See the dragon in Cave 11 of the Yungang Grottoes.

The Yungang Grottoes Caves 9-13 are commonly known as the "Five Huadong Caves" and are exceptionally beautiful due to the later application of mud and color painting. As they were built during the Northern Wei Dynasty's national reform and cultural renewal, the Han style became stronger and they have distinct Chinese and ethnic characteristics. Cave 11 has a central pillar in the middle of the cave, a typical pagoda temple cave. The pillar is divided into three layers. The first layer has a standing Buddha carved on each of the four walls, known as the "Four Square Four Buddhas". The upper layer of the pillar also has niches with statues on all four sides. The four corners of the pagoda are carved with mountain flowers and banana leaves, and the middle is carved with an Asura statue. There are two dragons carved around the top, known as the "Dragon Department of the Eight Heavenly Dragons". The carving is vivid and is a masterpiece of the dragon carving in the Yungang Grottoes. 👍 On the north side of the middle layer of the west wall of the cave, under a Chinese tile roof niche that is 7.4 meters wide and 2.4 meters high, 7 standing Buddhas are carved. Each one is wearing a robe and a wide belt, and they are all full of energy. They are not only a prominent expression of the seven Buddhas theme in the grotto temple, but also a representative work of the Sinicization of Buddhist statue art. It is said that Cave 11 is the cave with the most statue inscriptions in the main caves of the Yungang Grottoes. The upper part of the east wall of the cave preserves the earliest and most inscriptions in the Yungang Grottoes, the "Taihe Seven Years Statue Inscription", with a total of 336 characters. This inscription describes the motives, wishes, historical background, and real environment of the people who built the stone statues that year, such as the city master Fazong and Puming, and has high historical value. 👍
