is bright and clear in the morning, with distinct layers of water. 📍 Don't miss the several viewpoints along the lakeside road; Dianjiangtai offers the most expansive views. ⚠️ The wind is chilly by the lake in October, feeling significantly colder than in the city; down jackets are a must. Anjihai Grand Canyon is another breathtaking sight; the red soil formations appear as if cut by a knife, perfect for discussing tectonic movements. 🍜 There are few places to eat along the way, so it's recommended to bring your own food and water. Wenquan County offers hot springs to relieve travel fatigue, and staying in the county town is convenient. 🚄 Driving or hiring a car is recommended, as public transportation is infrequent. This itinerary is best suited for older children who can tolerate long-distance travel. Plan for three days and two nights; avoid filling a single day. Road conditions and scenic spot openings are subject to official announcements on the day of your trip. 8️⃣ Haidong|Qinghai The Huzhu Tu Ethnic Homeland Park and Youning Temple are located in Haidong. In October, when autumn colors arrive, Qinghai's blue skies paired with golden leaves create a tranquil and beautiful scene. ⏰ Visit Youning Temple in the morning; the soft lighting allows for a clearer view of the temple's details. 📍 The Tu ethnic group's wheel swing and Anzhao dance have fixed performance times at the Homeland Park; check the schedule before entering. ⚠️ No photography or loud noise inside the temple; please arrange this with your children beforehand. This stop is suitable as a supplementary day trip to Qinghai Lake or the Xining area, without requiring a dedicated flight. 🍜 Try the Tu ethnic minority's special food in Huzhu; the barley wine is for adults. October has a large temperature difference between day and night—sunny at midday and chilly in the mornings and evenings—layering your clothes like an onion is most practical. 🚄 The drive from Xining to Huzhu takes about an hour; you can drive yourself or hire a car. Suitable for families who want their children to experience different ethnic cultures; a slow-paced trip is sufficient for half a day. Ticket and performance schedules are subject to official announcements on the day. October is short, but children's memories are long. Pick the closest and least hectic destination to visit first, and save the rest for the next holiday. Which place would you most like to take your child to? As soon as the October winds cool down, your child's endless questions awaken. Instead of flipping through picture books at home, choose a place where dinosaurs, snow-capped mountains, volcanic islands, and migratory birds can answer their questions. Here are 8 places to take your child in October—broadening their horizons and expanding their stamina. 1️⃣ Nanyang|Henan The Xixia Funiu Mountain Laojieling Dinosaur Relics Park tourist area enters its most comfortable time of year in October. Most guesthouses in the mountains are concentrated in the Taiping Town area; staying there allows for a more relaxed hike into the mountains the next day. The typhoon season is mostly over in October, the seawater is still warm, and there are half the crowds compared to summer. ⏰ Silver Beach is best visited in the evening when the tide recedes, as the beach is wide and children can play in the sand without getting sunburned. 📍 Watch the sunrise at Wucai Beach on Weizhou Island and the sunset at Dishui Danping; don't get them mixed up. ⚠️ Island ferry tickets and entrance tickets need to be booked in advance, as they tend to fill up quickly on weekends in October. Sanqingshan, Wuyuan Jiangwan, Guifeng, and Huangling each have their own highlights in October, but trying to see them all at once will exhaust the kids. ⏰ Huangling's autumn sun-drying scene is most photogenic in mid-to-late October. The morning sunlight is at an angle, resulting in the perfect colors of the drying trays. 📍 For Sanqingshan, it's recommended to take the Nanqingyuan loop. The Giant Python Emerging from the Mountain and the Oriental Goddess are on the same side, so it's convenient. ⚠️ The boardwalks at Guifeng are quite narrow, making strollers inconvenient; small children will need to be carried. Suitable for school-aged children who can walk; for kindergarten children, it's recommended to only visit Huangling and Jiangwan. 5️⃣ Hengshui|Hebei Hengshui Lake enters its migratory bird season in October. Taking children to see, identify, and remember birds is more meaningful than going to an amusement park. ⏰ Birds are most active at dawn and dusk, but quieter at midday. 📍 The birdwatching spot on the east side of the lake offers a wide view; with binoculars, you can clearly see cormorants and coots. ⚠️ Do not feed the birds, do not shout or chase them, and wear dark clothing to minimize disturbance. It can be windy by the lake in October, so bring a windproof jacket for children. 🚄 It takes about half an hour by taxi from Hengshui Station to the lake area; driving is more convenient. Suitable for children interested in nature observation; it is recommended to bring a local bird atlas to refer to. Ticket and boat fares are subject to official announcements on the day. 6️⃣ Dehong|Yunnan The Meng Huan Grand Golden Pagoda is located in Mangshi. October has dry weather, making it a good time to bring children to experience Theravada Buddhist architecture and Dai ethnic customs. ⏰ It's best to visit in the late afternoon or early evening, as the pagoda reflects the setting sun, creating a beautiful backdrop for photos. 📍 The square at the foot of the pagoda offers a panoramic view of the Mangshi Basin. ⚠️ Shoes must be removed before entering the pagoda, and clothing must be knee-length or shorter. Explain the rules to your children beforehand to prevent them from pulling or tugging at the pagoda. This stop is ideal as part of a loop tour of western Yunnan, connecting with Ruili and Tengchong. 🍜 Try the rice noodles and sa pie at the breakfast stalls in Mangshi. If your children are sensitive to spice, order the clear soup version. If you're staying in Mangshi city, it's a short taxi ride (around 10-15 minutes) to the pagoda. 🚄 Mangshi has an airport, and you can also drive there from Tengchong or Ruili. This is suitable for families interested in ethnic minority architecture and markets. October has less rain, making it a comfortable month to visit. Ticket prices and opening hours are subject to official announcements on the day of your visit. 7️⃣ Bortala | Xinjiang Sayram Lake, Anjihai Grand Canyon, and the scenic landscapes of Wenquan County – this itinerary in October offers a chance for kids to "bring their geography textbooks to life." ⏰ Sayram Lake is bathed in clear morning light, revealing distinct layers of water. 📍 Don't miss the several viewpoints along the lakeside road; Dianjiangtai offers the most expansive views. ⚠️ The lakeside is chilly in October, feeling significantly colder than in the city; a down jacket is essential. Anjihai Grand Canyon offers a different kind of breathtaking experience; the red rock formations appear as if sliced open, perfect for discussing tectonic activity. 🍜 There are few places to eat along the way, so it's recommended to bring your own food and water. In Wenquan County, you can relax in the hot springs to relieve travel fatigue; staying in the county town is convenient. 🚄 Driving or hiring a car is recommended, as public transportation is infrequent. This itinerary is best suited for older children who can tolerate long-distance travel; plan for three days and two nights, rather than trying to cram everything into one day. Road conditions and scenic area openings are subject to official announcements on the day. 8️⃣ Haidong|Qinghai The Huzhu Tu Ethnic Homeland Park and Youning Temple are located in Haidong. In October, as autumn colors unfold, Qinghai's blue skies paired with golden leaves create a tranquil and captivating scene. ⏰ Visit Youning Temple in the morning; the soft light allows for clearer views of the temple buildings' details. 📍 The Tu ethnic group's wheel swing and Anzhao dance have fixed performance times at the Homeland Park; check the schedule before entering. ⚠️ No photography or loud noise inside the temple; arrange this with your children beforehand. It's suitable for families who want their children to experience different ethnic cultures; the pace is slow, and half a day is enough. Ticket and performance schedules are subject to official announcements on the day. October isn't long, but children's memories are long. Pick the closest and least troublesome destination to go first, and save the rest for next holiday. Which place would you most like to take your kids to?

Three-day stay in October: 8️⃣ less crowded and comfortable places 01 Bortala | Xinjiang October in Bortala is already autumnal. The grasslands around Sayram Lake turn from green to yellow, and the lake water is a deep, rich blue. ⏰ Arrive at the lake before 10 am. The sunlight will be slanting across the water, allowing you to capture the reflection of the snow-capped mountains. Afternoons are windy, so standing for too long can be uncomfortable. The ring road around the lake is about 90 kilometers long; driving is the safest option. Hiring a car for a day will cost around 400-600 yuan, so remember to arrange the waiting time in advance. Anjihai Grand Canyon has a different feel altogether. The red soil layers have been carved into steep walls by the river; standing on the edge will make your legs weak. ⚠️ There are no guardrails in the canyon. Don't try to get a good shot by going close to the edge, especially in strong winds. It's about an hour's drive from the Kuitun direction. The road conditions are average; those with low ground clearance should be cautious. The scenery of Wenquan County is best enjoyed on the third day. After soaking in the hot springs, take a walk along the river valley. October nights can get close to freezing, so bring thermal underwear and a thick coat. For accommodation, consider Bole city center; there are many chain hotels, and dining is convenient. Pilaf and baked buns are safe choices. 02 Lingshui | Hainan October in Lingshui is still at the tail end of the rainy season. Showers come and go quickly, making it more comfortable than midsummer. Fenjiezhou Island is best visited in the morning; the boat trip is short, and even those prone to seasickness can handle it. 📍 Moonlight Castle and Jueduan Valley on the island are great photo spots, but the midday sun is intense, so it's recommended to leave before 11 am. Nanwan Monkey Island requires taking the cross-sea cable car. The view from the cable car of the densely packed fish rafts is quite spectacular. ⚠️ The monkeys on the island will snatch plastic bags and drinks, so keep your backpack zipped up and don't take food from them. Families with children are advised to take the cable car round trip, as walking down the mountain is not good for the knees. For food, consider a meal at the Tanka fishing rafts in Xincun Port. Seafood is sold by weight, so ask about prices before ordering. For accommodation, choose the Qingshui Bay area; there are many apartment-style hotels, suitable for a two-night stay at a leisurely pace. The typhoon season isn't completely over in October, so check the weather forecast before you go and don't rush. 03 Nanchang | Jiangxi Autumn is just beginning in Nanchang in October, and Tengwang Pavilion is a must-see. ⏰ It's recommended to climb the pavilion after 4 PM to see the sunset and evening glow over the Gan River, which is much more comfortable than the backlighting in the morning. Book tickets in advance through official channels; queuing on-site can take more than half an hour. Around Tengwang Pavilion, you can stroll along Rongmen Road and Shengli Road pedestrian streets. Mixed rice noodles and clay pot soup are standard breakfast items, and you can get a filling meal for just a few yuan. 📍 Wanshou Palace Historical and Cultural District is suitable for leisurely strolls after the lights come on at night, but it's heavily commercialized; whether to buy anything depends on your mood. Nanchang Metro Line 1 goes directly to the vicinity of Tengwang Pavilion, making transportation convenient. For accommodation, choose areas around Honggutan or Bayi Square for easy access to various destinations. Temperatures start to fluctuate significantly in October; a light jacket is needed in the mornings and evenings, while short sleeves are still comfortable at midday. 04 Baoding | Hebei October in Baoding is the peak season for autumn colors. The red leaves on Baishi Mountain begin to turn vibrant from mid-October, and it's much less crowded than Xiangshan. ⏰ It's recommended to arrive at the East Gate before 7:30 AM, take the cable car up the mountain, walk along the glass walkway and the Shuangxiong Stone route, and descend before 2 PM to avoid tour groups. Qingxi Mausoleum is suitable for those who prefer tranquility; the pines and stone statues appear particularly solemn in autumn. 📍 The Sacred Way of Tai Mausoleum is very pleasant to walk on; the ginkgo leaves turn yellow from late October to early November. The water level in Bailixia Gorge in Yesanpo is low in October, but it's cool in the gorge, so a jacket is necessary. The lotus flowers in Baiyangdian, Anxin, are long gone this season, but the reeds are golden, offering a different kind of charm when traveled by boat. ⚠️ Boat fares in the Baiyangdian area are opaque; negotiate the route and price before boarding, and don't listen to recommendations for additional stops along the way. Stay overnight in Baoding city and have donkey meat sandwiches for breakfast—freshly made is far superior to vacuum-packed ones. 05 Enshi | Hubei Enshi Grand Canyon in October is often foggy with few sunny days, but the chance of a sea of clouds is also high. ⏰ It's recommended to enter the scenic area before 8 AM, first hiking the Yunlong Ground Fissure and then ascending Qixingzhai. The entire trip takes six to seven hours. If you have knee problems, buy a cable car and elevator combo ticket; don't push yourself. Shennongxi Boatmen's Cultural Tourism Area is perfect for boating to see the autumn colors on both banks; the leaves start turning yellow in mid-to-late October. Enshi Tusi City is located in the city center and can be explored in half a day, making it suitable for a visit on the day of arrival or before departure. 📍 Boat trips on the Qingjiang Gallery are scheduled, so check the times in advance to avoid waiting at the dock. Enshi cuisine tends to be sour and spicy; dishes like Heza (a type of stew), cured meat, and oil tea soup are worth trying. Staying near the train station or around Daughter City is fine; sharing a taxi to the scenic area is more cost-effective. October is still rainy, so raincoats are more practical than umbrellas. Mountain roads are slippery, so wear non-slip shoes. 06 Guoluo | Qinghai October in Guoluo is already deep autumn; the grasslands at the First Bend of the Yellow River turn golden brown, and there are fewer tourists, allowing for a quiet river view. ⏰ The light is softest after 4 PM, giving the water in the bend a metallic sheen, but the temperature drops sharply after sunset, so a down jacket is a must. Road conditions from the Maqin direction are acceptable; driving or hiring a car is the main way to get there. Public transportation is infrequent, so don't expect to find a ride on the fly. ⚠️ At altitudes above 3600 meters, altitude sickness is no joke. Arrive in Xining two days in advance to acclimatize, and start taking Rhodiola rosea beforehand. Accommodation is limited, and hot water supply in county hotels is unreliable; be prepared. October may see the first snowfall; check road conditions before you leave, as some roads may be closed after snowfall. Suitable for those who prefer open spaces and quiet, not for tourists seeking crowds and comfort. 07 Taizhou|Zhejiang Taizhou in October boasts clear skies and crisp autumn air. Guoqing Temple on Tiantai Mountain is worth visiting early in the morning. The Sui Plum blossoms haven't yet bloomed, but the ancient trees and rice paddies within the temple grounds are at their most beautiful. ⏰ Enter as soon as it opens at 7 am; there are fewer tourists, and the light filtering through the trees is very pleasant. The Shiliang Waterfall has moderate water flow in October; a complete loop takes about two hours. The Taizhou Ancient City Cultural Tourism Area is located in Linhai. Ziyang Street is perfect for a leisurely stroll in autumn; seaweed cakes and egg white sheep's tail are convenient snacks along the way. 📍 From Lansheng Gate, ascend the Taizhou City Wall and walk to Gujing Tower for panoramic views. The entire journey takes a little over an hour, suitable even for the elderly. Shenxianju is recommended to be visited on its own, with Nantian Peak and Ruyi Bridge being the key attractions. The cable car and walking take approximately five hours. ⚠️ The weather on the mountain changes rapidly, so bring a raincoat and avoid wearing white shoes. Staying in Linhai or Xianju County in Taizhou is fine; October hotel prices are more affordable than during the summer holidays. Take the high-speed train to Taizhou West Station and then transfer. 08 Nanchong|Sichuan October is the most comfortable month in Langzhong Ancient City. The breeze along the Jialing River is cool but not cold, and the osmanthus blossoms in the ancient city may still retain their fragrance. ⏰ It is recommended to go up to Huaguang Tower after 5 pm to see the twilight over the river and rooftops, which offers more depth than during the day. A pass for the ancient city is available only if you need it; no ticket is required if you only want to explore the streets and alleys. 📍 Zhang Fei Temple and the Imperial Examination Hall are the core attractions. Hiring a guide will give you a lot of insight; trying to explore on your own might feel rushed. You can try Zhang Fei beef and Baoning vinegar in the ancient city, but avoid buying them on the main streets; the prices are more reasonable in the alleys. Langzhong is ideal for a two-night stay. Spend the first day exploring the ancient city and the second day visiting Jinping Mountain for panoramic views. 🚄 Langzhong is about an hour's drive from Nanchong North Station; taking the high-speed train to Langzhong Station is more convenient. October has significant temperature differences between day and night; a light sweater and jacket are perfect, while you can still wear a single layer under the midday sun. These eight places in October offer different experiences: some for autumn colors, some to avoid crowds, and some perfect for relaxation. Choose one close to you and stay for three days—it's more comfortable than rushing. Which one would you most like to visit? Let's discuss in the comments.

01 Chongqing October in Chongqing is just right, with the heat having cooled down. Daytime temperatures are in the low 20s (°C), but you'll need a light jacket when the river breeze picks up at night. I recommend setting aside a whole morning for the Dazu Rock Carvings. For the Reclining Buddha and Thousand-Hand Guanyin at Baoding Mountain, the details are clearest when the light hits the grotto eaves at an angle. ⏰ Arrive before 9:00 AM to avoid tour groups. Jinyun Mountain is great for an afternoon hike; you can see the autumn colors of the Jialing River Lesser Three Gorges from Lion Peak, where ginkgo and maple trees turn yellow. The mountain paths have many steps, so taking the cable car up and down is easier on your knees. Water levels at Wulong Karst are lower in October, but the mist at the Three Natural Bridges makes for better photos. The fissures are slippery, so wear shoes with good tread. Water levels in the Yangtze Three Gorges are stable this season, and red leaves start coloring from Wushan upwards starting in late October. It's windy on the deck when the boat passes through Qutang Gorge. ⚠️ Food on the boat is pricey, so bringing your own snacks is more practical. For accommodation in the city, choose Jiefangbei or Guanyinqiao for convenient light rail transfers. Don't just stick to viral hotpot spots; the old-school places in residential buildings are more reliable. 02 Ningde | Fujian October is the most comfortable time of year in Ningde; the typhoon season is over, and the sea breeze is crisp. Taimu Mountain's granite peaks paired with the clear autumn sky are stunning. For the "A Thread of Sky" section, you'll really need to turn sideways if you're on the heavier side. ⚠️ The stone steps are slippery after rain, so don't wear flat canvas shoes. The water at Baishuiyang & Yuanyangxi is cold in October, so fewer people go in, making it perfect for a slow walk along the boardwalk to see the crystal-clear stream. The autumn season at Beiqi Mudflat in Xiapu is seaweed season. Starting in October, poles and curtains are set up, filling the sea with lines and buoys. ⏰ The light is softest for half an hour around sunrise, and photographers start claiming spots at 4:00 AM. The mudflats are entirely weather-dependent, so don't force it on cloudy days; head to Sansha Town for seafood instead—baby squid and mudskippers are in season. Staying at a homestay in Dongbi Village saves you the back-and-forth travel from the county seat, and you can watch the sunset directly from your balcony. 🚄 It takes about 40 minutes by taxi from Xiapu Station to Dongbi. 03 Huangshan | Anhui From mid-October to early November, Huangshan is at its most colorful, with layers of maple, Chinese tallow, and Huangshan pine, and the probability of seeing a sea of clouds is higher than in summer. I recommend visiting the ancient villages of Southern Anhui—Xidi & Hongcun—on separate days. Hongcun's South Lake looks like an ink wash painting in the morning mist, while Xidi is quieter, with archways and alleys better suited for a slow stroll. ⚠️ Tickets for both villages require real-name booking; please check official daily announcements. The Ancient Huizhou Culture Tourism Zone connects Shexian Ancient City and the Tangyue Archway Group, which is great for those interested in Huizhou-style architecture; if you're just there for photos, you can skip it. Chengkan Ancient Village is laid out according to the Bagua; the "sun-drying crops" (shaiqiu) by Yongxing Lake are in full swing in October, with chili peppers and corn covering bamboo trays, and it's quieter than Hongcun. Queues for the cable car at Huangshan Scenic Area are long, so I recommend going up the back mountain and down the front. 🚄 It's about a 1-hour drive from Huangshan North Station to Tangkou. Accommodation on the mountain is expensive, but it's worth staying one night if you want to see the sunrise. 04 Shaoxing | Zhejiang In October, osmanthus flowers bloom all over Shaoxing, and the air on Cangqiao Straight Street is sweet. Lu Xun's Former Residence & Shen Garden is free but requires booking. As for the desk with the word "Early" carved into it at Sanwei Study, ⏰ it's less crowded in the morning, while study tour groups flock there in the afternoon. The night tour at Shen Garden features Yue opera segments; if you prefer quiet, just go during the day. Lan Ting is in the suburbs, and the autumn colors in the bamboo forest near the Goose Pond and the Winding Stream are beautiful. It's suitable for a slow walk with elderly family members. 🚄 It takes about 30 minutes by taxi from the city center. Anchang Ancient Town is more low-key than Wuzhen; in October, they start drying sausages and soy sauce ducks, which hang all along the riverside corridors. 🍜 The soy sauce and pulled sugar from Renchang Soy Sauce Factory are worth bringing home. After 4:00 PM, the tourists disperse, and staying overnight is the only way to experience the quiet of the early morning. You can try the rice wine milk tea, but don't treat it as a meal. 05 Guangzhou | Guangdong October in Guangzhou is finally not stuffy; there's a breeze morning and evening, and short sleeves are just right for the day. I recommend going up the Canton Tower in the evening; ⏰ if you go up half an hour before sunset, you can see the daytime, twilight, and night views all at once. ⚠️ The Ferris wheel and Drop Tower cost extra, so don't force it if you're afraid of heights. The brick and wood carvings at Chen Clan Ancestral Hall are worth a close look; the light is clearest in the morning when it shines down from the skylight of the Xiguan Mansion. The old town of Liwan is right next door, so you can grab some rice noodle rolls and boat congee on the way. Baiyun Mountain is great for a night hike or a morning climb in October. You can see the city's sea of lights from Moxing Ridge, and the steps are gentle enough for children. The Chimelong Tourist Resort is less crowded in October than during the summer holidays. I recommend entering the Wildlife Park as soon as it opens, taking the small train first, and then walking. 🍜 Food in the park is expensive, so bring your own water and snacks. Metro Line 3 in the city is crowded, so try to travel off-peak. 06 Shuozhou | Shanxi October in Shuozhou is already cool, so you'll need a thin down jacket in the morning and evening. The sky is high and clear, and visibility is the best of the year. Shahukou is an important pass of the Ming Great Wall; in October, the grass turns yellow, and the ruins and beacon towers look particularly rugged in the setting sun. ⏰ The light is best for photos around 3:00 PM or 4:00 PM. It's windy at the pass, so ⚠️ have a hat and scarf ready, and don't just wear a single layer. This area is best for self-driving or chartering a car, as public transport is infrequent. 🚄 It's about a 1-hour drive from Shuozhou Station. There aren't many commercial facilities nearby, so bring enough water and snacks. Those who love the Great Wall and frontier scenery will find it worth it; if you're just looking for a relaxing vacation, you can skip it. There aren't many tourists in October, and it's quiet enough to hear the wind passing through the battlements. 07 Weihai | Shandong The sea breeze in Weihai turns cool in October, but the seawater looks even bluer, and there are far fewer tourists than in summer. Chengshantou is the easternmost point of the coastline. ⏰ Wear a thick jacket for sunrise, as the sea breeze can cut right through you. ⚠️ The battery car in the scenic area costs extra, but the boardwalk isn't actually that far. Huaxia City is more of a cultural attraction and is suitable for children; the schedule for the landscape performance changes in October, so check official daily announcements. Take a boat to Liugong Island; the exhibitions related to the Jiawu War are heavy, so take your time. The walking loop on the island takes about 3 hours, and the elderly can take the sightseeing bus. 🍜 For seafood in the city, head to the area near Heqing Pier; mackerel and crab are in season in October, and the prices are more reasonable than in summer. Stay in the Huancui District or near the International Bathing Beach. 🚄 It takes about 20 minutes by taxi from Weihai Station to the city center. 08 Bortala | Xinjiang October in Bortala has already transitioned from autumn to winter. The grasslands around Sayram Lake are golden, and the lake water is a deep blue. The temperature difference between day and night can reach over 10 degrees, so ⚠️ bring both a down jacket and a windbreaker. Driving around the lake is the most comfortable way to travel. ⏰ The light is best in the morning, making the lake look like a mirror, while the afternoon backlight makes it hard to get clear photos. The red layers of the Anjihai Grand Canyon are at their most intense in the autumn sunset. There are no railings on the cliff edge, so ⚠️ don't get too close to the edge for photos. There's a possibility of early snow in Wenquan County in October, with grasslands and snow-capped mountains in the same frame, which is perfect for those who like quiet. 🚄 It's about a 1.5-hour drive from Bole Station to Sayram Lake. Public transport in this area is weak, so self-driving or chartering a car is the only comfortable way to go. Some road sections may be restricted due to snowfall in late October, so check the latest road conditions before you set off. These 8 places for October to November all share the same traits: off-season prices, fewer crowds, and perfect autumn scenery. If you want a hassle-free trip, choose Huangshan and Shaoxing; if you want to see the sea, choose Ningde plus Weihai; if you want to go further, the late autumn in Bortala is worth gambling on the weather. Tell me in the comments which one you want to visit first.

For this trip to Xinjiang, I specifically picked a spot from the Trip.com "Bortala Night Tour Must-Visit List" to check out, and I chose Sayram Lake. Honestly, as a super popular daytime scenic spot, I was quite curious why it was on a night tour list at first, but I ended up having an unexpectedly great time. Regarding the "night tour," I give it 1 point—not because it's bad, but because nights in Xinjiang are just so unique🌙. I arrived in the morning and didn't leave until after 8:00 PM, but because of the time difference in Xinjiang compared to the rest of the country, it was still bright out after 8:00 PM. So, strictly speaking, there were no lights or night scenery open, so it doesn't really count as a "night tour." But this little twist doesn't affect its 5-star status in my heart at all! Since it was also on another list, the "Autumn Viewing List," I give it 5 points! Sayram Lake in autumn is breathtakingly beautiful, with stunning scenery, excellent comfort, well-distributed crowds, and great seasonal suitability. The core experience is absolutely top-notch, and the impact of the natural landscape will stay with you forever. Let's focus on my actual experience and practical tips‼️ I went in April, when there was still snow on the lake that hadn't fully melted. When the sky was clear, every shot was a masterpiece📸. Can you imagine? Taking photos in the snow while wearing a summer dress—that contrast is amazing! The sun in Xinjiang in April is fantastic, and the cold air doesn't really affect you, so taking photos for a short time is totally fine. 🔹 Clothing advice: Bright colors are the best choice; red or white dresses look super photogenic against the blue lake and snow-capped mountains. 🔹 Notes: I don't recommend rushing blindly around the lake. Prepare dry food and water before you go, as there aren't many places to eat in the scenic area, so bringing your own snacks is safer. 🔹 Pace: Leave at least half a day. Taking it slow and stopping along the way is the right way to experience Sayram Lake. Although it might not be suitable for a night tour, Sayram Lake is definitely worth a special trip during the day. I would recommend it to all my friends with a 5-star rating without hesitation! If you want to go to Xinjiang and experience that ultimate natural beauty, don't miss this destination.

Autumn airfare and hotel prices are finally reasonable. Here are 8 lesser-known cities where you can have a great trip for CNY 500 per person. Stop crowding popular spots; head to these cities instead for scenery that doesn't compromise and a wallet that won't cry. 1️⃣ Bortala | Xinjiang ⏰ From early October to November, Sayram Lake enters its quietest and clearest period of the year. The lake surface is a cold blue, the grass on the shore turns yellow, and the snow line in the distance lowers. It's windy, and the temperature feels much lower than in the city, so bring enough windbreakers and fleece jackets. 📍 The loop road around the lake is suitable for self-driving or chartered cars; public transport is infrequent, so carpooling is more cost-effective. The red layers of Anjihai Grand Canyon are most vibrant in the autumn sun, but there are no railings on the cliff edge, so don't get too close when taking photos. 🍜 The cold-water fish and dairy products in Wenquan County are worth trying, and accommodation in the county is much cheaper than by the lake. ⚠️ Some service points in the lake area will close after October. Confirm the operating status before you go, and check official daily announcements for ticket prices and entry requirements. Bole, Bortala 2️⃣ Yanbian | Jilin October in Yanbian is a hidden gem for autumn colors in Northeast China, with fewer tourists than in summer and lower prices than in winter. Liuding Mountain Cultural Tourism Zone is the main destination; the forests start changing colors in late October, creating a mix of gold and red that offers a beautiful view from the heights. 🚄 Take the high-speed train to Dunhua Station, then it's about a 20-minute taxi ride to the scenic area, which saves time compared to coming from Yanji. The area is large, so sightseeing cars can save your legs; elderly people and children are advised to take them. 🍜 Cold noodles and barbecue in downtown Dunhua are local staples, and you can eat well for CNY 40–50 per person. ⚠️ It's windy on the mountain, and the temperature difference between day and night increases after October, so a light down jacket is more useful than a windbreaker. Yanbian, Jilin 3️⃣ Guiyang | Guizhou Autumn in Guiyang is understated but wins on affordability and relaxation. The combination of caves and waterfalls at Tianhetan is perfect for half a day, the Ming and Qing dynasty stone alleys of Qingyan Ancient Town are great for strolling, and the grass at Gaopo Yunding Grassland turns yellow in October—windmills against the sunset make for easy photos. 🚄 City buses and the subway cover most spots. For Gaopo, self-driving or carpooling is recommended as bus travel takes too long. Huaxi Park is great for a morning walk; it's mostly locals, few tourists, and free. 🍜 Braised pig trotters and rose candy are the signature dishes of Qingyan, but prices in the ancient town are on the high side, so it's more practical to walk deeper into the alleys. ⚠️ Gaopo is at a higher altitude, and it's windy with a large temperature difference after October, so don't skimp on a jacket. Tianhetan Tourist Resort 4️⃣ Fuyang | Anhui Fuyang is an underrated transit city, and Balihe is its showcase. From October to November, the reeds in the lake area turn yellow and migratory birds begin to gather. Taking a boat through the area is more interesting than walking, and the ticket combo including the boat ride is more cost-effective. 📍 Balihe is divided into several sections like the Bird Forest and Jinxiu China. You can finish it in one day, but don't be too greedy; picking two highlights is enough. 🚄 Both Fuyang Station and Fuyang West Station have buses to the scenic area, or a taxi costs about CNY 40. 🍜 Gelatiao (local noodles) and pillow buns in the city are local ways to eat, which are cheap and filling. ⚠️ Some performances in the lake area are seasonally suspended, so check the daily schedule before you leave. Fuyang Station 5️⃣ Chengdu | Sichuan Chengdu itself isn't exactly "niche," but October to November is its window for value. The autumn leaves at Tiantai Mountain are at their best in early November. Mount Qingcheng and Dujiangyan are suitable for a one-day combined trip, the Republic of China-era streets of Anren Ancient Town are quiet, and the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding is least crowded in the morning. ⏰ It's recommended to arrive at the Panda Base before 7:30 AM, or you'll only see crowds. The front mountain of Mount Qingcheng has many Taoist temples, while the back mountain is more for hiking; choose according to your stamina. 🍜 Intestine blood curd and landlord pork ribs in Anren Ancient Town are local flavors, and prices are lower than in the city. ⚠️ Some sections of Tiantai Mountain are slippery after November, so anti-slip shoes are more important than looking good. Ticket prices and reservation rules are subject to official daily announcements. Panda Valley 6️⃣ Yueyang | Hunan In October, Yueyang Tower and Dongting Lake enter their most comfortable viewing period. The water level recedes, the river surface is wide, and you don't have to squeeze through summer crowds to climb the tower and see the lake. The autumn tea and spotted bamboo of Junshan Island are special features; the island isn't large, so half a day is enough. 🚄 A taxi from Yueyang Station to Yueyang Tower costs about CNY 15, and buses are also convenient. 📍 Yueyang Tower Scenic Area is connected to Bianhe Street, so you can eat Dongting Lake fish and shrimp on your way after visiting. 🍜 Crayfish and fish head on Bianhe Street are signature dishes, but the quality of crayfish declines after October, so ordering fish is a safer bet. ⚠️ Boat trips to Junshan Island are affected by weather, so confirm if they are operating normally before you leave. Bianhe Street 7️⃣ Suqian | Jiangsu The Hongze Lake Wetland in Suqian is a low-key winner from October to November. The reed marshes turn white and migratory birds migrate south; taking a boat into the wetland allows you to see more birds than walking. The scenic area is large, so the combination of sightseeing car and boat is the most effortless. 🚄 A taxi from Suqian Station to the wetland takes about half an hour; bus service is infrequent, so taking a taxi directly is recommended. 📍 Dining options around the wetland are limited, so bringing your own food and water is safer. 🍜 Huanggou pig head meat and wheel cakes in the city are local flavors; eat them when you return to the city. ⚠️ The wetland is windy and has little shade, so a hat and scarf are more practical than sunscreen after October. Suqian, Jiangsu 8️⃣ Jiayuguan | Gansu October in Jiayuguan is the king of cost-effectiveness for budget travel in Northwest China. The pass city has a rugged silhouette in the autumn sun, with half as many tourists as in summer, and prices for tickets and accommodation have fallen. Looking at the Qilian Mountain snow line from the city wall, it's windy but the view is clear. 🚄 A taxi from Jiayuguan Station to the pass city costs about CNY 20, and buses are also available. 📍 The pass city, Overhanging Great Wall, and First Pier of the Great Wall can be visited in one day; chartering a car is more worry-free than taking the bus. 🍜 Barbecue and cuoyuzi (local noodles) in the city are local ways to eat, and you can get full for CNY 30 per person. ⚠️ The temperature difference between day and night can exceed 15 degrees after October; it's sunny at noon and cold in the morning and evening, so a jacket that is easy to put on and take off is most practical. Jiayuguan Station These 8 small cities are less crowded, cheaper, and have great scenery from October to November. Pick two or three to visit in a row; it's more comfortable than crowding into one popular spot. Which one do you want to visit first?

Sayram Lake (the "Last Tear of the Atlantic") 🌊 really lives up to its name! Located in Bortala, Xinjiang, right next to the G30 Lianyungang–Horgos Expressway, it is best visited as part of a route connecting Yining/Guozigou/Sayram Lake/Bole. 🚗 🗓️ **When is the best time to visit?** · June–August: The lake is an incredible shade of blue 💙 with grasslands, wildflowers, and swans, but it is very crowded and hotel prices skyrocket · September–October: Autumn colors and a blue lake, with fewer crowds and great photo ops! Now (mid-October) is the tail end of the peak season/autumn scenery period—don't miss it or you will have to wait another year 🍂 · December–February: Blue ice, ice bubbles, and spectacular frozen lake views that will leave you speechless ❄️ It is freezing, so some sections require 4WD and snow chains · April–May: The ice begins to melt and wild swans return. This transition season offers great value ✨ 🎫 **Tickets/Self-driving (2026 reference)** · Adult ticket: CNY 70/person in peak season, CNY 35 in off-season · Shuttle bus: Approx. CNY 75/person · Self-driving service fee: CNY 120/vehicle for 5 seats or fewer (passengers must purchase a separate CNY 70 ticket); CNY 180/vehicle for 6–7 seats · Official channels: WeChat mini-program "Sayram Lake Tourism"/official stores on major platforms ⚠️ Do not trust scalpers selling "internal tickets" or private WeChat transfers! · If self-driving, remember to register your license plate in advance. Enter via the East/North Gate; the South Gate is usually exit-only · The lake loop is about 90 km with low speed limits. You can only park at official spots—never drive on the grasslands 🈲 📍**Address**: Dalete Town, Bole City, Bortala Mongol Autonomous Prefecture, Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region 🕒 **Opening hours**: Open all year round, 24/7—come whenever you like! 🎯 **Recommended itinerary** · *1) One-day self-driving highlights (most popular)** Enter via East Gate → Moon Bay (stunning reflection of snow-capped mountains 🏔️) → Qinshuitan (watch swans 🦢) → Keleyongzhu (spring water + swans, best visited in the morning) → Xihai Grassland → Viral S-bend → Songshutou (Sayram Lake + Guozigou Bridge in one frame 📸) → Dianjiangtai (panoramic view of the lake/sunset 🌅) → Exit via South Gate → Take photos at Guozigou Bridge Takes 5–8 hours—don't rush! Taking photos really takes a lot of time 📷 · *2) Two-day in-depth tour (best for photography/stargazing enthusiasts)** · Day 1: Enter via East Gate in the afternoon, photograph the west bank + sunset at Dianjiangtai, stay inside the scenic area/near the East Gate · Day 2: Sunrise at Moon Bay, watch swans at Keleyongzhu, visit Songshutou, exit via South Gate at noon, and head to Yining/Huocheng · *3) For non-drivers** Purchase the "ticket + shuttle bus" package. It is convenient for stopping at designated stations, but you cannot stop whenever you want, and it is easy to miss the last bus around sunset ⚠️ 🏨 **Where to stay** · Inside the scenic area: RVs/yurts/lake-view hotels. Best for sunrise and stargazing. A bit pricey in peak season (several hundred to over a thousand CNY), so book in advance! · Near East Gate/Jinghai Road: Many homestays, convenient dining, good value 🉑 · Qingshuihe Town/Huocheng: Cheaper, convenient for visiting lavender fields and Guozigou, but you will need to wake up early for sunrise · Bole City: Better facilities and stable prices, 1.5–2 hours from the scenic area 🍽️ **What to eat** · Sayram Lake Coregonus (steamed/pan-fried is the best 🐟), hand-grabbed meat, baked buns, pilaf, salty milk tea, and baursak · Dining inside the scenic area is expensive; bring your own water/snacks/self-heating meals · For a comfortable meal: Eat well in Bole, Yining, or Qingshuihe Town before entering the lake! ⚠️ **Tips & gear** · Altitude is about 2,000m, so don't run around 🏃‍♀️ It is very windy by the lake, so bring a windbreaker or light down jacket, even in summer! · UV rays are extremely strong: Bring sunglasses, a hat, SPF 50+ sunscreen, and lip balm · Fill up your gas/charge your car before entering the scenic area; there are basically no gas stations on the 90 km lake loop ⛽ · Remember to register your drone at the East Gate police station · Do not climb over fences to enter the water, do not drive on the grass, and do not trust "free entry fast tracks" · Wear red, white, or light blue clothing—it matches the lake perfectly and doubles your photo quality~ 🗺️ **Classic route (Western Xinjiang line)** Yining → Huocheng (lavender in June–July 💜) → Guozigou Bridge → Sayram Lake (best to stay 1 night) → Bole/Urumqi Or Urumqi → Kuitun → Sayram Lake → Yining → Nalati/Qiaxi/Kuerdening In short, Sayram Lake is the kind of place that "heals you for a year with just one look" 💙 With people walking by the lake, blue skies, and clear water, every photo you take is screen-saver quality! Go for it!

There are two things you fear most when traveling in summer: spending a lot, and crowds so packed you question your life. Here are 8 places that are cool, affordable, and not crowded, great for anyone who wants a quiet few days. 1️⃣ Xining | Qinghai Summer in Xining feels cool. In July and August daytime temperatures are just over 20°C, so bring a light jacket for mornings and evenings and you hardly need air conditioning. 📍 Ta'er Temple is in Huangzhong district. You can get there by taxi or bus from downtown. Visit in the morning when the light on the golden roof and butter sculptures looks best. ⚠️ Photos are not allowed inside the halls. Shorts or short skirts may be stopped at the entrance, so change into long pants beforehand. 📍 Dongguan Grand Mosque is in Chengdong district. Evenings are a good time to go. Non-worshippers can’t enter the main prayer hall during prayer times, but the courtyard is quiet for a walk. 🍜 Nearby alleys sell niangpi and sweet fermented rice, a few yuan a bowl and more honest than stalls at the attraction entrance. Good for travelers who don't want a rushed itinerary. Use Xining as a base to visit Qinghai Lake and Menyuan, but one day in the city is enough — don't overbook. 2️⃣ Ningde | Fujian Ningde squeezes sea and mountains together, with two main ways to explore. Don’t expect to do everything in one day. 📍 Taimu Mountain in Fuding has granite peaks and mist. Go early when the fog hasn't lifted — photos look like ink wash paintings. ⚠️ There are many steps on the mountain. Wear non-slip shoes; the rocks get slippery after rain. 📍 Baishuijiang · Yuanyang Creek in Pingnan lets you paddle barefoot in summer. In shallow spots the water reaches the ankles, making it child-friendly. ⏰ The water feels comfortable after 3 PM; at noon it's scorching. 📍 Watch the sunrise at Beiqi mudflats in Xiapu. People start setting up tripods around 4 AM. The light on the mudflats changes with the tide, so don't expect a masterpiece every day — stay relaxed. 🍜 Xiapu town has many seafood stalls; ask the price before you order. Good for photography enthusiasts and families with kids. Driving is recommended; public transport transfers take time. 3️⃣ Tai'an | Shandong Mount Tai isn't off the beaten path, but most people only climb the mountain and miss the city. Tai'an downtown is worth a half day. 📍 Hongmen Road is the classic hiking start. Night climbs to watch sunrise draw crowds, but daytime hikes are relatively quiet. ⏰ Try to start before 7 AM and reach Zhongtian Gate before noon to avoid tour groups. ⚠️ Cable car lines can be 1–2 hours long on holidays. If you have the energy, hike the 18 Bends; otherwise, take the cable car from Zhongtian Gate. Temperatures vary at the summit, so bring a jacket even in summer. 🍜 After descending, try a bowl of coarse porridge soup with a pancake near Tongtian Street — that's a local breakfast. Mount Tai ticket and cable car prices follow the official on-the-day announcements. Suitable for people with moderate to good fitness. Elderly people and children should use the cable car up and down, don't force the climb. 4️⃣ Zhuzhou | Hunan Zhuzhou is often a transfer stop, but the Yandi Mausoleum is worth a separate visit. 📍 Yandi Mausoleum is in Yanling County, over two hours by car from Zhuzhou. Driving or joining a local day tour is recommended. ⏰ Visit in the morning when it's less crowded and the sacrificial area is peaceful. ⚠️ The mausoleum area is large and involves a lot of walking. Wear comfortable shoes and bring insect repellent — there are many mosquitoes in summer. 🍜 Yanling is known for yellow peaches and cured pork. Yellow peaches are in season in July and August, and roadside stalls are cheaper than those inside the scenic area. Good for people interested in cultural sites. If you're only after natural scenery, you can skip it — don't visit just for the check-in photo. 5️⃣ Huanggang | Hubei The Dabie Mountains around Huanggang are a great summer retreat, with two spots that focus on different strengths. 📍 Tiantangzhai in Luotian has a high main peak. It's several degrees cooler on the mountain than at the foot, and the waterfall clusters have good flow. ⏰ It's best after rain when there's more moisture, but watch your step — the stairs get slippery. 📍 Guifeng Mountain in Macheng is famous for azaleas in April and comfortable greenery in summer. ⚠️ Flower season attracts crowds; outside flower season it's much quieter — pick according to your preference. 🍜 Luotian chestnuts and Macheng meat cakes are local specialties. Small county restaurants often taste better than scenic-area eateries. Driving is recommended; it's about a 1.5-hour drive between the two spots. Good for people who want to escape the heat without going too far. It's about 2 hours from Wuhan. 6️⃣ Changzhou | Jiangsu Changzhou is an underrated city with both theme parks and natural scenery, suitable for families and solo travelers. 📍 Tianmu Lake in Liyang has clear water and boat rides in summer. ⏰ An evening walk by the lake is cool and pleasant; daytime can be sunny. ⚠️ Food inside attractions tends to be expensive, so bring water. 📍 Chunqiu Yancheng tourist area in Wujin combines ruins with a theme park — good for kids. 📍 Global Dinosaur City leisure area is dinosaur-themed and popular with children; adults may find it average depending on expectations. 🍜 Try Yinsi noodles and crab xiaolongbao in downtown Changzhou. Old shops are more reliable than mall outlets. Take the high-speed train to Changzhou station; taxis or the metro make it easy to reach other districts. Good for family trips and short weekend getaways. If you want quiet, avoid Dinosaur City — it gets crowded. 7️⃣ Bortala | Xinjiang Bortala Mongol Autonomous Prefecture has a long name and beautiful places. Summer is its best season. 📍 Sayram Lake has unreal blue water. From June to August wildflowers bloom along the shore and the road around the lake is great for driving. ⏰ The lake is calm with clear reflections in the morning; it gets windy at noon. 📍 Anjihai Grand Canyon has red-layered landforms that look great from drone shots and are also impressive up close. ⚠️ There are no guardrails at the canyon edge, so don't get too close. 📍 The mountains and hot springs in Wenquan County are perfect for soaking and slow stays. 🍜 Local hand-grabbed rice and milk tea are everyday staples, and prices in town are more reasonable than at scenic spots. Good for road trips and nature lovers. Xinjiang is vast, so don't pack your schedule too tight — allow time for travel. 8️⃣ Harbin | Heilongjiang Harbin takes its cool seriously. Summers are in the low 20s°C, and winters offer a whole different experience — pick the season you prefer. 📍 Harbin Ice and Snow World is a winter-only attraction, open from late December to February. It looks best at night when the lights come on. ⚠️ Tickets aren't cheap. Bring proper cold-weather gear — phones can shut off from the cold. 📍 Volga Manor features Russian-style buildings and snow scenes that make winter photos atmospheric; in summer it's just an ordinary manor. 📍 Saint Sophia Cathedral is a city landmark — admire the architecture by day and the lights by night. 🍜 Try the ice pops at Central Street and the red sausages. Eating ice pops in winter is a local habit. The metro reaches most city sights, but taxis are hard to get in winter, so book ahead. Best for people who want to see ice and snow in winter. If you don't like the cold, come in summer for cool temperatures and lower prices. These 8 places share the benefits of being less crowded and easier on the wallet. If I had to pick, Xining and Bortala are best for scenery, Changzhou and Harbin are great for families. Which have you been to? Share in the comments.

8 budget-friendly small cities for a National Day getaway with fewer crowds 01 Xuzhou | Jiangsu Yunlong Lake is the easiest choice in Xuzhou. It's free and open all day. The loop around the lake is about 10 km; renting a shared bike is half the effort of walking. ⏰ Go after 4:30 PM when the lake surface starts to shimmer with golden light. Locals come out for walks and to walk their dogs, making the atmosphere livelier than during the day. You can get there by taking Metro Line 1 from Xuzhou Station and transferring to a bus, or take a taxi for under ¥20. There's a dawn redwood forest by the lake that starts changing color in October, so you won't have to fight for a photo spot. ⚠️ Don't eat the big fish head at the lakeside restaurants. Walk 10 minutes toward Hunan Road, where the small eateries in the alleys are half the price. If you're traveling solo, go for a jog around the lake. If you're with seniors, take the sightseeing car—it costs ¥20 for a ride around most of the lake. During the National Day holiday, accommodation in Xuzhou is much cheaper than in southern Jiangsu; you can find chain hotels near the metro for just over ¥100. 02 Xinzhou | Shanxi This Xinzhou route is perfect for those who want to see rugged scenery without spending a fortune. Admission to Yanmenguan Pass is ¥90 during peak season, but there are fewer people in October than in summer. It gets windy enough on the city walls to blow your hat off. ⏰ Visit Yanmenguan Pass in the morning when the light on the fortress is best, then head to Laoniuwan in the afternoon. Laoniuwan is where the Yellow River and the Great Wall meet. Admission is cheap, and cave dwellings in the village cost just over ¥100 per night. 🍜 The wantuo (buckwheat jelly) and stewed lamb in Hequ County are worth a special trip—you can eat your fill for about ¥30 per person. Admission to Mount Wutai Scenic Area is over ¥100, but it's cold enough in October to need a down jacket. Accommodation in Taihuai Town will be more expensive during the holiday, so book in advance. 🚄 There are direct buses from Xinzhou West Station to Mount Wutai; avoid unlicensed taxis. ⚠️ Some temples on Mount Wutai close at 5:00 PM, so plan your time accordingly. This route is best for self-driving, as public transport is a hassle. It's a great National Day trip with fewer crowds, wild scenery, and less strain on your wallet. 03 Panjin | Liaoning The Red Beach Scenic Corridor is an October exclusive; the seepweed is at its reddest around the National Day holiday. Admission plus the sightseeing car costs just over ¥100. It's a bit pricey, but you really can't see this anywhere else. ⏰ Go before 9:00 AM for soft light and fewer crowds; tour groups pile in after noon. The corridor is over 10 km long, so walking isn't realistic. You can get on and off the sightseeing car at every stop. 📍 The Rice Dream Space stop features rice paddy art. In October, the golden rice contrasts with the red beach, making for great photos. ⚠️ Don't eat seafood inside the scenic area—it's expensive and mediocre. Head back to downtown Panjin for river crabs, which are at their fattest during the National Day holiday. A taxi from Panjin Station costs about ¥40, and there's also a tourist shuttle. It's kid-friendly with flat boardwalks suitable for strollers. The seaside is windy in October, so be sure to bring a jacket. 04 Baise | Guangxi Baise is the most underrated of these eight. Haokun Lake is free, and the water is an unreal shade of green. Driving or riding an e-bike around the lake is a blast. ⏰ Go to Haokun Lake early in the morning before the mist clears—it's like walking into a painting. 📍 Walk from the lakeside viewing platform toward the village to find a rice noodle shop that only opens in the morning—it's ¥6 a bowl. Admission to Tongling Grand Canyon is around ¥100. The waterfall still has plenty of water in October, and the canyon floor is cool. There are many steps, so be careful if you have bad knees. Chengbi Lake is best in the afternoon—take a boat or just relax by the shore. It's free. 🚄 It's about a 1-hour drive from Baise Station to Haokun Lake. I recommend chartering a car for ¥300 a day to hit all three spots. ⚠️ Signal is poor inside Tongling Grand Canyon, so download offline maps in advance. Accommodation in Baise is cheap during the holiday; you can get a nice place in the city for ¥150. It's perfect for those on a tight budget who want to see mountains and water. 05 Lanzhou | Gansu Lanzhou is a budget-friendly city. The Provincial Museum is free, but you need to book in advance. Slots are popular during the National Day holiday, so set an alarm. 📍 The Yellow River is right across from the museum. After your visit, take a walk along the river—the Waterwheel Expo Park is also free. Admission to Baita Mountain Park is just a few yuan. Hike up for a panoramic view of Zhongshan Bridge and the Yellow River. ⏰ Go in the evening—the moment the lights come on is worth the price of admission. 🍜 Eat beef noodles in the morning. Shops frequented by locals are usually safe bets—¥8 a bowl, or under ¥20 with extra meat and egg. It's just a few bus stops from Lanzhou Station to Zhongshan Bridge, or a minimum-fare taxi ride. ⚠️ Just take a look at Zhengning Road Night Market. For food, head to Dazhong Lane for authentic and cheap milk egg fermented rice and gray bean soup. Lanzhou is a great first stop for a Northwest loop, and you won't spend much staying for two days. 06 Nanyang | Henan The Xixia Funiu Mountain Laojieling Dinosaur Relics Park tourist area has a long name, but it's enough for a full day of fun. The Dinosaur Relics Park is great for kids—real dinosaur egg fossils are on display, and admission is just a few dozen yuan. The red leaves at Laojieling start changing color in October. The cable car costs extra, so if you're fit, I recommend hiking. ⏰ Go to the Dinosaur Park in the morning to avoid the sun indoors, then head to Laojieling in the afternoon when the light is better. 📍 There are shuttle buses from Xixia County to the scenic area, but they are infrequent. Self-driving is the most convenient. ⚠️ Food on the mountain is expensive and unappetizing, so bring your own snacks. 🍜 Back in downtown Nanyang, grab a bowl of spicy soup (hulatang) with fried dough for ¥10. Accommodation in Nanyang during the National Day holiday is much cheaper than in Luoyang or Zhengzhou; you can stay comfortably for just over ¥100. It's suitable for seniors and kids, and you can take it slow. 07 Bortala | Xinjiang Sayram Lake is the highlight of this route. Admission plus the lake loop bus is over ¥100, but it's cold enough to be around 0°C by the lake in October, so you must bring a down jacket. ⏰ Enter the lake area in the morning when the reflection of the snow-capped mountains is clearest; it gets windy and choppy after noon. Anjihai Grand Canyon is free. The red cliffs against the blue sky don't need filters for photos. 📍 There are no railings in the canyon, so don't get too close to the edge—the wind is strong enough to knock you over. The scenery in Wenquan County is perfect for ending your trip with a hot spring soak, and accommodation is cheaper than in the lake area. 🚄 It's about a 1.5-hour drive from Bortala Station to Sayram Lake; I recommend chartering a car. ⚠️ Accommodation around Sayram Lake is tight during the National Day holiday, so book in advance or stay in downtown Bole. This route is for experienced drivers—public transport is a hassle, but the scenery is definitely worth the gas money. 08 Tangshan | Hebei Admission to the Eastern Qing Tombs is over ¥100, but there are few people in October, making the walk along the Sacred Way with its stone statues solemn and quiet. ⏰ Visit the Eastern Qing Tombs in the morning when the light hits the halls at an angle, adding depth to your photos. 📍 It's about a 1.5-hour drive from downtown Tangshan; I recommend self-driving or carpooling. Nanhu-Kailuan is a free city park and industrial heritage site. Nanhu is huge, so rent a bike to explore. Some exhibition halls in the Kailuan National Mine Park charge admission; visit based on your interest. ⚠️ The electric carts inside the Eastern Qing Tombs cost extra, but it's not actually that far to walk. 🍜 Try Tangshan's qizi shaobing (chess-shaped biscuits) and gezhahuo (fried pancake rolls) as snacks—they're a dozen yuan per serving. Accommodation in Tangshan is cheap during the National Day holiday; you can stay very well for under ¥200. It's suitable for taking seniors to the Eastern Qing Tombs and kids to Nanhu—a day and a half is just right. These eight places offer a lot to see for little money during the National Day holiday. Pick one near you, book your tickets, and go. Which one have you been to, or which route would you like me to detail? Let's chat in the comments.

Want to avoid the National Day crowds? These 8️⃣ top-rated hidden gems are tried, tested, and stress-free 01 Jiangmen | Guangdong Kaiping Diaolou Cultural Tourism Zone is worth spending an entire afternoon at. ⏰ After 4:00 PM, the light hits the facades of the diaolou at an angle, making them look 10 times better than at noon, with half the crowds. Zili Village has the densest cluster of diaolou. You can climb to the top of Mingshi Tower, but the stairs are narrow, so it's recommended that seniors with knee issues wait below. 📍 There are small creative shops near Tangkou Space where you can sit down for a tangerine peel coffee when you're tired of walking. 🚄 It takes about 1 hour by taxi from Jiangmen Station. Driving yourself is more convenient, as getting between villages without a car is difficult. ⚠️ Don't trust roadside touts offering shortcuts to avoid tickets. The diaolou are scattered, and taking unofficial paths will just leave you exhausted from the sun. For accommodation, choose the Tangkou or Chikan area so you can get to the villages before the crowds arrive. It's great for couples and photographers. Families are welcome, but pushing a stroller on the stone paths will be a nightmare. 02 Baishan | Jilin Changbai Mountain is a game of luck during the National Day holiday. Whether the Heavenly Lake is open depends entirely on the wind that day; it took me 2 trips to see it once. ⏰ The North Slope has the most people but the best facilities. The West Slope has fewer stairs and wider views, making it easier for seniors. 📍 Queues at the mountain gate start at 7:00 AM, so it's recommended to stay in Erdaobaihe Town the night before. 🍜 The iron pot stew and Korean-style cold noodles in town are hearty. Don't eat inside the scenic area; it's expensive and mediocre. ⚠️ The temperature at the summit is 10 degrees lower than at the base. A windbreaker is essential, or you can rent a coat, though the lines are long. Try the hot spring boiled eggs for a novelty; the egg white is as tender as tofu. It's suitable for those willing to wake up early for the scenery; if you hate the cold or waiting in line, reconsider. 03 Beijing The Forbidden City, Summer Palace, Temple of Heaven, and Beihai Park—put these 4 together during the National Day holiday, and you're looking at massive crowds. My advice is not to overdo it; limit yourself to 2 per day. ⏰ You must book tickets for the Forbidden City 7 days in advance. If you can't get them, don't force it; go boating in Beihai Park instead for a more relaxing time. 📍 The Temple of Heaven opens at 6:30 AM. Watching local seniors practice Tai Chi is even more vivid than the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests. Enter the Summer Palace from the North Palace Gate, cross Longevity Hill, and take a boat to Nanhu Island to avoid half the queues and wasted walking compared to the East Palace Gate. 🚄 Subway lines 4 and 8 can cover most of your itinerary, so don't drive. ⚠️ All venues are closed on Mondays, so plan your itinerary carefully. If you have children, focus on Beihai and the Temple of Heaven, as there's plenty of space for them to run around. The Forbidden City is for those obsessed with architecture; otherwise, a 2-hour whirlwind tour will leave your legs exhausted. 04 Bortala | Xinjiang The blue of Sayram Lake is something photos can't capture even a tenth of. ⏰ By the National Day holiday, the grass has turned yellow, but the lake water is even clearer. In the afternoon, the backlight makes it look like scattered silver. 📍 Driving around the lake takes about 2 hours. Enter from the East Gate and exit from the South Gate; don't block the entrance to take photos. You can visit the Anjihai Grand Canyon on the way, but there are no railings on the cliff edge, so ⚠️ hold children's hands tightly. The landscapes of Wenquan County are perfect for slowing down and staying a night. The town is small, and it's so quiet at night you can hear the wind. 🍜 Hand-grabbed mutton and milk tea will keep you full. The flavors are strong, so bring medicine if you have a sensitive stomach. 🚄 Bole has flights and trains, but the distances between attractions are large, so chartering a car or driving is a must. It's suitable for those who love open spaces and aren't rushing; those just looking to check off spots will be disappointed. 05 Tangshan | Hebei The Eastern Qing Tombs and Nanhu/Kailuan are in the suburbs and city center respectively, so don't plan them for the same day. The Sacred Way of the Eastern Qing Tombs is very peaceful to walk along; ⏰ it's most atmospheric in the morning when the mist hasn't cleared. 📍 You can go down into the Yuling Underground Palace, but the steps are steep and slippery, so seniors should assess their ability. Nanhu Park is free and popular with locals for evening strolls. Kailuan National Mine Park is great for taking children to see industrial heritage. 🍜 The Qizi sesame seed cakes and Gezha in the city are worth a try. Don't buy them at the scenic area entrance; walk a few steps into the residential area for cheaper prices. ⚠️ The Eastern Qing Tombs are huge, and walking will exhaust you, so take the shuttle bus when you can. Staying in the city is more convenient, and transfers near Tangshan Station are quick. It's suitable for those interested in historical architecture; those looking for pure amusement parks will find it boring. 06 Haibei | Qinghai Qilian Mountains, Heihe Grand Canyon, Lenglongling, Amisong—just saying these names sounds like poetry. By the National Day holiday, the Qilian grasslands have turned completely yellow, making the snow-capped mountains stand out even more clearly. ⏰ Start from Qilian County in the morning to watch the sunrise at Zhuoer Mountain; the light hitting the Danxia landform looks like an overturned palette. 📍 The roadside viewing platforms at Heihe Grand Canyon are enough; no need for deep hiking. The Amisong scenic area is at a high altitude, so ⚠️ walk slowly, don't jump around, and use oxygen if you get a headache. 🍜 The yogurt and hand-grabbed rice in the county are hearty. Tibetan food tends to be sour, so order less if it's your first time. 🚄 It's about a 3-hour drive from Xining. Driving is the most flexible option, but the mountain roads are winding, so return to the county before dark. It's suitable for those in good physical condition who love plateau scenery; seniors and children should be cautious. 07 Nyingchi | Tibet Bomi, Basum Lake, the Yunnan-Tibet Highway, and the Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon—the beauty of Nyingchi seeps in slowly. There's less rain during the National Day holiday, so the chances of seeing Namcha Barwa are higher than in summer. ⏰ Basum Lake is misty in the early morning, making the island in the center look like it's floating. After 10:00 AM, the mist clears and it becomes ordinary, so you must get up early. 📍 Suosong Village is the classic spot to view Namcha Barwa; staying in the village is more worthwhile than staying in Bayi Town. The Bomi section of the Yunnan-Tibet Highway features autumn forests and snow-capped mountains; self-driving travelers shouldn't miss it. ⚠️ The shuttle bus in the Grand Canyon scenic area has long queues, so bring dry rations. 🚄 Nyingchi has an airport, and it's about a 5-hour drive from Lhasa via the expressway. It's suitable for those who can handle long car rides and aren't in a rush. Altitude sickness varies from person to person; don't shower or drink alcohol on the first night. 08 Chuzhou | Anhui Langya Mountain is very close to downtown Chuzhou, making it suitable for a half-day trip. ⏰ Enter the mountain before 8:00 AM; the air is cool, and there's no one fighting for photo spots at the Zuiweng Pavilion. 📍 Enter from the North Gate, walk along the stream to Shenxiu Lake, and then head up to Nantian Gate. The whole trip takes about 3 hours, and the steps aren't too brutal. ⚠️ There are few supply points on the mountain, so bring your own water. 🍜 After coming down the mountain, go to the city to eat Langya crispy candy and Chuzhou tribute goose; local eateries are more authentic than those at the scenic area entrance. It's suitable for taking parents for a slow walk or for some alone time. Tickets aren't expensive, but parking is tight during holidays, so taking a taxi is more stress-free. For the National Day holiday, just pick 2 or 3 of these places to combine. Don't overdo it; slow down, and you'll be able to hold onto the scenery. Which one do you want to visit most? Let me know in the comments. and National Day Holiday

Photos can never capture even a fraction of the awe-inspiring beauty of Sayram Lake. This tear of the Atlantic, left behind in the Tianshan Mountains, spreads out in shifting shades of blue. The crystal-clear water meets the distant horizon, with snow-capped mountains standing quietly on the opposite shore and clouds floating low above the lake. A refreshing breeze sweeps across the meadows, stirring up shimmering ripples. Standing on the vast lakeshore, all your worries seem to be swallowed up by this endless blue. - 📍Bortala, Sayram Lake

When choosing a travel destination for older relatives, the core criteria are: less climbing, less hassle, and good value. The following 8 destinations offer a slow pace and impressive scenery. ⏰ Please check official announcements for the latest information on blooming seasons, ticket prices, and opening hours before you depart. 1️⃣ Bortala | Xinjiang Sayram Lake is best enjoyed over an entire morning. It's windy by the lake, so pack a light jacket for your parents, even in summer. You don't need to walk the entire loop; just stop at two or three observation decks to take in the view. 📍 The area east of the lake has wide-open views and is easy to walk around for photos. Anjihai Grand Canyon is best visited in the afternoon when the light hits the ravines to reveal their layers. Keep seniors away from areas without railings near the cliff edge, and ⚠️ make sure they are steady before taking out their phones when it's windy. Wenquan County is a great place to stay overnight; soak in the hot springs to relax before continuing your journey the next day. For transportation, hiring a car or joining a small tour group is recommended. The distances between spots in Bortala are significant, and public transport isn't very convenient for seniors. 🍜 You can try the local milk tea and hand-grabbed meat, but avoid overly greasy meals. Best visited from June to September; temperature fluctuations are greater in other months. 2️⃣ Wenshan | Yunnan The most comfortable way to experience Puzhehei is by boat. ⏰ Start early in the morning when the mist hasn't cleared; the light is soft and there are fewer crowds. The boat ride is smooth, so parents can just sit back and enjoy the mountain and water views without having to climb. 📍 The area around Qinglong Mountain Pier is convenient for boarding and disembarking, with plenty of dining and accommodation options nearby. The lotus flowers bloom in summer, making the lake look its best. ⚠️ Book boat tickets in advance during peak season; waiting in line on-site can be exhausting for seniors. A two-day, one-night trip is ideal. Spend the first day boating and exploring the village, and sleep in the next day before heading back. 🍜 Lotus leaf scrambled eggs and local rice noodles are light and easy to eat. June to August is the lotus season, but it's also the rainy season, so bring an umbrella. 3️⃣ Fuzhou | Jiangxi Dajue Mountain is great because you don't have to do any strenuous climbing. There's a cable car to go up, and you can choose a slide to come down, making it manageable even for parents with average stamina. ⏰ Enter the mountain early in the morning, as it tends to get foggy in the afternoon. 📍 The path from the upper cable car station to Dajueyan Temple is flat and suitable for a leisurely walk. ⚠️ The slide may not be suitable for seniors with lumbar issues, so choose based on their physical condition. The temperature in the mountains is a few degrees lower than in the city, making it a perfect summer retreat. There are shuttle buses from Fuzhou city to Zixi Dajue Mountain, or you can take a taxi or ride-share. 🍜 Local rice noodles and crockpot soup are affordable and filling. Best visited from May to October; the mountains are damp and cold in winter, so it's not recommended for seniors to stay long. 4️⃣ Zhenjiang | Jiangsu Jinshan, Jiaoshan, and Beigushan are not very high, but climbing all three in one day is tiring. I recommend choosing Jinshan and Beigushan, and taking the ferry to Jiaoshan for the beautiful river views. ⏰ Jinshan in the morning and Beigushan in the afternoon is a perfect pace. 📍 Xijindu Ancient Street is great for an evening stroll; the bluestone road is flat, and there are teahouses on both sides where you can rest. ⚠️ Some steps at Beigushan are quite steep, so hold onto the railings. Jurong Maoshan is worth a separate day trip; there are many Taoist temples on the mountain, and the cable car can save a lot of energy. Staying near Xijindu or Dashikou in Zhenjiang is convenient, and public transport can reach all attractions. 🍜 Pot-lid noodles and pork aspic are local specialties. The noodle broth can be salty, so ask the restaurant to use less salt. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons; summers can be muggy. 5️⃣ Weihai | Shandong You'll need to wake up early to watch the sunrise at Chengshantou, but it's windy by the sea, so ⏰ wear a jacket even on summer mornings. 📍 The rock at "Tianjintou" in the scenic area is a must-see spot. The path is flat, and you can even get close to it in a wheelchair. Huaxia City is best visited in the afternoon; there are many performances and indoor activities, so rain won't be an issue. You need to take a boat to Liugong Island, so ⚠️ seniors prone to seasickness should take medication in advance. There are many slopes on the island, so take the sightseeing bus if walking is difficult. Weihai is perfect for a slow-paced 3–5 day stay; you can stroll by the sea, eat seafood, and soak in hot springs. 🍜 Mackerel dumplings and sea worm rice are worth trying, but don't eat too much seafood at once. June to September is the best time for swimming, but visiting to see the sea and enjoy the breeze in other months is also nice. 6️⃣ Manzhouli | Inner Mongolia The Matryoshka Scenic Area is the face of the city. ⏰ It looks best when lit up in the evening; it's quite ordinary during the day. 📍 The area around Matryoshka Square is walkable, with hotels and restaurants concentrated nearby, so you don't have to run around. There are performances and amusement rides in the scenic area; let your parents choose what they are interested in, no need to do everything. ⚠️ Ticket prices and accommodation costs rise during peak season, so booking in advance can save you money. Border cities have large temperature differences between day and night, so bring long sleeves even in summer. It's suitable to combine with a trip to Hulunbuir, but don't overpack your itinerary. 🍜 You can try Russian-style borscht and rye bread. June to August is the best time for the grasslands, but it's also the busiest time. 7️⃣ Southeast Guizhou | Guizhou Xijiang Qianhu Miao Village is worth an overnight stay to see the night view. ⏰ It's most photogenic when the lights on the observation deck turn on in the evening, but there are many steps, so seniors should walk slowly. 📍 The main street in the village is flat, and dining and accommodation along the street are convenient. Zhaoxing Dong Village is quieter than Xijiang, and the Drum Towers and Wind and Rain Bridges are worth taking your time to see. Zhenyuan Ancient Town is perfect for an evening stroll along the Wuyang River; ⚠️ the railings by the river are low, so keep an eye on your parents. Xianghuoyan is suitable for those who like natural scenery, and the path is not difficult. Buses and chartered cars are the main ways to travel between the villages in Southeast Guizhou. I recommend choosing two or three to explore in depth rather than trying to see too many. 🍜 Sour soup fish is appetizing, but ask about the level of sourness and spiciness first. April to October is suitable; it rains a lot in summer, so bring non-slip shoes. 8️⃣ Yichun | Heilongjiang Tangwanghe Forest Sea and Strange Stones is Yichun's signature attraction. ⏰ Enter the scenic area in the morning when the light in the forest is good and the air is fresh. 📍 The boardwalk in the Stone Forest area is flat, and a two-to-three-hour walk is just right without being tiring. ⚠️ There are many mosquitoes in the forest area, so prepare mosquito repellent and long pants for your parents. It's the most cost-effective place to escape the summer heat, and you'll still need a blanket to sleep at night. The changing leaves in autumn are also beautiful, but the temperature drops quickly. There are shuttle buses from Yichun city to Tangwanghe, or you can hire a car. 🍜 Local wild vegetables and stews are hearty, but the flavor can be salty, so you can ask the kitchen to use less salt. June to September is the best window; it's too cold in winter for seniors. Pick a destination, book your accommodation, cut your itinerary in half, and you've already succeeded in most of your trip with your parents. Among these 8, Zhenjiang and Weihai are best for a first-time trip with seniors, while Bortala and Yichun are for those who are physically active and want to see grand landscapes. Where do you plan to take them first?

When traveling with parents, the biggest fears are packed itineraries, too many stairs, and complicated transfers. These 8️⃣ places share one core concept: walk less, ride more, and don't compromise on the scenery. 01 Zhenjiang | Jiangsu Zhenjiang is perfect for slowing down the pace. Jinshan, Jiaoshan, and Beigu Mountain face each other across the river, but don't try to climb all three in one day. Choosing Jinshan and Beigu Mountain is enough. ⏰ Start at Jinshan in the morning. The temple grounds are mostly flat, with stairs concentrated in the middle section. You can finish touring in about 40 mins at a leisurely pace. 📍 Xijindu Ancient Street is a hidden gem in Zhenjiang. The bluestone paths are flat, and the old buildings on both sides have been converted into teahouses and snack shops. 🍜 Try pot-lid noodles with pork aspic. The broth can be salty, so ask the owner to go easy on the soy sauce. ⚠️ You need to take a ferry to Jiaoshan. The boat can rock when it's windy, so it's best to skip this if your parents get seasick. Jurong Maoshan is about a 1-hour drive from the city center. There's a shuttle bus to the summit, so you don't have to climb. It's great for seniors interested in Taoist culture, but the mountain roads are winding, so have motion sickness medicine ready. Ticket prices and shuttle arrangements are subject to official daily announcements. 02 Shiyan | Hubei The core of Shiyan is Wudang Mountain, but definitely don't force your parents to climb it. 🚄 It's about a 40-min drive from Shiyan Station to the Wudang Mountain scenic area, where sightseeing buses connect the main attractions. ⏰ We recommend arriving at the visitor center before 7:30 AM to avoid peak tour group hours. 📍 Zixiao Palace and Nanyan Palace are flat sightseeing areas with concentrated halls, making them easy to walk around. You can take a cable car up and down to the Golden Summit, but there are still some stairs from the cable car station to the summit, so gauge your ability accordingly. ⚠️ There's a large temperature difference on the mountain, so bring a light jacket even in summer. In winter, some sections may be temporarily closed due to icy roads. 🍜 Local restaurants in Wudangshan Town at the foot of the mountain serve Taoist vegetarian dishes with light flavors, which are gentle on seniors' stomachs. Choose accommodation near the scenic area entrance so you don't have to re-enter the park the next day. Suitable for seniors who have limited mobility but want to see ancient architecture. 03 Fuzhou | Fujian Fuzhou is the kind of city where you just "walk a bit and then sit down for tea." The main street of Three Lanes and Seven Alleys is flat, but the real beauty is in the side alleys. We recommend entering from Nanhou Street and slowly wandering through Ta Lane and Huang Lane. ⏰ After 4:00 PM, the light hits the white walls at an angle, making it great for photos without the harsh sun. 📍 There are free courtyards near the birthplace of Lin Zexu where you can sit and relax. 🍜 Tongli Rouyan (meat wontons) and Yonghe Fish Balls are within walking distance. The fish balls are quite chewy, so Rouyan is a safer choice for seniors with dental issues. ⚠️ The main street is crowded on weekends, which can be difficult if you're pushing a wheelchair, so we recommend visiting on weekdays. Fuzhou has abundant hot spring resources, and many hotels in the city have soaking pools. Soaking in the evening after a long day of walking is great for seniors' knees. Suitable for families who want to avoid the sun and enjoy a slow-paced stroll. 04 Jingdezhen | Jiangxi Jingdezhen is perfect for parents interested in porcelain. The Taoxichuan Ceramic Art Avenue is converted from old factory buildings; the ground is flat, and the atmosphere is great after the lights come on in the evening. ⏰ There's a creative market on Friday and Saturday nights with concentrated stalls, so you don't have to backtrack. 📍 You can see the entire handmade porcelain process at the Jingdezhen Ancient Kiln Folk Customs Museum, which offers electric cart transport. ⚠️ The park is large and takes about 2 hours to walk through, so we recommend taking the cart to the furthest point first and then exploring your way out. 🍜 Cold noodles and Jiaozi Ba (dumpling cakes) outside the park are local breakfast staples, and you can choose your spice level. There are many homestays around Taoxichuan, so stay for a night to explore at a leisurely pace. Porcelain shop prices can be inflated, so bargain if you like something, but don't make impulsive purchases. Suitable for seniors who enjoy handicrafts and don't want to rush their itinerary. 05 Bortala | Xinjiang The Bortala route is best suited for self-driving or chartered cars, as public transport is infrequent. The road around Sayram Lake is smooth, allowing you to stop and enjoy the view at any time without needing to hike. ⏰ Wildflowers are in full bloom from June to August, and the lake water is a brilliant blue. 📍 The Anjihai Grand Canyon viewing platform is right by the road, just a few steps from where you park, but there are no railings at the cliff edge. ⚠️ Be sure to hold onto seniors and keep them away from the edge. The wetlands and river valleys in Wenquan County are perfect for evening strolls, and the altitude is low, so there's no need to worry about altitude sickness. 🍜 Meals along the way are mainly beef, mutton, and pasta, so seniors with sensitive stomachs should bring some digestive medicine. There's a large temperature difference between day and night, so bring a fleece jacket even in summer. Suitable for parents who are in good health and can handle long car rides. 06 Jinzhou | Liaoning Mount Yiwulü in Jinzhou is one of the few mountains in Northeast China with gentle slopes. The scenic area has sightseeing buses that go halfway up the mountain, and the remaining path is flat and easy to walk. ⏰ May and October are the most comfortable times to visit, with pear blossoms in spring and red leaves in autumn. 📍 The halls around Guanyin Pavilion are concentrated with few stairs, making it perfect for a leisurely visit. ⚠️ The mountain may be closed in winter due to icy roads, so check the scenic area announcements before you leave. 🍜 Jinzhou barbecue is famous, but when traveling with parents, we recommend choosing stewed or steamed dishes and avoiding greasy food at night. It's about a 1.5-hour drive from the city to Mount Yiwulü, so we recommend chartering a car for the round trip to save the hassle of waiting for transport. Suitable for seniors who want to hike but are afraid of getting tired; you can finish the trip in half a day. 07 Changchun | Jilin Changchun's attractions are scattered, but each one is easy to navigate. The Museum of the Imperial Palace of Manchukuo has audio guides and rest chairs, and indoor visits are unaffected by the weather. ⏰ It's less crowded in the morning, and 2 hours is just right for a leisurely visit. 📍 Changchun World Sculpture Park is large, so we recommend taking the sightseeing bus and focusing on a few representative works. Changchun Movie Wonderland is more focused on amusement rides, which may not interest seniors, so you can skip it. Jingyuetan is perfect for taking an electric cart around the lake, and the forest colors are best in autumn. ⚠️ Roads are slippery in winter, so wear non-slip shoes. There's a large temperature difference between indoors and outdoors, so add or remove layers when entering or leaving. 🍜 Changchun's chicken soup tofu skewers and Xueyi Dousha (sweet bean paste with egg white) have mild flavors that are suitable for seniors. Suitable for families who want to see snow in winter without freezing. 08 Xiangtan | Hunan The Xiangtan route combines nature and culture. The Caojia'ao Waterfall has plenty of water during the rainy season, but the trails are slippery. ⚠️ Seniors should hold onto the railings firmly, and you can skip it during the dry season when the water is low. ⏰ It's most spectacular 2 or 3 days after the rain. 📍 The Shaoshan tourist area is large and has eco-friendly shuttle buses. The core area is mostly flat, making it suitable for wheelchairs. 🍜 Mao's braised pork in Shaoshan is on the sweet side, so ask the kitchen to use less sugar when ordering. 🚄 It's about a 40-min drive from Xiangtan North Station to Shaoshan, so we recommend leaving early and returning early. Keep the overall pace to half a day and return to the city in the afternoon to rest. Suitable for seniors who are interested in modern history and have decent mobility. Ticket prices and shuttle arrangements are subject to official daily announcements. Pick one close to home to try first. If your parents can enjoy it, that's what really matters. Which city do you most want to take them to?

Don't let your kids wander aimlessly during the National Day holiday! These 6 places offer fun and educational experiences: 01 Yanbian | Jilin When bringing kids to Yanbian, don't just focus on taking photos at the famous Instagrammable walls. Liudingshan Cultural Tourism Area is the real place to get kids moving. ⏰ Head to the scenic area before 9 AM. It's less crowded, the lighting is softer, and you can take a sightseeing bus to the top of the mountain, where the entire valley unfolds below. Even if your child doesn't understand Buddhist culture, standing at the foot of the Buddha statue and looking up will elicit a genuine "wow." 📍 It takes about an hour to drive from Yanji city. Driving or hiring a car is recommended, as public transportation will take up half a day. There are electric shuttle buses within the scenic area, which are also convenient for strollers and children. 🍜 After descending the mountain, head back to Yanji for a bowl of cold noodles with sweet and sour pork. If your child doesn't like sour flavors, order warm noodles for a milder broth. Don't just eat anywhere near the scenic area entrance; it's expensive and mediocre. ⚠️ During the National Day holiday, the temperature difference between day and night in Yanbian is significant; you'll need to pack a light down jacket and short-sleeved shirt. The mountain winds are strong, so a hat is more useful than an umbrella. 02 Fuyang|Anhui The name "Balihe" sounds like a small river, but once you enter, you'll find it's a large lake. The main attractions for children are "water play" and "bird watching." In the morning, visit the aviary. Peacock displays are a random occurrence, but ostriches and swans are practically open every day. Children can spend half an hour feeding the birds, giving parents a good opportunity to rest in the shade. ⏰ Don't push yourself too hard at lunchtime; go out for lunch and come back later. The fish head soup at the farmhouse near the entrance is good; ask about the price before ordering, as it's sold by weight and can easily exceed your budget. 📍 In the afternoon, take a boat tour on the lake. Choose a painted boat over a speedboat; it's slower, but you can see the water birds in the reeds more clearly. Purchase boat tickets separately. Confirm the route duration before boarding; don't be misled by the phrase "around the lake." ⚠️ Balihe Scenic Area is suitable for children aged five and up. Strollers that are too small will have difficulty getting on and off the boat. During the National Day holiday, there will be large crowds. Buying tickets online in advance can save queuing time. Ticket prices and opening requirements are subject to official announcements on the day. 03 Chongqing When traveling with children in Chongqing, don't just go to Hongyadong. Dazu Rock Carvings, Jinyun Mountain, Wulong Karst, and the Yangtze River Three Gorges—four days is still too much to handle. Place Dazu Rock Carvings on the first day. Visit Baoding Mountain in the morning and explore Beishan in the afternoon. The rock carvings have a strong narrative; explaining the "Six Realms of Rebirth" to children is more effective than reading from a textbook. ⏰ After 4 PM, the sunlight is at an angle, making the Buddha statues' outlines clearest. Jinyun Mountain is suitable for the second day; the hike is of moderate intensity, and the bamboo forest is cool. 📍 Start from Beibei and hike up the mountain via the fitness trail; children can easily complete it on their own. There's a tofu rice stall at the summit for only 5 yuan a bowl, cheaper than down below. Spend a full day each on Wulong and the Three Gorges. At Wulong's Three Natural Bridges, take the elevator down to the valley floor. Looking up at the arches, children will ask, "Was that made by dinosaurs?" For the Three Gorges cruise, choose a shorter route; Fengjie to Wushan is sufficient. Don't try to go too far. ⚠️ Traffic in Chongqing's main urban area is severe during the National Day holiday. It's recommended to take the train to Wulong Station and then transfer. Book Yangtze River Three Gorges cruise tickets in advance; seats are generally full on the day. Ticket prices and opening hours are subject to official announcements on the day. 04 Yangjiang|Guangdong Hailing Island's Dajiaowan is a place in Guangdong where you can still swim during the National Day holiday. The main focus for families with children isn't swimming, but "beachcombing" and "oyster eating." ⏰ Go to the beach at 7 am; the beach has the most small crabs and shells after the tide recedes. Kids can spend a whole morning collecting things with a small bucket; it's more fun than splashing around in the pool. 📍 The Dajiaowan Maritime Silk Road Tourist Area has a dedicated children's water play area with small waves and shallow water, and lifeguards are on hand. Don't take kids surfing; the waves are too high for adults to handle. 🍜 At noon, go to the Zhaipo Farmers Market to buy oysters and flower crabs and have them cooked at a nearby shop. Oysters are sold by the dozen; prices fluctuate during the National Day holiday, so ask the price before ordering. If your child doesn't like seafood, order a sea urchin fried rice dish—it's delicious! ⚠️ Accommodation on Hailing Island doubles during the National Day holiday; book a month in advance. Beach umbrellas and chairs are charged separately; bringing your own picnic mat is more economical. Reapply sunscreen every two hours; the UV rays at the beach are no joke. 05 Yangzhou|Jiangsu Yangzhou is perfect for a leisurely stroll with kids. Slender West Lake, Geyuan Garden, and Heyuan Garden can be visited in a day and a half. Don't try to do too much; carry your child if they can't walk, and take a boat ride if they can't carry you. ⏰ Enter Slender West Lake as soon as it opens at 7:30 AM. Walk from the South Gate to Xu Garden, then take a rowboat to the Twenty-Four Bridges. There's a guided tour on the boat; children are more focused on the stories than on foot. 📍 Boat tickets are sold separately; choose a one-way trip. After disembarking, you can stroll through Wanhua Garden. Choose one to explore in detail, either Ge Garden or He Garden. Children can easily explore the Four Seasons Rockery in Ge Garden, while He Garden's covered walkways and corridors are like a maze. Visiting both can be visually overwhelming; I prefer Ge Garden for its more interactive elements. 🍜 At noon, go to Dongguan Street. Don't eat on the main street; turn into Caiyi Street instead. Get a bowl of dumpling noodles and a side of hot dried bean curd strips—the kids eat the noodles, you eat the bean curd strips. Yangzhou fried rice is pretty much the same everywhere; no need to specifically look for trendy spots. ⚠️ Traffic control is in place around Slender West Lake during the National Day holiday. Take a taxi to the West Gate and then walk. Ge Garden and He Garden are closed on Mondays; check in advance. Ticket prices and opening hours are subject to official announcements on the day. 06 Honghe | Yunnan Yuanyang Rice Terraces and Jianshui Ancient City: one for the sky, the other for the people. For families with children, driving is recommended; public transportation is too much of a hassle. ⏰ Yuanyang Rice Terraces are flooded starting in October; visiting during the National Day holiday will allow you to witness the mirror-like surface effect. Watch the sunrise at Duoyishu and the sunset at Tiger Mouth. If your children can't get up, skip the sunrise and go to Bada at 5 pm; the light is just as good. 📍 Allocate half a day for Jianshui Ancient City, visiting Zhu Family Garden and the Confucian Temple together. The Confucian Temple has an ancient well where children can wash their hands, which is more enjoyable than looking at exhibits. Take the mini-train from Lin'an Station; the round trip takes three hours, so buy tickets in advance. 🍜 Jianshui roasted tofu is sold individually; children can sit on small stools and roast it themselves. Grass sprout rice noodles are a local specialty; the grass sprouts are crisp and crunchy, and children generally enjoy them. ⚠️ Yuanyang Mountain Road has many bends; give children prone to motion sickness medication beforehand. The terraced field viewing platform is windy; bring a jacket. Accommodation is scarce during the National Day holiday; staying in Duoyishu Village is more convenient for watching the sunrise than staying in Xinjie Town. 07 Bortala | Xinjiang Sayram Lake, Anjihai Grand Canyon, and Wenquan County: This route is relatively less crowded during the National Day holiday, but the scenery is just as stunning. ⏰ Enter Sayram Lake from the East Gate in the morning and circle the lake counter-clockwise. The lake water in October is a deep, almost blackish blue; the child said it looked like "a giant block of jelly." 📍 There are swans near Dianjiangtai; bring some bread but don't feed them too much, as the staff will remind you. Anjihai Grand Canyon is not a tourist area; it's a wild landscape. Standing on the cliff edge and looking down, the river spreads out like tree branches. ⚠️ There are no guardrails; children must be held tightly, and avoid going near the edge when it's windy. Wenquan County is a good place to stay overnight and relax in the hot springs. The county town is small, so there aren't many dining options. Hand-pulled mutton and Naren (a type of noodle soup) are plentiful. If the kids don't like mutton, they can order mixed noodles with tomato and egg. 🚄 It takes about four hours by train from Bole to Urumqi, but driving is more flexible. Xinjiang is cold in the mornings and evenings during the National Day holiday, so bring down jackets. Ticket prices and opening hours are subject to official announcements on the day. 08 Guiyang|Guizhou Four places around Guiyang: Tianhetan, Qingyan Ancient Town, Gaopo Yunding Grassland, and Huaxi Park. Two days and one night is just right. Tianhetan is on the first morning. We take a boat into the cave. The kids weren't particularly interested in the stalactites, but we could spend half a day exploring the waterfall area after exiting the cave. 📍 It's accessible from the city center by subway and bus; a taxi costs about 40 yuan. We go to Qingyan Ancient Town in the afternoon. Don't go through the main street; enter from the west gate. The alleys are quiet. 🍜 Braised pig's feet are sold individually, and the kids like the rice cakes and porridge. Buy a bag of rose sugar to eat on the way; it's two yuan more expensive in the ancient town than outside. The second morning at Gaopo Yunding Grassland, an hour's drive from the city. The grass is starting to turn yellow in October, but the windmills and sea of clouds are still there. Children fly kites and chase sheep, adults take photos. ⚠️ There's no cell phone signal on the mountain, so download an offline map beforehand. Huaxi Park wraps up in the evening; a popular spot for locals to take their kids. Rent a bicycle and ride around, then have beef noodles for dinner. Guiyang is often rainy during the National Day holiday, so always carry an umbrella. None of these six places are "just a quick check-in." Kids won't remember the place names, but they'll remember the sourness of the cold noodles, the shimmering terraced fields, and the crabs by the sea. Pick two or three and explore at your own pace. Don't let your kids wander aimlessly during the National Day holiday; these 6 places offer fun and educational experiences. 01 Yanbian | Jilin When bringing kids to Yanbian, don't just focus on taking photos at the famous Instagrammable walls. Liudingshan Cultural Tourism Area is the real place to get kids moving. ⏰ Arrive at the scenic area around 9 AM. It's less crowded and the light is softer. Take the sightseeing bus to the top of the mountain, and the entire valley is below you. Children may not understand Buddhist culture, but standing at the foot of the Buddha statue and looking up, that "wow" is genuine. 📍 It takes about an hour to drive from Yanji city. Driving or hiring a car is recommended; public transportation will take half a day. There are electric shuttle buses within the scenic area, which are also suitable for strollers and children. 🍜 After descending the mountain, go back to Yanji and have a bowl of cold noodles with sweet and sour pork. If children don't like sour flavors, order warm noodles for a milder broth. Don't just eat anywhere near the scenic area entrance; it's expensive and mediocre. ⚠️ During the National Day holiday, the temperature difference between day and night in Yanbian is significant. Pack a light down jacket and short-sleeved shirt in your bag. The mountain wind is strong; a hat is more useful than an umbrella. 02 Fuyang|Anhui The name "Balihe" sounds like a small river, but once you get there, you'll find it's a large lake. For families with children, the main attractions are "water play" and "bird watching." In the morning, visit the aviary. Peacock displays are a random occurrence, but ostriches and swans are generally open daily. Children can spend up to half an hour feeding the birds, giving parents a good opportunity to rest in the shade. ⏰ Don't force yourself to eat lunch outside the park. The fish head soup at the farmhouse near the entrance is good; ask about the price before ordering, as it's sold by weight and can easily exceed your budget. 📍 In the afternoon, take a boat trip on the lake. Choose a painted boat over a speedboat; it's slower, but you'll get a better view of the water birds in the reeds. Buy boat tickets separately, and confirm the route length before boarding; don't be misled by phrases like "around the lake." ⚠️ Balihe is suitable for children over five years old; strollers are difficult to board and disembark. During the National Day holiday, there will be large crowds; buying tickets online in advance can save queuing time. Ticket prices and opening hours are subject to official announcements on the day of the trip. 03 Chongqing When traveling with kids in Chongqing, don't just focus on the crowded Hongyadong. Dazu Rock Carvings, Jinyun Mountain, Wulong Karst, and the Yangtze River Three Gorges – even four days for all four destinations would feel rushed. Place Dazu Rock Carvings on the first day. Visit Baoding Mountain in the morning and explore Beishan in the afternoon. The carvings are rich in narrative; explaining the "Six Realms of Rebirth" is more effective than reading from a textbook. ⏰ After 4 PM, the sunlight is at an angle, making the Buddha statues' outlines clearest. Jinyun Mountain is suitable for the second day; the hike is moderately strenuous, and the bamboo forest is cool. 📍 Start from Beibei and hike the fitness trail; kids can easily complete it on their own. There's a tofu rice stall at the summit for only 5 yuan a bowl, cheaper than at the foot of the mountain. Dedicate a full day each to Wulong and the Three Gorges. At the Wulong Natural Bridges, take the elevator down to the valley floor. Looking up at the arches, kids will ask, "Was that made by dinosaurs?" Choose a short cruise route for the Three Gorges, from Fengjie to Wushan is sufficient; don't try to go too far. ⚠️ Traffic congestion in Chongqing's main urban area is severe during the National Day holiday. For Wulong, it's recommended to take the train to Wulong Station and then transfer. Book Yangtze River Three Gorges cruise tickets in advance, as seats are generally full on the day. Ticket prices and opening hours are subject to official announcements on the day. 04 Yangjiang|Guangdong Hailing Island's Dajiaowan Beach is a place in Guangdong where you can still swim during the National Day holiday. For families with children, the focus isn't swimming, but rather "beachcombing" and "oyster eating." ⏰ Go to the beach at 7 am; after the tide recedes, there are the most small crabs and shells. Kids can spend the whole morning collecting them with a small bucket, which is more fun than splashing around in the pool. 📍 The Dajiaowan Maritime Silk Road Tourist Area has a dedicated children's water play area with small waves and shallow water, and lifeguards are on duty. Don't bring children surfing; the waves are too high for adults to stand on. 🍜 At noon, we went to the Zhaipo Farmers Market to buy oysters and flower crabs and had them cooked at a nearby shop. Oysters are sold by the dozen, and prices fluctuate during the National Day holiday, so ask the price before ordering. Since the kids don't like seafood, we ordered sea urchin fried rice, which was delicious. ⚠️ Accommodation on Hailing Island is double the price during the National Day holiday, so book a month in advance. Beach umbrellas and chairs are charged separately; bringing your own picnic mat is more cost-effective. Reapply sunscreen every two hours; the UV rays at the beach are no joke. 05 Yangzhou|Jiangsu Yangzhou is perfect for a leisurely stroll with kids. A day and a half is just right to visit Slender West Lake, Ge Garden, and He Garden. Don't try to do too much; carry the kids if they can't walk, and take a boat ride if they can't carry them anymore. ⏰ Enter Slender West Lake when it opens at 7:30 am. Walk from the South Gate to Xu Garden, then take a rowboat to the Twenty-Four Bridges. There are guided tours on the boat, and kids are more focused on listening to stories than walking. 📍 Buy boat tickets separately, choose a one-way trip, and you can visit Wanhua Garden after disembarking. Choose one to explore in detail, Ge Garden or He Garden. Children can easily explore Ge Garden's four-season rockery, while He Garden's covered walkways and corridors are like a maze. Visiting both can lead to aesthetic fatigue; I prefer Ge Garden, as it offers more interactive experiences. 🍜 Go to Dongguan Street for lunch. Don't eat on the main street; turn into Caiyi Street instead. Get a bowl of dumpling noodles and a side of hot dried bean curd strips—the kids eat the noodles, you eat the bean curd strips. 3 days and 2 nights is just enough to tour the Ili Valley. Yining is the capital of the Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture. It's a small city where Uyghur, Kazakh, Han, Hui, and other ethnic groups live together, and life moves at a slow pace. 🌿 Spending the first 2 days in the city and adding Sayram Lake on the third day is a logical itinerary. Dedicate your first day to Liuxing Street. This area is a hexagonal district with 6 roads radiating from the center, making it feel like a small maze with Russian-style buildings and old courtyards side by side. The Accordion Museum and the Alexander Accordion Collection are both in this area; the entrances are small, but you can see vintage instruments inside. You'll find freshly baked leba (Russian bread) and kvass along the street—buy some to snack on while you walk. 🎹 Liuxing Street is great for walking during the day, with cafes, craft shops, and small galleries lining the streets, where locals and travelers mingle. Further north, Hanren Street is a bustling bazaar filled with naan, baked buns, dried fruits, and freshly squeezed pomegranate juice. Stalls are packed together, so it's best to take a lap before deciding what to buy. Further south is the Kazanqi Folk Custom Tourism Area. This is an old neighborhood with a large Uyghur population, where houses are painted blue, white, and yellow, featuring carved doors and windows, and grape trellises in the courtyards. You can take a horse-drawn carriage to explore the alleys or wander around at your own pace. If you want to peek into a courtyard, just ask the owner first. 🍇 Carriage rides are charged by the trip, so agree on the route and price with the driver beforehand. For lunch, find a local restaurant to try lagman, pilaf, or baked buns—the portions are generous. In the evening, head to the Ili River Bridge to watch the sunset. The river is south of the city, and the bridge is wide. The setting sun paints the river and the distant mountains in warm colors, with people gathering both on and under the bridge. 🌇 By late September, the sun sets earlier, so check the sunset time before you go to avoid arriving after dark. Below the bridge is the Riverside Park, which has a long trail along the river where people take leisurely strolls. A note on lavender: you have to pick the right season. The lavender fields in Huocheng only bloom in June and July; fields of purple flowers are a summer sight. If you come in late September, the fields will have been harvested, and you'll mostly see cultivation bases and lavender products, so don't set your expectations based on photos from the blooming season. 🌸 If you really want to go, set aside at least half a day to travel from Yining toward Huocheng and Qingshuihe. To get from Yining to Sayram Lake, you'll cross the Guozigou Bridge. The bridge spans the Guozigou Valley; it's very high, with hillsides and spruce trees on both sides. You can't stop on the bridge, so if you want to take in the view, stop for a while at a designated scenic overlook instead. 🛣️ Dedicate the third day to Sayram Lake. The lake is in Bortala, at an altitude of around 2,000 meters. It's a long drive from Yining, usually via the expressway, which also takes you through Guozigou. The lake water comes from melted snow and is very clear. It's windy and cold by the lake, so be sure to bring a windproof jacket. There is a road around the lake; if you're driving, you can circle about half of it, but follow parking instructions when it's crowded. By late September, the mountains may have occasional early snow, and if you encounter the lake after a snowfall, it will be genuinely cold. 🌨️ For accommodation, choose areas near Liuxing Street or Kazanqi in downtown Yining so you can explore in the evening. If you want to stay closer to the lake, spend an extra night in the Qingshuihe area. Besides lagman, pilaf, and baked buns, try narin, milk tea, yogurt balls, and kvass. For breakfast, naan with milk tea is a simple and easy option. You might occasionally run into herdsmen driving cattle or sheep by the lake—just watch from a distance and don't get too close. Yining has its own airport and train station. You can fly or take a train from Urumqi, and it's not far to get into the city. Within the city, walking and taking taxis are enough, but the trip to the lake is long, so allow plenty of time. Yining is a small city where many ethnic groups live together. The signs, food, and houses on the streets all have their own unique styles, yet they blend together seamlessly, creating a relaxing, slow-paced atmosphere as you explore. Ticket prices, opening hours, and shuttle buses to the lake are adjusted seasonally. Just check the current information a few days before you leave; don't rely on information saved months ago to plan your trip. In late September, the temperature difference between day and night in Yining increases. Autumn leaves in the valley slowly begin to change color; the colors become more vibrant after October, the wind gets sharper in November, and it snows in December. A fleece and a jacket are enough for the city, but add another layer when going up the mountains or to the lake, and don't forget a hat, scarf, and gloves. Driving back from the lake, you'll see layers of spruce trees above the snow line outside your window, while the river continues to flow slowly through the city. Yining doesn't have the hustle and bustle of major tourist attractions; it's the kind of place that keeps you there as you explore.

Traveling with Trip.com lists, this time I chose Sayram Lake, a featured spot on the "Bortala Night Tour Must-Visit Attractions List," making this a bit of a list-verification trip 🌊 Let's start with the night tour list. Honestly, I gave the night tour a low score. It's pitch black at night with no lighting displays, so it's better suited for campers. The evening, however, is great for photos, with soft light and a wonderful atmosphere. But if you're asking if it's worth visiting in autumn? It absolutely is! 🍂 I have to give the autumn scenery a 5/5! The yellow meadows against the deep blue lake, plus the seasonal autumn haystacks, create such rich layers that every photo looks like a wallpaper~ As for the basic info, the name and address are accurate, and the park is open all day, all year round. I've verified it myself, and it's all good ✅ As for when to go? It really doesn't matter. Spring has its colors and autumn has its scenery. As long as the weather is good, you're good to go~ 📌Practical tips: Sayram Lake is very weather-dependent. It's breathtakingly beautiful on sunny days, but its appeal drops significantly when it's cloudy or rainy! Be sure to keep a close eye on the weather before you head out and plan your trip accordingly ☀️ Also, if you want to capture that perfect "shot of a lifetime," I recommend driving to Keleyongzhu before sunrise. It's less crowded, the scenery is beautiful, and the light is just right 📸 Overall, Sayram Lake is worth adding to your bucket list, but I recommend checking the weather before deciding on your travel dates~

Don't want to deal with National Day crowds? These 6 affordable, uncrowded, and scenic small cities are perfect 01 Zhangye | Gansu The Northwest Grand Loop for the National Day holiday draws everyone to Dunhuang and Chaka, leaving Zhangye relatively peaceful. It is most comfortable to enter Colorful Danxia after 4:00 PM, when the light hits the rock layers at an angle, making the colors two shades richer than at noon. Just arrive at Viewing Platform No. 4 an hour before sunset to grab a spot. Admission and sightseeing bus tickets are bundled together; please check the official announcement on the day for specific pricing. Do not skip the Giant Buddha Temple in the city. The Western Xia Reclining Buddha is over 30 meters long, and the hall is nice and cool. It is perfect to visit on the second morning after touring the Danxia. ⚠️ You cannot take photos in the mural area of the temple, and the security guards are strict. If you have to choose between Liqian Ancient City and Mati Temple, I would bet on Mati Temple. Climbing the 33-Heaven Grottoes is tiring but worth it. Elderly people and children can just walk to the lower platform to take a look. 🚄 It takes about 40 minutes to take a taxi from Zhangye West Station to Danxia, but carpooling is more cost-effective. In the evening, go to Ganzhou Market to eat Cuoyu noodles and "xiaofan" (small rice/stew); you can get full for around CNY 10. 02 Bortala | Xinjiang Don't just think of Kanas when you think of Xinjiang. This route in Bortala is half as crowded during the National Day holiday, and prices are stable. The blue of Sayram Lake will truly leave you speechless. ⏰ Arrive at the lakeside before 9:00 AM when the wind is light and the reflections are complete; after 11:00 AM, the wind picks up and you won't be able to capture that mirror-like effect. The loop around the lake is over 90 km. Self-driving is the most convenient, but if you don't have a car, you can carpool at the entrance of the scenic area. ⚠️ It is windy by the lake, so a windbreaker is more practical than a dress. Don't ask me how I know. Anjihai Grand Canyon is a wild attraction with no guardrails. Your legs will feel weak standing on the edge of the cliff to take photos, so those with a fear of heights should stand back. The landscape of Wenquan County is suitable for staying one night and soaking in the hot springs. Accommodation in the county town is only over CNY 100 during the National Day holiday. 📍 Take the provincial road from Bole to Wenquan County; the grasslands along the way are even more beautiful than those inside the scenic area. As for food, you can walk into any place for pilaf and baked buns without much risk of a bad meal. 03 Benxi | Liaoning If you want to see red leaves during the National Day holiday but are afraid of crowds, Benxi is much more practical than Xiangshan. The red leaves in Guanmenshan National Forest Park usually start to change color in early October. ⏰ Enter the park before 7:30 AM to beat the tour buses and finish the "King of Maples" route. Benxi Water Cave involves taking a boat into the cave. It is a constant 12°C, so you will need a jacket inside even if you are wearing short sleeves outside. ⚠️ Taking photos inside the cave is basically blurry, so don't waste your phone battery. There are many steps in the dry cave section, so if you are bringing elderly people, you can keep it simple. Wunü Mountain in Huanren is suitable for those who like hiking. You can see the bend of the Hun River from the top, and the view is wide. 🚄 There is a special line from Benxi Station to the Water Cave. For Guanmenshan, it is recommended to drive or charter a car. Xiaoshi lamb soup is the soul of Benxi. Have a bowl in the morning with a "huoshao" (baked flatbread), and you can eat until you are full for CNY 20. 04 Fangchenggang | Guangxi You know how crowded Beihai and Weizhou Island are during the National Day holiday. Fangchenggang is right next door; you can see the same sea, but with far fewer people. You can walk on the mudflats of Leshan Ancient Fishing Village during low tide. ⏰ Check the tide table before you go, as the entire mudflat is underwater during high tide. The coastal road is suitable for cycling. From the Port District towards Jiangshan Peninsula, it is all sea along the way. ⚠️ Do not order directly at the seafood food stalls at the entrance of the scenic area. Walk a few steps into the village, and the price can be 30% lower. Qisha Fishing Port has fishing boats docking in the morning. If you want to buy fresh seafood that has just landed, get up early. 📍 There is plenty of accommodation near Taohuawan Square in the Port District, which can be booked for under CNY 200 during the National Day holiday. It is perfect for kids to dig in the sand and couples to watch the sunset; the pace is just right. 05 Kunming | Yunnan Kunming is a transit hub to avoid crowds during the National Day holiday. Flight tickets are cheaper than flying to Dali or Lijiang, and the temperature stays around 20°C. Daguan Park has a chrysanthemum exhibition in the autumn. There are many local elderly people and few tourists, and the view of Dianchi Lake from the building with the long couplet is quite good. You have to wait until November for the black-headed gulls at Haigeng Dam by Dianchi Lake. If you go during the National Day holiday, you will just be blowing in the wind and looking at the water, so don't have the wrong expectations. ⚠️ Dongchuan Red Land is more than 3–4 hours away from the city. It is too rushed to go back and forth in one day, so it is recommended to stay for one night. The best time for the Red Land is from September to November, when the crops have been harvested, the red soil is exposed, and the colors are the most authentic. 🚄 There are shuttle buses from Kunming North Bus Station to Dongchuan, where you can transfer to local transport. The Expo Garden is suitable for spending half a day with children. The park is large, so renting a scooter will save you effort. For Crossing-the-Bridge Rice Noodles, go to old shops like Jianxinyuan; don't eat in the scenic area. 06 Mudanjiang | Heilongjiang The autumn scenery of Jingpo Lake is just right during the National Day holiday. The water volume of Diaoshuilou Waterfall is smaller than in summer, but it looks even better with the "five-flower mountain" (autumn foliage) on both sides. ⏰ Arrive at the waterfall viewing platform before 10:00 AM, when the backlight is not so strong. The lake area is very large, and taking a cruise is more cost-effective than walking. Please check the scenic area's daily schedule for specific boat times. ⚠️ The prices at the grilled fish stalls by the lake are inflated. If you want to eat fish, go back to the city to find a restaurant. In downtown Mudanjiang, you can stop by the Eight Heroines Square and Jiangbin Park. They are free, and there are many people taking walks in the evening, giving it a lively atmosphere. 🚄 There is a tourist line from Mudanjiang Station to Jingpo Lake, and the journey takes about 1.5 hours. Northeast Chinese cuisine comes in large portions, so two dishes are enough for two people; don't be greedy. 07 Ya'an | Sichuan People from Chengdu head to Western Sichuan during the National Day holiday, and Ya'an is often treated as a place to pass through, but it is actually worth stopping for. Bifengxia is divided into a wildlife park and a scenic area. Take children to the wildlife park, and if you want to see waterfalls and canyons, go to the scenic area. ⏰ Enter the valley at 8:00 AM before the clouds and mist have dispersed. The boardwalk is slippery, but the atmosphere is perfect. ⚠️ The signal in the canyon is weak, so download offline maps in advance. The Panda Base is right next to Bifengxia. You have to be early to see the pandas; they are basically all sleeping after 10:00 AM. Ya'an city is suitable for eating Ya fish and Dada noodles. 📍 The old restaurants along the Qingyi River have consistent flavors. Accommodation during the National Day holiday is much cheaper than in Chengdu, making Ya'an a suitable first stop for Western Sichuan. The "Rain City" lives up to its name, so keep an umbrella with you. 08 Shanghai The Bund and Nanjing Road in Shanghai during the National Day holiday are enough to make you want to turn back, but there are a bunch of uncrowded places hidden in the city. The Guangfulin Relics Park is in Songjiang, and the group of buildings at the underwater museum is very photogenic. ⏰ The light is soft after 3:00 PM, and there are not many people. Yu Garden is crowded during the day, but the lights are still on after 9:00 PM, and most of the people have dispersed, making it comfortable to walk around. ⚠️ Things at the City God Temple snack plaza are expensive and average; walk further into Fangbang Middle Road. The Expo area is now called the Expo Culture Park. It is free and has a large lawn, which is suitable for taking kids out to get some air. Disneyland tickets are expensive and require long queues during the National Day holiday, so skip it if you have a limited budget and go to Binjiang Avenue to see the Lujiazui night view, which is just as stunning. 🚄 The subway can basically cover all the above points, so there is no need to take a taxi. None of these eight places are top-tier destinations that you must visit, but they are just right for avoiding the crowds during the National Day holiday, and the expenses are manageable. If you only pick one, I bet on Zhangye and Bortala; the Northwest in autumn will not let you down. Let us know in the comments where you are planning to go.

Don't want to deal with the National Day crowds? These 8 niche cities are the ultimate autumn hidden gems. 01 Lanzhou | Gansu Heading northwest for National Day, Lanzhou is often treated as a transit stop where people stay one night and leave. I advise you to stay for two days. ⏰ Go to the time-honored Mogouyan Beef Noodles at 7:00 AM. The people in line are mostly locals; tourists don't start pouring in until after 8:00 AM. When ordering, ask for "erxi" (thin noodles), add chili oil separately, and remember the soup is more precious than the noodles. After eating, walk along the Yellow River to the Zhongshan Bridge. Across the bridge is Baita Mountain Park. The steps aren't steep, and you can reach the base of the White Pagoda in 20 minutes for a bird's-eye view of the Yellow River flowing through the city. 📍 You must book the Provincial Museum in advance. It's closed on Mondays, so don't waste a trip. The real "Galloping Horse Treading on a Flying Swallow" is on the second floor. ⚠️ The Zhengning Road Night Market is packed after 6:00 PM. If you want to eat comfortably, go at 5:30 PM. For the milk egg sweet fermented rice, look for the old Ma's stall—don't buy from the first one you see. 🚄 The intercity high-speed train from Zhongchuan Airport to the city takes 40 minutes, saving half the time compared to a taxi. It's suitable for traveling with elderly family members. It's windy by the Yellow River, so bring a jacket. 02 Baise | Guangxi Autumn in Baise is quiet, but Haokun Lake will show you its true colors. ⏰ Arrive at Haokun Lake before 10:00 AM. The water is calm, the reflections are clearest, and the boat ride to the center of the lake feels like gliding into a painting. Tongling Grand Canyon is best visited in the afternoon. It's cool in the canyon, and you'll get soaked standing under the waterfall for 3 minutes, so bring quick-dry clothing. 📍 The Chengbi Lake loop road is great for cycling. You can rent bikes next to the dam parking lot and ride half the loop in 2 hours. 🍜 Try the rolled rice noodles on Wenming Street in the city for breakfast—they're 2 yuan each and come with yellow peel sauce. ⚠️ There are many steps in Tongling Grand Canyon, so don't push yourself if you have bad knees. If you take a sedan chair, negotiate the price beforehand. Baise isn't a popular destination during National Day, and hotel prices are significantly lower than in Nanning, making it perfect for those on a budget who still want to see beautiful scenery. 🚄 A taxi from Baise Station to Haokun Lake takes about 1 hour; carpooling is more cost-effective. 03 Huizhou | Guangdong Huizhou is the backyard garden hidden by Shenzhen residents, so it's not as crazy during National Day. ⏰ People start exercising at Huizhou West Lake at 6:00 AM. There are few tourists on the Su Causeway, and the light hits the Sizhou Pagoda at an angle, so you don't have to fight for a photo spot. Luofu Mountain is worth a full day. After taking the cable car up, you still need to walk 40 minutes to Feiyun Peak. It's windy at the summit, so bring a windbreaker. 📍 The sand at Xunliao Bay is fine, but it gets crowded during National Day. I suggest going in the evening—the sunset is 10 times better than at noon. 🍜 Try the "Ama" stuffed tofu in Qiaodong Market. Locals have been eating it since childhood, and you can eat your fill for 20 yuan per person. ⚠️ Buy tickets for Luofu Mountain and the cable car separately. Online package deals are 20 yuan cheaper, but pay attention to the usage times. It's great for couples and families; you can easily push a stroller around the West Lake, and Xunliao Bay has shallow water areas. 🚄 A taxi from Huizhou North Station to West Lake takes about 25 minutes. 04 Bortala | Xinjiang You might not recognize the name Bortala, but you've definitely seen photos of Sayram Lake. ⏰ It's cold enough to wear a down jacket at Sayram Lake during National Day. Arrive at the lake before 8:00 AM; morning mist clings to the water, and there are more swans than tourists. 📍 Anjihai Grand Canyon is closer if you're coming from Kuitun. There are no railings on the edge of the canyon, so don't stand too far back when taking photos—the wind is strong enough to push you. The mountains and waters of Wenquan County are golden in autumn, perfect for soaking in hot springs after walking along the boardwalk. 🍜 Try the naan-pit meat and milk tea in Bole city—any place you walk into will be good, averaging 40 yuan per person. ⚠️ The speed limit on the Sayram Lake loop road is strict, so don't think about speeding; the interval speed cameras are very accurate. It's great for road trips and photography, but accommodation by the lake is in high demand during National Day, so book a month in advance. 🚄 It's about a 1.5-hour drive from Bole Station to Sayram Lake. 05 Nanping | Fujian Nanping's main attraction is Wuyi Mountain, but don't just focus on Tianyou Peak during National Day. ⏰ Take the first bamboo raft on the Nine-Bend Stream at 7:30 AM. The light is soft, the water is calm, and the boatman will tell stories along the way. In the afternoon, head to the "Rock Bone and Flower Fragrance" roaming path near the Dahongpao mother trees. It's less crowded, the tea fields are layered, and it's an easy walk. 📍 Song Street next to Wuyi Palace is great for an evening stroll. Whether you buy tea or not, drink 3 cups before deciding. 🍜 For Zixi noodles and Langgu smoked goose in the resort area, locals recommend eating on the old street—it's 30% cheaper than in the scenic area. ⚠️ There's a 2-hour wait to climb Tianyou Peak during National Day. If you're with elderly family members, skip it and go to Taoyuan Cave instead. It's perfect for hikers and tea lovers. You must book the Nine-Bend Stream bamboo raft 3 days in advance; there are basically no tickets available on-site. 🚄 A taxi from Wuyi Mountain North Station to the scenic area takes about 20 minutes. 06 Mudanjiang | Heilongjiang Autumn in Mudanjiang is short, but the Diaoshuilou Waterfall at Jingpo Lake is worth the trip. ⏰ Arrive at Jingpo Lake at 10:00 AM. The waterfall's water volume is smaller than in summer, but the water is clearer. A walk around the boardwalk by the pool takes 40 minutes. In the afternoon, head back to the city. The park along the Mudanjiang River is great for a stroll. The river breeze is cool, so wearing a thin down jacket isn't an exaggeration. 📍 The Maogong Mountain viewing platform in the Jingpo Lake scenic area has a great angle for sunset, but there are no streetlights on the way down, so you must leave before 5:00 PM. 🍜 Try the Korean-style cold noodles and rice cakes on Dongyi Pedestrian Street in the city. It's 15 yuan per person, and the cold noodle soup is full of ice chips. ⚠️ The Jingpo Lake cruise has long lines during National Day. If you want to save time, just visit the waterfall and the Underground Forest. It's perfect for people who like quiet autumn scenery. If you come the week after National Day, hotel prices are cut in half. 🚄 It's about a 1.5-hour drive from Mudanjiang Station to Jingpo Lake. 07 Yushu | Qinghai Yushu is for those who aren't afraid of a long journey. ⏰ You can't just enter Hoh Xil, but if you drive along the Qinghai-Tibet Highway to the Kunlun Mountain Pass, you can see Tibetan antelopes running in the distance. The morning light is good, so bring a telephoto lens. Parts of the Sanjiangyuan National Park are open, but you need to report in advance—don't just wander in. 📍 In the evening at Gesar King Square in Jiegu Town, locals dance the Guozhuang. Just stand to the side and watch; don't hold your phone up to their faces to film. 🍜 Try the yak yogurt and tsampa in Yushu city. You might not be used to the first bite, but it's delicious after adding sugar. ⚠️ The altitude is 3,700 meters. Don't shower or run around on the first day. If you have a headache, use oxygen—don't try to tough it out. It's suitable for road trippers with high-altitude experience. Accommodation options are limited during National Day, so book in advance. 🚄 Renting a car after landing at Yushu Batang Airport is the most convenient option. 08 Zhongwei | Ningxia Zhongwei is where the desert meets the Yellow River. During National Day, it's half as crowded as Shapotou is during peak season. ⏰ Get to Shapotou as soon as it opens at 8:00 AM. You won't have to wait in line for sand sliding or sheepskin rafts. Leave after 10:00 AM when the tour groups arrive. 📍 Gaomiao Temple is in the city. After 4:00 PM, the light shines through the halls, and you can see the details of the brick carvings clearly. It's free, but don't wear shorts inside. 🍜 Try the haozi noodles and stir-fried latiao around the Drum Tower. Locals eat this for lunch, and it's 20 yuan per person. ⚠️ Don't buy the full package for Shapotou activities. Just choose one between sand sliding and the Yellow River zipline. Riding a camel for 15 minutes is enough. It's great for families; there's an elevator to the dunes in the desert area, so you don't have to climb. 🚄 A taxi from Zhongwei South Station to Shapotou takes about 30 minutes. These 8 places are perfect for National Day. Which one do you want to visit first?
